Death Battle Retrospective: Finale

 

I would definitely say I have a lot of complex feelings having written out my experience with Death Battles fandom over the years. Ngl there's a lot of “bad” things that have happened. From seeing others get bullied or harassed over silly vs opinions, the general meltdowns over outcomes, or being exposed to the personalities of some pretty awful people, etc. In general there’s also just a fair amount of fans that just seemed to care more about the “show” than the well being of the people making it.

Still I’m still fairly happy that I got involved with the fandom when I did. I would say that I didn’t have many friends IRL back at that time, so having people to talk to about general interests, even virtually, was nice. There's still a lot of the people I met back on Screwattack 10 years ago that I still speak to regularly, which is more than I can say for 99% of anyone I knew from high school. 

And I do still enjoy analyzing characters and seeing them come to life in animations, even if I think the community takes it too seriously at times. I look back at Miles vs Static and realize, WOW I did something that was seen by millions of people. How many people can claim that? It does suck when people freak out over an episode, but it’s also a great feeling when they enjoy it too. Honestly I just look at Goku vs Superman 3 and think that one episode makes everything else worth it.

If I went back in time I’m pretty sure I would make the same choices to join the ODBFB a second time. Though…….I would probably try to warn people about Bowser vs Ganon or Ben vs Hal. As well as avoid adding certain people to our original discord server. #HeroesShadeWasRight

 

Anyway I know things are pretty crazy right now with Rooster Teeth shutting down. I myself did not know about the shut down until the morning it was announced. In fact I only found out marginally before the public twitter posts. Manny others where seemingly not as fortunate. Luckily my own finances were never dependent on the company, but I feel bad for anyone else's who was.

I would still say to stay positive atm. I know there’s a lot of dooming, but I think it's important right now to not jump the gun. Particularly given that a lot of people behind the show obviously still want to continue it and probably see those comments.

Death Battle Retrospective: Ep 186 Goku vs Superman

 

The pitch

The idea of doing another rematch for Goku vs Superman actually existed for a couple of years. I believe it was first conceptualized in 2020 or 2021? Lousy and Swan both initially looked into Superman. I also had information on Goku. In this initial idea it was originally just going to be “Super” Goku vs the Modern Superman (Post-crises, N52 and Rebirth). 

I started ruminating on the idea for a while and decided that I wanted to look into Superman myself. Obviously Lousy/Swan had looked into him a decent amount, but a lot of what they gathered was still relatively “common knowledge”. I felt like trying to read through Superman’s history on my side would also help give me perspective when pitting him against Goku. 

As the years went on I occasionally would work on Superman notes off and on, but when we were told we were going to do it for season 10 I kinda had an idea.

Essentially the idea would be to composite every version of Goku and Superman into one. This would not only make the fight “definitive” but it would allow us to focus on more unique material than the first two fights. In my mind we already did GT Goku vs Post-Crises Superman and “Super” Goku vs N52 Superman, so why do Super vs Modern Superman a second time.

I would say the actual decision to do this wasn’t that hard to fight for. I kinda just said “I think this would be a cool idea” and Ben sorta went “yeah that sounds cool”. I don’t even remember If I showed him the doc pitching it.

The research

Back when the original idea for the idea was suggested I gathered notes on the DCAU extended universe cartoons and read all the DCAU comics. I played the Injustice games and read those sides in comics. I also watched and read Red Son, the Reeves movies, and the Fliercher cartoons. At the time I just wanted to make blogs of a few misc Superman incarnations.

As time went on I decided to try to read through most of Superman's Post-crisis comic history. I figured if I paced myself I could probably do it. I think I read a few hundred Post-Crisis comics initially. 

When it became clear that Goku vs Superman was gonna come back, I decided to go for broke. I was gonna consume all Superman Media from start to finish, even the stuff we wouldn’t use in the episode. I believe it was winter of 2022 that I was fairly set on this.

One big issue I realized was that all the “flowcharts” on characters don’t really work, cause they skip over material. I decided to go to the DC wiki and look at the list of comics for each variation of Superman. I then went through each in alphabetical order.

There were some days where I had more time, but I essentially calculated the amount of comics I would need to go through daily to finish before the research meeting would happen. I also essentially looked at lists of Superman’s cartoon appearances, movies, tv shows, etc. I would often watch some of these at 2-3x speed while also taking notes. It was pretty daunting, but eventually over months and months I whittled it down. I actually didn’t finish until November though. Funny enough Infinite frontier had happened by the time I was done, which canonically merged all Superman’s, making a composite much easier to justify for him.

Goku was significantly easier to research. When the original idea was brought up I had already gone through the trouble of taking notes on his main incarnation, along with GT, Super, Heroes, etc. Likewise I had owned all 42 volumes of the manga since I was a kid, and watched the anime as it was originally released. Since I also had one set of notes for all collective DB characters, I naturally just filled out all the info for Goku by the time this ep was finalized for production. I mostly just had to go back and add in notes on random games, cards, plays, etc.

Overall it was probably at least 8000 comics, 60 volumes of manga, 100s of episodes of anime and dozens and dozens and dozens of hours of various movies, tv shows, etc. I even bought a copy of the original Superman Novel.

Community involvement

I made it a point to lurk on a lot of people in various discords to see their opinions on both characters. I also obviously checked other places to see if they had missed powers or feats, such as vs wiki, reddit respect threads, etc. Again I would say Superman was harder in this respect than Goku.

The debate

I won’t lie before I nixed Q and As I was planning on making a pretty extensive one for this episode. Essentially for the most part it really just came down to proving that Superman could counter Goku and was stronger than him. Many of these counters were found through observation, or via leads I found in various discord posts or threads. Since I wanted this fight to be “definitive” I decided that I wanted to make both of their stats as high as possible to avoid any room for doubt.

Firstly I decided to bump up the universe size for both characters. I figured that even at a baseline that if Superman could destroy more universes than Goku, that would serve as an understandable baseline for the casual audience. For Dragon Ball the universe model was resized using Heaven as the focus point, while the size of the DC universe based on its rate of expansion. Ironically for DC the hardest part of this calc was finding the exact age of the universe, which was only stated to be 15 billion once in Zero Hour. Once I had the numbers for both where found, it was pretty easy to compare. We also upscaled Goku with broad strokes to avoid igniting a fight.

Next was the high end stuff. We had already used low complex multi arguments for Heroes via the crack of time. On Superman’s side the question was “what feat will normal people buy”. Ultimately I felt like the World Forger Punch was the best, as he was obviously the strongest being Superman had defeated with a fairly blatant punch. Mxy was also a good supporting evidence because he was weaker than World Forger, and pretty much had feats of destroying DCs entire omniverse. This was largely explained in a black box since I knew normal people wouldn’t understand it well.

Speed wasn’t that complicated either. Since Superman’s universe could just be made larger than Dragon Ball’s, his finite speed feats were going to be larger than Goku’s no matter what.

In terms of incalculable speeds Superman could obviously scale to the Flash, and his silver age counterpart also had this feat of breaking the bonds of infinity. Goku is a little bit different. For those who may remember Trunks didn’t have high end speed pulled on the trigger during his ep. Though I was aware of it at the time.

For a pretty long time Dragon Ball, even Heroes, having immeasurable speed was considered a huge debate. When the community server had prior matchups involving the series or when other discord servers talked about it they were not convinced. I remember vs wiki didn’t even have it on their profiles until a month before Trunks’ episode aired. 

Because of that I didn’t feel the need to push it as strongly back at that time(Though I tried to get a black box added addressing it). For this fight I knew we had to use it, but I actually felt like the Black hole feat in Heroes was too esoteric to explain quickly or easily. It also didn’t involve Goku directly, so you’d have to spend time scaling him.

Instead I decided to be a bit more radical and just use Goku blocking infinite Zamasu as a feat. I figure that since Zamasu was temporally omnipresent that would be much more understandable to normal people.

The fight Script

Lousy, Swan and I helped Ben brainstorm a lot of ideas for the fight. I remember Swan came up with the idea for the “world of cardboard” line. I also came up with the idea of having Superman’s bioelectric aura become visible similar to the new Superman Cartoon. I also came up with the idea of the multiverse shattering showing alternate versions of the fight and the fight ending in the crack of time. I then wrote up a document of various combinations of character incarnations that they wrote into the script.

The host script

Ben was the primary writer for this fight, but I helped out a lot in terms of organizing the information and giving feedback. One of the first things I did was a long list of what feats, plot points, character traits, arguments, etc should be brought up in the script. Essentially a kinda pseudo outline. There was actually a slight debate on including Heroes stuff, but I more or less said giving Superman everything and leaving that out would be a bad idea. Ultimately the script still uses Heroes and GT, but leans a bit more into Super.

Anyway every draft I would write up a long series of notes. I believe we did this around 4-5 times. We actually cut it really close cause I remember we were trying to squeeze in meetings late each week and I don’t think the final version was done until sometime in November.

The episode was also a lot longer than I think most people anticipated. I think the goal was originally 18 pages, and that went up to like 25 or something. This was the longest episode since Megaman Royale.

The Details

I also wrote up all of the “slates” and “black boxes” in this episode. My attempt was to cram in as much info into the episode as possible while not repeating any information that was spoken verbally. If you look carefully, I would say that every major feat both characters have done was accounted for somewhere. Overall boxes and slates are much more numerous and meaty than average.

For the black boxes particularly I kinda ended up cramming in a lot of misc counters to Heroes stuff. Unfortunately the episode was already like twice as long as a normal ep, so you couldn’t really go over that in a feasible way. For each black box I also wrote up a lengthy description detailing what they should be implemented for. We didn’t keep “all” of those boxes, but I think we had enough that everyone felt the episode acknowledged every possible argument.

The slates also have a lot of specific references I put in. Both characters have their names written in their native tongue cause I searched that out specifically. Their favorite foods and occupations were also something I specifically sought out. I also had the idea for the “not a bad dad” thing for Goku.

My favorite was listing on the L.L. love interests of Superman. I actually outright wrote down each of these love interests as I came across them in the comics. Several are super obscure.

The editing

The episode was edited by DJTiki and Max. They both did a fantastic job and did some of the best editing of their career imo. I had a job of gathering “most” of the footage they used. I was also around fairly often to give DJ pointers or extra material if he needed while editing. Funny enough, I think the researchers tended to be more willing to bend over backwards to get DJ extra editing material relative to editors that came before him. Kinda makes us hypocrites.

One of my favorite panels was this scene from Superman Smashes the Klan.

The Math

I did the math for both characters. Every calculation the episode used was by me and made by scratch. Ironically I would say that “most” of them weren't that hard. You can actually see them listed on my blogspot. 

Learning from the past

I think a big thing with this episode was avoiding some of the pitfalls of the second Goku vs Superman. Both characters are far more friendly this time, the battle is framed as a spar and so on. Both characters I would say also get a lot more respect in the rundown. In particular I’m glad Superman’s rundown plays him being a good guy completely straight.

The final product

I think this episode came out as perfectly as it possibly could. I think every argument or feat that you could possibly care about was in the episode in some form. 

The animation was beautiful. The shard crack scenes, the ultra instinct fight, the galaxy wide sun dip and the final blow were all amazing. The final shot with the fist bump was lovely. The voice actors killed it! They even got cameos from the original episode's voice actors(another suggestion I made). Brandon also made a magnificent song for this ep, which was called “Super” (yes another suggestion I made lol)

Obviously I put A LOT of myself into this episode, and I would wager it wouldn’t have been possible without me. But I would also say that about pretty much everyone who worked on it. I see this episode as a culmination of all the talent, lessons learned, skills, teamwork and passion built up by everyone at Death Battle over a 10 year timespan. I don’t think it would have been possible at any other point in the show's history and it’s probably the episode I’m most proud of. I even got a special recognition in the episode in the credits for it.

Death Battle Retrospective: 172-185,187

 I think that season 10 was objectively the best season of the show. It had some of the strongest animations, the strongest episode choices and the strongest research. I would say that it was pretty much a culmination of everything the show had built up to that point. 

That said, I would also say ironically that it was probably the most rocky. It felt like we were cutting things a lot closer in general compared to previous years. I also believe we started the season much later and that we had no mid season break either. The previous two editors also both left at once before the season even started. Luckily this gave DJ a chance to interview and get an editing position himself. Later on he also had a friend named Galaxy Max join him. They made a good team.

This was also the first time they attempted to have a “ballot” where discord users could vote for fights that the show could do.

This would again be repeated in season 11 with the “tournament of Champions”

DJ also made this whole “hint cipher” that people could analyze to attempt to figure out the episodes chosen that season.

Anyway I wouldn’t say too much changed, though we got a new research member, Swalot aka Juekum. He was another old time Srewattack member. I also talked to Jetz a bit more than previous years and he seemed cool.

I didn’t have much investment in this fight, but I enjoyed the animation. I remember Luis posting a meme about this fight with the Thanos butt thing from Endgame. The character writing was also pretty good imo.

This was one of my favorite fights of the season as a fan who played all the Souls games up until that point. I did the character research for DragonBorn and Swan for Chosen Undead.I would say that the most difficult part of the research was just understanding Skyrim's bizarre cosmology. Cataloging all the spells and relevant abilities for both sides was time consuming, but relatively rudimentary. Figuring out how to frame the Chosen Undeads defeat was also a challenge in terms of writing, as he was basically unkillable in a traditional sense.

Anyway I love the setup of the fight being near the first flame. The back and forth of spells, and particularly the vow of silence segment. The ending where the DragonBorn snuffs out the first flame with a shout was also cool. Apparently Swan voiced the “prepare to die” line, which was pretty raw. I remember we attempted to get Solair into earlier versions of the fight, but it wasn’t feasible due to time constraints. Maybe one day he can have his own fight.

Never seen either series, but I recall this being a fun episode. I think my most distinct memory is that sky shot with Killua in the air while performing a lighting attack. Supposedly they almost made a mistak with the design of the button Mikasa uses and that had to be corrected.

Another fun fight. One of the funnier things I learned about Stitch was all the weird spin offs he has where he’s basically a Dragon Ball character. The animation had a pretty decent  and had a large amount of humor I enjoyed. I remember Stitch’s lines are actually in his language for that matter.

I remember the 3rd Galaxy movie complicated the whole “he’s not a racoon” discourse, since in that movie he actually was established to have been an Earth racoon, muddying public perception of the character.

This was the first episode written by Grand Blazer. I’m fairly certain he took the writing slot intended for me, after I decided I’d rather focus on Goku vs Superman.

Anyway I think he did a pretty good job. Both characters' interactions, particularly the ending where Obito gave Vader some peace, were written pretty well. Vader was also made fairly menacing during the fight. I recall some contesting of the result, but I recall the community going back and forth a bit over the years, so I don’t think it matters much.

This fight is slept on ngl. I remember being pretty floored by the scale that it went up to, all the form changes and the fire/darkness effects for each character's respective attacks. The ending where Raven blew out the fire was also pretty rad. In general I’m kinda just glad Raven got better representation than in her original match.

This fight did result in A LOT of people getting angry over the outcome though. My guess is that part of it was just breaking the audience's suspension of disbelief due to the notoriety of Jean’s reputation in Marvel’s cosmology compared to Raven in DC’s. I recall us having a huge issue with people trying to screencap the researchers after the ep came out, with people taking their words out of context and spreading it in public to try to ridicule them. Accusations of rigging the fight were also common. Not invested in the outcome myself, but it was a bit much if you ask me.

Apparently there were also people in Seth the Programmer fandom demanding to know who the researchers of this episode were. Not the first time something outlandish had happened with that guy, as Seth once tried to manipulate a member of the G1 blog into saying some crazy things on a video stream.

Speaking of Seth this was the year he was outed by the community for….all sorts of things. Tbh I had seen this document outsing him for various things years earlier, so I was confused about why it took so long for people to hold him accountable. It was obvious from the start.

I remember in particular he went onto some stream to try to defend himself, but ended up having the equivalent of an Ace Attorney villain breakdown. It was wild to watch. *eats popcorn.

Episode 178:  Guts vs Dimitri

A good fight and great return for Guts. I didn’t dislike Gut’s original fight, but it  was basically just “Guts is cool” in the recap. This one had much better research and the fight itself did a great job of leaning into the gruff nature of both characters' series. I loved how Dimitri decided to protect Guts in the end for that matter.

Speaking of breaking the audience's suspension of disbelief from the prior episode post, I would def say this episode illustrates how that can happen with the causal audience of a given franchise. The Fire Emblem fanbase largely did not have faith in Dimitri winning this fight, and a lot of them didn’t buy the calcs used for him. It really shows that how a character is presented on screen can matter a lot to the people watching Death Battle. As well as the fact that power scaling logic sometimes goes at right angles to the narrative(Batman dolls out FTL nuke punches).

Episode 179: Martian Manhunter vs Silver Surfer

This was a difficult fight to research. Manhunter just had so much material, that other researchers had to jump in to help out Grand. I myself actually read through all his N52 and rebirth appearences.

Anyway I would say the fight turned out well. The dialogue is its strongest point, particularly the ending exchange. The set up with the detective agency was also pretty cool. I think some middle portions of the fight are a little slow.

Episode 180: Bill vs Discord

This is objectively one of the best episodes the show has ever made. DJ went hard with the editing, it has the most tabs since Naruto/Ichigo, Billy was crazy with all the animation changes, the characterization was great and so was the music. Bill winning was also framed in pretty much the perfect way, with him more or less being screwed over by Discord regardless.

But on an entirely “personal” level, I just can’t jive with the episode myself. There was a lot of toxicity around this match for years and most debates had this habit of spiraling out of control basically everywhere. To this day it’s the only episode thread in the Official Discord to have been locked for a significant period of time and to be the only match the G1 blog opted out of predicting. A lot of previous incidents with the MLP fandom, particularly the Speed impersonation attempt, also made me uneasy with doing the episode. I realize the casual audience wouldn’t know about that stuff, but I’m frankly still surprised that there’s people in the community aware of those incidents and still pushed the episode so hard anyway. Doesn’t seem like a great set of priorities. 

But in the end it worked out.

Episode 181: Cole vs Alex

This was the other Ballot champions episode. 

Cole vs Alex has been pushed for a LONG time. I remember it being super big back in the 2010s when both series were still recent. But over time both series kinda lost relevancy and the ep became the fandom's white whale. In the end an organized campaign from multiple people was the main reason it won the poll.

Anyway I think the episode's winner had largely been solved for several years at that point. Pretty much everyone knew that Cole should win. 

The fight itself was pretty good, and I remember being surprised about how much mileage they got out of Cole's powers. I’m happy they also used the good Cole, as it kinda gave the fight a sense of stakes, and a cathartic conclusion. The “this world isn’t perfect line” is also one of my personal favorites.

Episode 182: Freeza vs Megatron

Fun fact this was originally the G1 communities most wanted fight. They made a blog for it back in 2018-ish. I was even a guest on that blog. Since then they flip flopped a bit on what exact incarnations of Megatron they wanted to use though, with many citing Unicron Trilogy Megatron after Nem pushed the idea.

Anyway this was another great fight. It was much longer than average, had an amazing soundtrack and moments like Freeza Pulling Cybertron with TK were awesome. I would also say that Megatron “won” despite technically dying. He also got some of the best lines too.

I would say leading up to this fight I decided to be unclear of what exactly Megatron was going to get composite wise. I realized that developments in the Japanese continuity were likely going to be a huge point of contention in arguments about Megatron strength, and I didn’t want to risk tainting the conversation. In the end we didn’t use the Japanese continuity for a various number of reasons, though I think we’d be more open to it in the future. I find the causal and vs fandom divide on this episode really interesting btw, cause opinions on the “closeness” of this fight was split in a similar way to opinions on Dimitri with Fire Emblem fans.

Man it’s crazy to remember Street Fighter lost for 6 years straight 

I’ll definitely say I noticed some “weirdness” leading up to the fight. Dragon Ball had lost a few battles in a row and it seemed as if some people were getting it in their head that the show was out to get them. I think some people even unironically believed I hated the fanbase.  I remember on a few occasions beforehand having people implicate I was making the series lose cause I loved comics or Sonic or was holding the rest of the team hostage or something(despite me killing multiple Sonic or Comic characters at that point). In the lead up to the fight people were also preemptively going through my prior blogs to ridicule me on discord and vs wiki. Even some arguments people pushed at the time seemed very “specific” and I remember seeing a person in public I didn’t know speak as if they knew about my discord conversations from a secondary source. Ultimately I just stopped talking about the series much publicly after that and nixed anymore Q and A blogs (something multiple researcher members had proposed due to the community being pushy about them and feeling they were attracting negative attention).

On a separate note this is the first ep where I updated the DragonBall universe's size. Though it wouldn’t make its appearance until Goku vs Superman.

The real death battle is between Gojo and Makima’s goon squads tbh.

Anyway I recall the debate internally on this one being pretty intense with a lot of the fight coming down to how Makima’s powers work. I also recall the ongoing nature of both series causing some nervousness. If something new came out we might get screwed over.

Anyway I think the final battle was pretty great. It had a lot of trippy visuals, Gojo was cool and Makima died like she deserves.  Supposedly some people didn’t like Makima’s characterization, but I don’t think I get that.

Probably the best episode made by Luis himself. It’s amazing how he could draw this entire animation. The fight was pretty creative with things like the god bone and the giant Scooby transformation. The set up with the chase and Eustace being the one killed in the end was also pretty fun. I’m glad it ended in a draw.

The controversy and firing of Roiland happened mid production of this ep and it totally lowered my hype a bit. The next season of Rick came out shortly before the ep did though, and it was decent enough that I “kinda” got that back.

Anyway I love the set up, and Swan’s writing was on point. Interestingly he managed to keep the Doctor fairly pacifistic despite it being a battle to the death.

Research wise this ep wasn’t hard, outside of the fact it was just so much history to go over on the Doctor's side. It was also a good thing he had the De-mat gun, since that served as an easy work around Rick’s defenses.

The finale of Season 10. This fight had been requested for' for a long time, but had only been able to be realized now. It was fun to work on. Personally, after reading so much Transformers stuff I’m amazed by how concise, and well thought out the official continuity is.

I liked the fight, though I’ll admit it's not my favorite finale. It’s mostly high scale cosmic destruction and robo punches. The special effects were really good though and almost movie quality.  I also loved the part where they chucked galaxies.

Ah yeah. Chuck those galaxies like an ancient sith lord!
