Character Analysis: Freeza

Background


The second major big bad of Dragon Ball Z. Freeza is a space tyrant who rules over entire planets and major parts of a galaxy. He primarily sells planets to high bidders and has tons of subordinates whose main job is to exterminate the local inhabitants of said planets. One of his main enforcers was the Saiyains, a warrior race from the planet Vegeta. However,   Freeza decided to kill off the Saiyans and their planet out of fear of a fabled Super Saiyan that might one day destroy. Unknown to Freeza, the series protagonist Goku survived the genocide.

Many years later when Goku and a few other surviving Saiyains had become adults, Freeza traveled to the planet Namek in search of magical wish granting orbs called the dragon balls. Freeza desired to use the dragon balls to become immortal, but seemingly died at the hands of Goku before he could make the wish. Goku having become the Super Saiyan he feared due to Freeza killing his best friend Krillen.

Freeza was later revealed to have survived his fight with Goku. But ironically was killed a second time by the time traveling warrior future Trunks.

In Dragon Ball Super, Freeza's role was greatly expanded. He spent his time in hell being tortured by fuzzy cute creatures and was eventually resurrected by his minions with the Earth's dragon balls. After training for 4 months he challenged Goku again, but ultimately lost again due to poor power control for his newest form.

Freeza was later recruited for the multiverse wide martial arts tournament of power, ironically aiding Goku greatly in winning the tournament. He was still technically dead while participating(being brought to the living realm via a character named Baba), but was restored to life by Whis again at the end of the series.

Freeza’s most recent appearance was in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, where he ultimately sets the plot in motion by discovering another lost Saiyan named Broly and bringing him to earth. He also shows up towards the end of the Granola saga.


Abilities

Ki

A form of metaphysical life energy that exists within all living things. Humanoids and other sapient creatures can harness it to increase their physical strength and durability. As well as channel it for various energy attacks. A large enough outburst of ki can affect the environment, manipulating clouds and causing earthquakes.

It’s mentioned Ki control is needed to increase physical power


Ki sense

The ability to sense the Ki of others. Freeza originally did not have this ability, but he’s noted the power of characters like Jiren in recent confrontations, implying he learned the ability between his original appearances in Dragon Ball Z and Super.

Ki transfer

The ability to transfer Ki to another living thing to heal or empower them. Freeza does this in the tournament of power to Goku.


Ki blast

The ability to shoot bolts of Ki as a projectile attack. This is often a standard attack in Dragon Ball.

Flight

The ability to utilize Ki to propel oneself in the air for flight.


Death beam

Freeza’s signature attack. It’s a powerful finger sized condensed Ki beam, capable of piercing through powerful opponents. Freeza often uses it to instantly kill opponents.

The Death Beam has several variants including


Death Bullet

A rapid firing variation of the death beam.

  • DBZ ep 92 14:11 Freeza hits Goku with multiple finger beams

  • DBZ ep 96 19:15 Freeza uses multiple finger beams, which Goku dodges 


Golden Death Beam

A more powerful variation of the death beam using in Freeza’s golden form.

Grand death beam

A multi-fire version of the death beam that homes in on opponents.

  • DBS ep 95 5:24 Freeza shows the ability to curve his finger beam, killing a ton of assassins


Cage of light

A multitude of death beams fired around an opponent like a cage. Trapping them and limiting movement.

  • DBS 124 17:23 Freeza creates a cage of death beams around Dypso and Gohan, in order to limit Dypso’s speed and movement


Eye laser

An energy based attack from the eyes.

  • DBZ ep 54 14:48 Freeza kills a henchmen with laser eyes 

  • DBZ ep 87 17:00 Freeza uses laser eyes 


Death ball

A sphere like a Ki energy ball. It’s typically about medium sized.


The death ball has several variations


Destroy the planet

A Ki ball similar to the death ball, but larger. 

  • DBZ ep 97 12:27 Freeza creates a Ki ball and attempts to blow up Namek with it

    • DBZ ep 97 19:18 The effects of Freeza’s ki ball are visible from space and detonate the planet. He then says they have 5 minutes till the planet blows up 


Supernova

A large red variant of the death ball. This attack was used against future Trunks and destroyed planet Vegeta.

  • DBS ep 19 5:11 Freeza blows up planet vegeta in Super


Golden death ball

A more powerful variant of the Death Ball used by Freeza in his golden form.

  • DBS ep 125 19:34 Freeza creates a death ball attack and throws it at Toppo 


Death Wave

A wave like Ki beam that slices through solid objects.

  • DBZ ep 91 8:48 Freeza creates a finger beam like slash attack that slices through a mountain and an ocean


Death Cannon

A more powerful energy Ki beam. It was used by Freeza against Goku on Namek.

  • DBZ ep 105 20:37 Freeza retaliates against Goku with a one handed energy wave.


Telekinesis

The ability to move matter using Ki. Freeza has used this ability to move water, throw large rocks and erect stone barriers.


Imprisonment ball

An attack where Freeza will trap an opponent in a TK energy ball. Allowing him to bash them around the battlefield like a baseball.

  • DBZ ep 88 17:38 Freeza paralyzes Goku in some kind of energy ball and then kicks him around. The ball explodes if it touches a solid object

  • DBS ep 126 7:37 Freeza traps Toppo in a sphere of energy to paralyze him


Death psycho bomb

An attack where Freeza will telekinetically move an opponent before exploding them from the inside out.

  • DBZ ep 95 18:49 Freeza holds Krillin telekinetically and lifts him into the air before exploding him #Background

  • Revival F 15:45 Freeza lifts a soldier with TK and explodes them


Nova strike

An attack where Freeza will surround himself with a Ki aura and ram into opponents as a physical rush strike.

  • DBZ ep 100 3:24 Freeza charges Goku while surrounded in a ki aura 


Death saucer

A variation of the destructo disk used by Krillen. Freeza creates a disk-like construct of Ki that can slice through opponents or objects much stronger than himself. Freeza can control the trajectory of the disks once thrown.

  • DBZ ep 104 7:09 Freeza creates 2 death disks


Tail attack

Most of Freeza’s forms have a prehensile tail that can be used to attack, bind or strangle opponents.

  • DBZ ep 89 11:11 Freeza uses his tail to hit Goku

Survivability

Freeza is well regarded for his survivability. Particularly he can survive in the vacuum of space and survive with large chunks of his body missing. In one case after being revived by the dragon balls Freeza’s body survived in a state where it was cut to pieces for at least several minutes before being put in a restoration pod.


Surviving in space

  • DBZ ep 97 20:10 Freeza says he can survive in space

  • Revival F 1:25:34 it's said Freeza survived earth’s destruction and is still alive because he can survive in space


Surviving with lost body parts

  • DBS ep 104 21:08 Freeza can live without his lower torso and arm

  • DBZ ep 119 16:44 Freeza actually survived the explosion of Namek with only his upper torso and half of his head intact

  • Revival F 9:20 Freeza is brought back to life in chunks and pieces. His segments stays alive in this form

  • Revival F 12:11 Freeza’s segments are placed together in a healing pod. He’s eventually able to heal with the aid of the healing pod 

  • DBS ep 19 14:07,16:30 Freeza is wished back to life in the form of pieces


Resistance to existence erasure 

Freeza can endure destruction energy, which has the ability to erase things from existence.

  • DBS ep 95 8:38 Freeza endures being hit by energy of destruction

  • DBS ep 125 14:11 Freeza tries to stop energy of destruction from Toppo but has difficulty surviving it


Misc

  • DBZ ep 97 8:45 Freeza creates a giant black energy barrier

  • Revival F 1:14:12 Freeza fires 5 energy balls at once and they each home in on Goku


Transformations

Freeza’s race has the ability to suppress or enhance their power through various physical transformations. Most forms do not have any notable attributes outside of a massive power increases.


1st form

1st form acted as Freeza’s default form during his time when the Saiyains worked for him and his first appearance on Namek.

2nd form

Freeza’s tallest and most imposing form. It adds an addition of horns on the top of his head.

3rd form

A form that takes on an alien inspiration.. 

  • DBZ ep 82 14:13 Freeza transforms into his 3rd form


Final form/Final form full power

A sleeker form used by Freeza to fight Super Saiyan Goku on Namek. Freeza can add further muscle mass to this form by raising his battle power to “100%”. During Freeza’s original fight with Goku on Namek he had trouble maintaining this form at full power for elongated lengths of time.

Golden Freeza

Gold Freeza is a new form that could fight evenly with SSJ Blue Goku. Initially Freeza had a hard time maintaining its power usage, but has mastered it before the tournament of power.


Power usage issues

  • Revival F 1:11:45 Freeza’s golden form uses too much energy and reduces his stamina. He never got used to it due to coming to earth immediately after getting it

  • Revival F 1:23:47 Freeza loses his golden form due to lack of power. He then blows up the earth

  • DBS ep 26 17:33 Goku states Freeza’s golden form burns through to much energy for him to maintain

Black Freeza

A new form Freeza got after training for 10 years in a hyperbolic time chamber. Freeza used it to bitch slap Goku and Vegeta, and nothing else yet.

    Hey frieza cucks. Are you happy with the results? Are you gonna srop giving death threats to death battle and say they are biased against dragon ball.

    Hey Ultra, quick question: Any particular reason Megatron wasn't scaled to infinite speed Unicron? I can understand Mindframes and Lightspeed perception feats being disregarded because they're perception feats and not reaction feats, but Omega Prime and Sentinel Maximus could keep up with a Unicron that even in a reduced body was stated to have infinite speed:

    I was just curious if there was a reason the DB team didn't think Megatron would scale to this beside it being “inconsistent” like if Omega Prime or Sentinel Maximus keeping up with this particular version of Unicron took place in a different continuity that the version of Megatron you were using wasn't a part of or something along those lines?
