Character Analysis: Rick Sanchez

Backstory


A scientist inhabiting one of the infinite universes across the infinite multiverse. Rick C-137 acts as the primary protagonist of the show Rick & Morty, and began his life as a family man to his wife Diane and his daughter Beth. During his youth he was approached by an alternate version of himself, named Rick Prime, who promised him interdimensional portal technology in exchange for an alliance. When Rick refused, Prime killed his family, leading Rick to invent portal technology himself and go on a decades long revenge quest. Unfortunately Rick was never able to track Prime down, and became nihilistic as a result. Destroying many other versions of himself across the multiverse during his rampage.

Eventually the other versions of Rick begged Rick C-137 for a truce, which resulted in them briefly teaming up. Rick built them a giant spaceship called the citadel of Ricks and then helped them create the “central finite curve”. The central finite curve being a “wall around infinite” that isolates the universes where Rick is the smartest man in the universe from the universes where he isn’t. Essentially creating an area in the multiverse where versions of Rick are always on the top of the food chain.

Rick is a gifted hacker and is able to break his way into controlling various machines or simulations.

The respawn button allows the user to “save their place” in a timeline, and then seemingly revive back in that location in the timeline upon either death or another press of the button. It’s later explained that the button actually shunts the user to an equally valid potential timeline where they take the place of one of their alternate selves.
