Character Analysis: Scott Pilgrim

I made this blog as part of my patreon. My next patreon blog will be Fleetway Sonic vs Kasen. Please support me if you’d like to vote on what I’ll do next.

Background

Scott Pilgrim is kind of a loser. He lives in Canada and mooches off his roommate Wallace. At the beginning of his story he’s dating a highschooler named Knives (because wanted an easy relationship after a terrible breakup with a prior girlfriend) and doesn’t have a job.

The majority of his series centers around a potential new romantic relationship with a girl named Ramona. Scott actually cheats on Knives with Ramona, before breaking up with her formally.

Scott also has to fight all of Ramona’s “evil exes” before he can fully form a relationship with her. These exes include 7 individuals whom Ramona dated and dumped throughout her life.

It’s also revealed that Scott has himself wronged several women and has been repressing his memories of his past mistakes to avoid confronting them. Scott eventually reconciles this aspect of himself by fighting the personification of his evil self, Nega Scott.

At the end of his story Scott defeats all of Ramona’s evil exes, undergoes more character development and they seemingly have a happy ever after.

That said, in the recent anime reboot of the series the story continues, sorta. In the anime Scott is seemingly killed during his fight against the first evil ex Matther Patel.

It’s later revealed that Scott was brought into the future by an older version of himself. This older version of Scott aimed to use time travel to prevent his younger self from ever getting together with Ramona. Supposedly, Older Scott’s relationship with Ramona failed at some point.

  • Anime ep 7 1:00 Scott is flung into the future

  • Anime ep 7 3:59 Scott was brought into the future by his future self

  • Anime ep 7 6:30 Scott has his potential future explained by his older self. He’s told that his relationship with Ramona doesn’t work out.

  • Anime ep 7 13:06 Older Scott sends a robot back in time to capture his younger self

  • Anime ep 8 8:50 Older Scott is mad Ramona and Scott are still together

After a battle with his Older self, Scott again reconciles with Ramona, and the series end on a happy note.

  • Anime ep 8 17:56 Ramona fuses with her older self and reconciles with Older Scott

  • Anime ep 8 24:33 Scott and Ramona continue their relationship

Scaling

It’s shown in the recent anime series that an older Scott can eventually take on and defeat all the major characters in the series single handedly. This implies Scott overall is one of the strongest characters in the series. The anime also states every evil Ex is stronger than the last and Scott defeated most of them outright in his original series.
