Character Analysis: Broly(feat Lswan)

Background

  • Vegetable Name Pun: Broccoli

  • Age: 48

  • Height:  9’10” | 300 cm (LSSJ)

  • Weight: a lot

  • Originally created in 1993 then reintroduced in canon 25 years later

  • Forms the third of a symbolic trifecta between himself, Goku, and Vegeta

  • Power level as a baby: Over 9000

  • Power level as an adult: Maximum

Broly was born a Saiyan on Planet Vegeta and was placed among the elite Saiyan infants soon after his birth due to his inordinate power level which would skyrocket according to his emotional state. Jealous and fearful that Broly may overtake his son and bring ruin to the Saiyan race, King Vegeta exiled the baby to the remote, desolate Planet Vampa. Enraged by what he felt was a betrayal, Broly’s father Paragus renounced his king and commandeered a Saiyan ship and raced off to Planet Vampa where he found the newborn Broly fending for himself among the planet’s harsh atmosphere and vicious fauna. Unfortunately, Paragus’s ship was damaged during landing and he and Broly were stranded on Planet Vampa for almost 50 years.

Broly’s life on Vampa was brutal. He trained with his strict disciplinarian father, who placed a shock collar on Broly to keep his temper, and thus his overwhelming power, under control. Broly receive Saiyan combat training from Paragus as well as from avoiding the enormous monsters that lived on Vampa. One of which Broly named Ba and befriended until Paragus shot its ear off, eliminating the only friend Broly had. In return, Broly wrapped Ba’s ear around his waist and treated it like a blankie.

Eventually, father and son were discovered by the duo of Cheelai and Lemo, two Frieza Force members that brought the Saiyans to Frieza. Both Frieza and Paragus were eager for revenge against Prince Vegeta, and so used Broly as their means of enacting vengeance. Arriving on Earth, Frieza arranged a battle between Broly and Goku and Vegeta. Despite their far greater experience, fighting skill, and numerous transformations, Broly dominated the two Saiyans as they increased in power, first to Super Saiyan, then Super Saiyan Gods, and then Super Saiyan Blue. All the while Broly kept tapping into his rage and kept powering up, matching them at every turn. Eventually, seeing Broly’s plateauing power, Frieza murdered Paragus, causing Broly’s rage to explode and unlocking his first Super Saiyan transformation.

Out of options, Goku and Vegeta decided to fuse into Gogeta (while in the meantime Broly demolished Frieza) and finally gain the upper hand. Forced into transforming into his final state, Broly revealed himself as the Legendary Super Saiyan, only even this power wasn’t enough to match a Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta. Before he could be killed, Cheelai used the Dragon Balls to wish Broly back to Vampa and out of harm’s way. Soon after the battle, Goku visited Broly on Vampa, challenging him to a future sparring match, something Broly seemed keen on taking him up on.

Similarities and Differences Between Canon and DBZ Broly

The above was Broly’s canon backstory introduced during Dragon Ball Super, but it is no secret that this version is a re-imagining of an earlier Broly from the Dragon Ball movies by DBZ. The two Broly’s are mostly the same character: they were both extremely powerful Saiyans rejected by King Vegeta due to their power. They both escaped with Paragus to a far off planet and where they both struggled to contain their enormous rage-fueled power. They can both access Super Saiyan and Legendary Super Saiyan forms. And they both fought Goku and Vegeta with similar abilities and attacks in revenge plots hatched by Paragus.

As you can see, the overall broad strokes of both characters are basically the same. It’s in the details where they differ. DBZ Broly is pure evil and utterly psychotic, driven mad at a young age by a baby Goku’s incessant crying (a source of immense confusion/derision/glee from the fanbase). Canon Broly is a soft-spoken gentle giant, but struggles with his repressed rage at the abuse he suffered for decades at the hands of his father. He was exiled from Planet Vegeta years before Goku was born and couldn’t give a shit about him as an adult. Canon Broly was exiled to Vampa, whereas DBZ Broly was exiled to New Vegeta. Paragus’s scheme involved Frieza in the new movie, while his scheme was self-funded in the original. So the differences between the two are primarily personality and plot-centric.

All this is to say I think it’s fine to composite the abilities between the new and old Broly’s. They’re virtually the same character in regards to powers and origin, and they already share a number of techniques, so it’s likely the ones Canon Broly doesn’t show that DBZ Broly does would likely still carry over. Of course, Canon Broly is far stronger than his predecessor due to the massive power jump in Super compared to Z,

Experience

Compared to Saiyans like Goku and Vegeta, Broly actually has relatively little direct combat experience. He’s battled for survival on Vampa, slaying monsters that had been trying to eat him since he was an infant (something that speaks to his ingrained Saiyan warrior instincts), and has received training from his father Paragus. Paragus likely instructed him in the basics of Saiyan combat, though Paragus himself was no great warrior so the quality of his education is suspect.

Despite this, Broly has proven himself as a warrior and martial artist in his fight against Goku, Vegeta, and then Gogeta, managing to hang with and surprise them with his fighting ability and giving them a run for their money. Vegeta, for instance, stated bluntly that Goku had no chance of fighting Broly alone, and proved this notion even further when the two of them together were still no match. Broly also went on to fodderize Frieza, at one point the most powerful and feared being in the galaxy, for over an hour without breaking a sweat. Broly even managed to keep up with Gogeta and force him to go all-out to kill him, a feat no other Dragon Ball character has ever accomplished.

DBZ Broly is similarly green, though in his favor, he was able to take on even more Z-fighters all at once: Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, and Piccolo, without showing a hint of fatigue. It was only until Goku absorbed everyone’s remaining ki and punched Broly in the exact spot he was stabbed as a baby that he won. Although his power was the driving force in his dominance (he was literally just FAR stronger than the Z-fighters), he did manage to incorporate clear wrestling style moves into his arsenal, indicating his training in isolation with his father. Both Broly’s are also much older than they appear due to the slowed aging of Saiyans relative to humans. Canon Broly is almost five decades old, and has thus had ample amount of time to get used to his powers, explaining why he’s able to use them with finesse even in a berserker state.

Arsenal

Battle Armor

As technically part of the Frieza Force, Broly was issued standard Battle Armor common to Saiyan warriors. This armor is stretchy yet strong and firm, and offers decent protection against powerful attacks from characters on the level of the Z-fighters. Broly’s armor managed to remain virtually undamaged for the entire fight, despite receiving attacks from characters who could at this point casually destroy universes, though this is likely due in large part to Broly’s ki enhancing his armor’s durability on top of his own. When Broly fully charged up into his Legendary Super Saiyan form, for instance, the armor was obliterated.

Senzu Beans

Broly was given two senzu beans by Goku at the end of the Super movie. Eating a Senzu bean will instantly restore one to full health. They’ll be fully rested and their ki reserves will fill. Senzu beans cannot heal physical wounds, however, nor can they cure illnesses. Their effect is similar to if the user slept for several days. Anything that wouldn’t be “healed” by that rest will remain. The beans are invaluable to Saiyans in particular, who can abuse their restorative properties to activate an instant zenkai boost mid-battle.

Abilities

Saiyan Physiology

Broly is a Saiyan, a humanoid alien race with vastly enhanced strength, speed, and durability relative to humans. Saiyans are also born with vast reserves of ki or life force, which they can use to enhance their physical state as well as project from their bodies and weaponize. Broly himself was born with a “power level” (a numerical value estimated by a computer that measures how much ki a being possesses) of 10,000 which is OVER 9,000!!!!

A side note on power levels...the numbers themselves have been inflated so much over the years that they’re basically meaningless outside of one key factor: a higher power level does mean that a being is stronger, faster, and tougher on average than a being with a lower power level. They cannot be scaled geometrically (a PL of 10 does not necessarily mean you’re twice as strong as someone with a PL of 5), since doing so would mean characters like Mr. Satan and Farmer with Shotgun would be capable of destroying continents if scaled to a character like Saiyan Saga Vegeta, who could destroy the Earth with a PL of 18,000. It just doesn’t make sense mathematically. And while there are exceptions to the rule, for instance: focused ki attacks will increase in power level beyond what their user possesses at base like in Goku and Piccolo’s fight against Raditz, by and large that rule remains consistent.

All that is to say, Broly had a power level rivalling Saiyan Saga characters as just an infant, which is made consistent in the first movie where the infant Broly’s ki force field was strong enough to withstand an exploding planet. Canon Broly shares this power level.

Broly can also sense ki, as evidenced by him recognizing Goku had instant transmissioned to Vampa before seeing him. This allows him to know where an opponent is even if he can’t see or hear them, though he is likely not trained enough to rely on it if blinded.

Lastly, Saiyans possess a monkey tail which allows them to transform into enormous Great Apes, boosting their power by a factor of ten. However, Paragus removed Broly’s tail when he was younger, though his Wrath State allows him to access this power without a transformation.

Zenkai

Also known as Saiyan Power, the Zenkai boost is an ability inherent to the Saiyan race that allows them to grow stronger after receiving life-threatening injuries, or even in the middle of battles. Other Saiyans like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, etc. have consciously or unconsciously utilized this ability, but Broly’s Saiyan Power is slightly different. Broly’s power will increase relative to his emotions. The more excited/angry/grief-stricken he is, the more his power will grow. This was what allowed him to increase his strength from being beneath a Base Vegeta to keeping up with a SSJ Vegeta only minutes later, without even transforming. Broly would continue to receive Zenkai boosts throughout the rest of his fight, and combined with his transformations, would allow him to overpower a SSJ Gogeta, and even force a SSB Gogeta to go all out just to kill him.

Broly’s zenkai is not unlimited, however. Against an opponent significantly stronger than himself (ex. SSB Gogeta), he will be unable to bridge the gap in ki, and receiving enough damage will dampen his rage. This has the back-handed benefit of returning to his senses, but at the cost of his ever-increasing power. Against an opponent of similar or lesser power than himself, however, his constant zenkai boosts coupled with his immense ki reserves allow him to fight for extremely long amounts of time, such as when he battered Frieza for over an hour without tiring.

DBZ Broly’s zenkai is similar, but with the addition that its trigger seems to include Broly just using his powers at all, as if there’s so much ki inside of him that he can’t safely contain it and needs to let it out. That’s likely why, once Goku opens up Broly’s childhood scar in his stomach, his body erupts with ki and explodes.

Mimicry

Although he only utilized it briefly, Broly has shown a knack for immediately copying ki techniques after only seeing them once, specifically copying Goku’s God Bind. Mimicry is a skill only the greatest martial artists in the Dragon Ball universe have mastered, like Goku or Majin Buu (whom Goku compliments), and it speaks to Broly’s ingrained Saiyan warrior prowess that he can accomplish this (especially copying a God technique when he himself lacks God ki) while in a berserker state.

Ki Techniques: Aside from some stand outs, Broly’s ki techniques are less versatile than someone like Majin Buu or even Goku. He mostly relies on overpowering his opponents with raw force, and his ki attacks reflect that, most of which are variations of his Eraser Cannon.

  • Flight: Like most Dragon Ball characters, Broly can fly at extremely high speeds and with enough control and agility to allow him to fight and dodge freely in midair. He’s shown able to fly interstellar distances even as just an infant.

  • Powered Shell: Essentially a ki force field, Broly can surround himself in a translucent energy bubble to protect him from attacks. Most notably, his force field was strong enough to survive the destruction of Planet Namek by Frieza as just a newborn infant. He can also use this to catch punches and enmesh them in his ki, briefly trapping an opponent and allowing Broly to counterattack.

  • Telekinesis: In Broly: Second Coming, Broly was able to choke Goten without touching him, similar to a Force Choke from Darth Vader. While Canon Broly has not specifically replicated simple telekinesis, he has learned God Bind which is effectively the same thing, and other ki users like Goku, Frieza, and Cell can all perform telekinesis as well, so it can likely be composited.

  • God Bind: Similar to telekinesis, Broly can surround an opponent in an aura of his own ki to halt their movements and attack them while they’re vulnerable.

  • Ki Blast: By gathering his ki into his hand, Broly can turn it into a powerful projectile. Broly can fire simple ki blasts easily like a machine gun, and can charge them up for more power. This is the most basic way to weaponize one’s ki.

  • Eraser Cannon: This ki blast is Broly’s signature move. It’s fairly straightforward: Broly charges up a powerful green ki ball in his hand and throws it like a baseball at whatever he wants to destroy. The Eraser Cannon’s strength varies, and has been shown to cross interplanetary distances and obliterate the planet Shamo casually.

  • Double Eraser Cannon: As expected, Broly charges two eraser cannons at once, one in each hand, before throwing them.

  • Trap Shooter: A machine gun like stream of ki bolts fired from one hand.

  • Eraser Shot Volley: A quicker but less powerful version of the Eraser Cannon which Broly can throw out easily.

  • Wrathful Charge: Another variation of the Eraser Cannon, but now projected from his chest. Broly rushes towards an opponent and “chest bumps” them with a ki blast.

  • Eraser Blow: Similar to the Wrathful Charge but now with a slap instead of a chest bump, Broly charges an Eraser Cannon in his hand before rushing forward and exploding it point-blank in someone’s stomach.

  • Blaster Meteor: Broly surrounds himself with a ki force field and then projects a random innumerable deluge of powerful ki blasts that overwhelm anyone nearby and devastates the surrounding landscape.

  • Omega Blaster: The most powerful variant of the Eraser Cannon, the Omega Blaster is a ki bolt that starts off small but rapidly grows in size, becoming massive, and can be made large by ki blasts Broly continually adds to it.

  • Gigantic Eraser: A less-powerful version of the Omega Blaster, honestly not sure how it’s different from the Eraser Cannon, but I’m including it for posterity.

  • Seismic Power: Broly’s ki is so massive that it can induce earthquakes and change the weather just as a side effect of him powering up or transforming.

  • Planet Geyser: Broly tosses a ki blast at the ground, causing an erupting geyser of ki energy from the earth, eradicating anything on the surface or knocking it into the air.

  • Super Explosive Wave: A very simple explosion of ki that emanates from the user, often used as a last resort to weaponize the last bits of a user’s ki, or as a tactic to force an aggressive opponent away.

  • Gigantic Breath: A ki wave formed and fired from the mouth.

  • Planet Crusher: Broly charges a massive ball of ki above his head like a Spirit Bomb and then drops it on an opponent from above. This move was powerful enough to overwhelm SSB Goku.

  • Gigantic Catastrophe: Broly unleashes his full fury by firing a Gigantic Roar (a more powerful variant of the Gigantic Breath), followed by a series of ki bolts, and then topped off with a full-power energy wave.

  • Gigantic Omegastorm: A full power direct beam attack similar to a Kamehameha but charged in front. When this attack clashed with Gogeta’s Super Kamehameha, the combined energy shattered space-time and the two combatants entered another dimension.

Martial Arts Techniques: Despite lacking true formal Saiyan martial arts training, Broly has developed his own fighting style, likely developed in part from Paragus’s teachings and in part from his natural rage-fueled state while fighting. Broly’s fighting style can be summed up as “berserk wrestler,” incorporating a lot of classic wrestling techniques and fast, unpredictable strikes. Broly is definitely unrefined in combat, relying more on overwhelming his opponent with his raw speed and power over outsmarting them with technique. That’s why he was defeated by Gogeta, who could match his speed and power while also completely trumping him with Goku and Vegeta’s combined martial arts skill and experience.

  • Dashing Punch: Broly rushes forward, leading with a heavy punch. It’s powerful, but easy to see coming and avoid if one is quick enough.

  • Gigantic Throw: Broly grabs an opponent out of the air by their foot and throws them back at the ground.

  • Revenge Demon: A combination of a Dashing Punch followed by a Gigantic Throw.

  • Lariat: Broly clotheslines his opponent, choking them and slamming them into and through a wall. This move was powerful enough to knock Vegeta out of his Super Saiyan state and back to his base form.

  • Bloody Smash: Broly stomps on an opponent and jumps on them like a trampoline, pummeling them and cratering the ground.

  • Bone Crusher: A bear hug; Broly used it to torture Gohan.

  • Gigantic Slam: Broly surrounds himself in a Powered Shell, then uses himself as a wrecking ball, smashing into his opponent.

  • Gigantic Spike: Broly grabs his opponent by the head, then smashes them face first into the ground, cratering the earth and causing earthquakes.

  • Gigantic Press: Broly bum rushes an opponent, using his own body to inflict damage on them.

  • Torture Hold: Broly grabs an opponent’s hands and legs, lays them atop his shoulder, and pulls, stretching their body and breaking their back against him.

  • Wild Sense: Similar to the Afterimage Technique, Broly dodges away from an attack so fast that he seems to disappear, leaving an afterimage behind, then counter-attacking from behind his enemy.

  • Gigantic Hammer: Broly lifts an opponent up by the face, then drops them and punches them extremely hard, creating shockwaves. Broly used this one Goku and “shattered” him like glass, though this was likely just a visual effect. Still, it would be consistent with Broly’s other reality-shattering feats from his canon version.

Regenerative Healing Factor

Since this ability is not present in the canon movie, and is not common for Saiyans in general, this is the one power that might be somewhat questionable. Still, it’s worth mentioning. DBZ Broly has displayed a regenerative healing factor that has allowed him to survive fatal wounds. As a baby he was stabbed in the stomach, but healed shortly afterwards. As an adult, he was punched by Goku in the same spot which led to his entire upper body exploding, and he managed to heal fast enough to find a space pod and go to Earth minutes before Comet Camori crashed into the planet. Even during his transformation into LSSJ, his face erupts with ki energy and explodes, indicating his healing factor can heal massive flesh trauma nearly instantly.

Transformations

Wrath State

As befitting a Saiyan, Broly was able to transform into a Great Ape from a young age. Wary of this, Paragus remove his tail, denying Broly this form from then on. However, Broly has since developed the ability to harness the power of the Great Ape form without changing shape or losing any mobility. Activated by intense rage, Broly’s Wrath State increases his muscle mass and boosts his physical stats several times over, allowing him to go from getting demolished by a Super Saiyan God Vegeta in his Base form to holding his own against a Super Saiyan Blue Goku. The downside to this form is that Broly loses control over himself and virtually any ability to strategize outside of moment to moment combat (though he is still skilled enough to mimic one of Goku’s ki attacks).

Super Saiyan (C-Type)

Upon witnessing the death of his father, Broly activated his Super Saiyan transformation. The Super Saiyan C-Type form is identical in most ways to the regular Super Saiyan form: it turns the user’s hair bright gold and gives them a massive boost in power, speed, and durability. The main difference is that this branch of Super Saiyan leads to the Legendary Super Saiyan evolution rather than Super Saiyans 2 and 3 (or Second and Third Grade, which Vegeta and Trunks explored in preparation for their fight against Cell). This form comes with two notable features: first, the form has perfect energy control, allowing Broly to trash Golden Frieza for over an hour without tiring (after battling Goku and Vegeta long enough for the sun to go down), and second, the user’s eyes are whited out, indicating a berserker rage lacking any self control. While in this form, Broly was cable of slapping away a Galick Kamehameha from Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta, as well as force Gogeta to transform into a Super Saiyan in order to be able to physically combat him.

Legendary Super Saiyan

Also known as Full Power Super Saiyan in the new canon, this state allows Broly to tap into the full extent of his power, greatly increasing his height and muscle mass, and giving him bright green glowing hair. It is named after the legend of the first super saiyan, a mysterious figure from a thousand years in the past of Saiyan history who had unbelievable power, but could not control himself and eventually perished. The similarities between this figure and both versions of Broly is likely why Broly’s fully transformed state is referred to as “Legendary Super Saiyan.”

This form is considered the fully evolved form of the Super Saiyan state, setting it apart from the different Super Saiyan evolutions like Super Saiyan 2 or Super Saiyan God. It grants Broly an absolutely massive increase in power, enough that he was capable of overwhelming every opponent he faced save for SSB Gogeta. Despite the increase in muscle mass making it look similar to Super Saiyan Third Grade (the bulky form Trunks transforms into to match Perfect Cell), LSSJ does not reduce the user’s speed in any way. In fact, it greatly increases it along with their strength, as evidenced by Broly’s ability to casually dodge strikes from Goku and Piccolo at the same time.

The downside to LSSJ is that its immense power comes at a cost. The user possesses so much power that they need to release it in uncontrollable bursts every once in a while to keep from exploding themselves. This was an aspect of DBZ Broly’s powerset, but is consistent with current material. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Cabba makes mention that a LSSJ like Kale will in time be “consumed by their own power...and self-destruct!” This is not something brought up in regards to Canon Broly specifically, but he wasn’t in that state for very long, so it stands to reason that this weakness is at least still possible for him as well.

Likewise, if a LSSJ takes too much damage or is overpowered, their power will plateau along with their rage and they might even be reverted back to a previous form. In the Dragon Ball Super: Broly light novel, LSSJ Broly is reverted to SSJ by an attack from SSB Gogeta, and in the fully canon movie, Broly’s pupils return right before he is nearly struck by SSB Gogeta’s Kamehameha (indicating his plateauing rage), and when he is returned to Vampa, he has reverted to his base form. In essence, the LSSJ form is incredibly powerful at the cost of stamina, which will either result in depowerment or death if activated for too long. Vegeta also makes mention while observing Kale in the manga that “with so much power behind her moves, they may blindside you at first, but once you observe her movements for a while, you see right through them.” LSSJ’s power also comes with the downside that it is predictable, something Gogeta took advantage of in order to dodge every attack Broly threw out, not getting hit once.

Feats

Strength

Base

  • Both: Broly’s power level as an infant is 10,000, greater than Saiyan Saga characters who were nearly capable of planet-busting. This was as an infant.

  • DBZ:B (40:22) Baby Broly’s force field was strong enough to survive the destruction of Planet Vegeta.

  • DBS:B (51:40) Goku refers to Base Broly’s power as “crazy.”

  • DBS:B (39:03) The scouter cannot measure Broly’s power.

  • DBS:B (57:38) Broly takes a beating from Super Saiyan Vegeta but in moments Broly matches and surpasses him, punching Vegeta through a mountain.

Wrath State

  • DBS:B (1:00:49) Just powering up turns an arctic lake into a whirlpool.

  • DBS:B (1:01:38) Broly fires a beam of ki (Gigantic Breath) from his mouth that obliterates several mountains and filled the sky with green light. Goku states “if that had hit the ground, who knows what it would have done” implying it might have been able to destroy the planet. Vegeta is shocked by its power.

  • DBS:B (1:02:40) Punches SSG Vegeta through a mountain, despite Vegeta blocking.

  • DBS:B (1:04:08) Broly punches Goku into a giant glacier, creating a huge crater, then continues to punch him through it, thoroughly trashing base Goku.

  • DBS:B (1:04:28) Broly’s power up obliterates the glacier in a pillar of green ki.

  • DBS:B (1:05:16) Broly blasts SSJ Goku away with a single ki blast (Eraser Blow), then races behind him and knocks him back to the ground before he can recover, massively cratering the ice sheet.

  • DBS:B (1:07:11) Hurts SSG Goku with a punch.

  • DBS:B (1:09:18) Catches and crushes a ki ball in Goku’s hand.

  • DBS:B (1:09:23) “Puny God.” Briefly makes SSG Goku go unconscious (his eyes white out) and scream in agony.

  • DBS:B (1:12:45) Throws an enormous ki ball (Planet Crusher) that overpowers SSB Goku and obliterates the top layer of earth they’re fighting on, melting all the ice and revealing the lava field underground.

Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B (0:27) “The South Galaxy has been shattered by a Super Saiyan.” This is a classically contentious feat that, thankfully due to Canon Broly’s upgrades from the new movie, isn’t really worth debating any more, but I figure I’d mark it down here. It’s unclear whether or not Broly destroyed this galaxy in one go, or if this is a time-lapse of him destroying it over the course of his life. At worst, since we see the lights in the galaxy winking out, we know he is at least capable of destroying large stars.

  • DBS:B (1:16:07) Vegeta states that it’s “pretty obvious you’re not going to defeat him by yourself,” admitting that SSJ Broly has easily surpassed SSB Goku in power (and possibly Ultra Instinct Goku?), and Goku agrees, saying, “I think you’re right.”

  • DBS:B (1:16:21) Broly takes on both SSB Goku and SSB Vegeta at the same time, overwhelming them with a sea of ki blasts.

  • DBS:B (1:16:37) Broly charges up two ki blasts in his hands to block and deflect a combined Kamehameha and Galick Gun from SSB Goku and Vegeta.

  • DBS:B (1:16:53) Broly completely bodies Frieza with a ki blast emanating from his chest (Wrathful Charge). Frieza himself is terrified of Broly’s power and SSB Goku and Vegeta were forced to run away. Broly then starts trashing Frieza physically.

  • DBS:B (1:17:52) Goku admits that “fusion’s the only chance we have to beat this guy.” Again more indication that despite not showing up, Ultra Instinct likely wouldn’t have been enough to contend with Broly.

  • DBS:B (1:18:49) SSJ Broly pounds the tar out of Frieza so thoroughly that it forces him to transform into Golden Frieza, however, by (1:19:37), even Golden Frieza can’t keep up and was screaming in pain.

  • DBS:B (1:23:42) Broly fires a massive ki blast from both of his hands (Gigantic Omegastorm) to match SSJ Gogeta’s Super Kamehameha and the resulting blast shatters space-time and sends both of them into another dimension.

Legendary Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B (34:47) Paragus is afraid that Broly’s transformation into his LSSJ form alone would be enough to destroy New Vegeta.

  • DBZ:B (36:42) He’s so powerful that before the fight even really begins, Vegeta is scared shitless of him. Not only did just him powering up overwhelm Vegeta’s Saiyan Pride, this would also indicate Broly is far more powerful than Vegeta before even exhibiting his full power.

  • DBZ:B (43:02) Casually vaporizes the neighboring planet of Shamo with a ki blast. There were no large chunks of planet material left and the size of the resulting explosion stretched multiple planetary diameters.

  • DBZ:B (43:43) Trunks states that, if not dealt with, Broly will eventually destroy the entire universe. Piccolo later echoes this (53:37).

  • DBZ:B (44:15) Takes on three Super Saiyans, Goku, Gohan, and Trunks at the same time and effortlessly owns them.

  • DBZ:B (47:14) The side-effects of Broly releasing his pent-up energy results in countless massive explosions across the surface of New Vegeta, large enough to engulf entire cities and show up prominently against the curvature of the planet.

  • DBZ:B (50:19) Piccolo states that he could feel Broly’s power from the lookout on Earth, basically across the universe.

  • DBZ:B (56:07) Takes SSJ Vegeta out and returns him to base form in literally one hit.

  • DBZ:B (57:15) Crushes Paragus’ Saiyan pod with Paragus inside and then tosses it like a frisbee into the horizon. He loves his Papa. <3

  • DBZ:B (1:00:00) Dominates his final fight with Goku, even after Goku absorbed the remaining ki from Piccolo, Gohan, and Trunks, and was only overpowered after Goku received Vegeta’s ki as well.

  • DBZ:B2 (44:22) Matches a Family Kamehameha from first Gohan, then Gohan and Goten, then Gohan, Goten, and Goku’s spirit, and only loses out due to being interrupted by Kid Trunks.

  • DBS:B (1:24:28) Dodges a storm of ki blasts from SSB Gogeta and punch clashes with him hard enough to shatter reality again and return them both to their home dimension, possibly destroying that dimension in its entirety.

  • DBS:B (1:25:22) It’s worth mentioning that while Broly never quite manages to land a hit on SSB Gogeta, Gogeta still feels the need to dodge this attack.

  • DBS:B (1:27:44) His punch clash with SSB Gogeta vaporizes the ground all around them.

  • DBS:B (1:34:15) Goku says that before Broly, he was afraid he “had reached [my] peak” in power, recalling his motivation established at the beginning of the film (when he recalled the Tournament of Power), and admits that Broly is far stronger than he is. This is more evidence to suggest that Broly likely surpasses Ultra Instinct Goku despite never directly fighting. Even if Goku wasn’t capable for some reason of using Ultra Instinct in this fight, he still wouldn’t have had a reason to say Broly was more powerful if Goku knew he himself was still more powerful with UI.

  • DBS:B (1:34:22) Goku follows this up by saying Broly is “probably even stronger than Beerus.”

Speed

Base

  • DBZ:B (40:22) Baby Broly’s force field survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta and he flew fast enough to reach another planet in another star system before he and Paragus ran out of air.

  • DBS:B (54:47) Broly fights Vegeta first, at first unable to land hits on his faster and more skilled opponent, but then increasing in power and impressing Vegeta with his speed.

  • DBS:B (57:15) Broly can move faster than the eye can track and disappears behind Super Saiyan Vegeta (though Vegeta easily catches this attack).

Wrath State

  • DBS:B (1:03:54) Broly dodges a Kamehameha and several ki blasts from base Goku.

  • DBS:B (1:05:00) Dodges and disappears from sight out of the way of a Kamehameha from close range. Continues to go invisible in his fight against SSJ Goku.

Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B (37:30) Would have blitzed a base Gohan if not for Goku’s intervention.

  • DBS:B (1:23:20) Keeps up with SSJ Gogeta, both using the afterimage technique against each other.

Legendary Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B (43:02) Tosses a ki blast that travels to and destroys the neighboring planet Shamo in only a few seconds.

  • DBZ:B (52:21) Effortlessly dodges attacks from SSJ Goku and Piccolo (after absorbing Kami) at the same time.

  • DBZ:B2 (47:53) Broly reacts to the Family Kamehameha (he yells “KAKAROT!,” sends out a couple of ki blasts, then finally puts up a force field in the brief span of time after it breaks through his Omega Blaster and before it hits him) that sends him to the sun in about 8 seconds.

Durability

Base

  • DBZ:B (39:40) As a baby, he survived being stabbed in the chest.

  • DBZ:B (40:22) Baby Broly’s force field survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta.

  • DBZ:B (55:15) No sells a Kamehameha from Goku and emerges with zero damage. For reference, the same kind of attack vaporized Cell’s upper half.

  • DBZ:B2 (0:06) Apparently survived being torn apart by Goku’s punch at the end of the first movie well enough to climb into a Saiyan pod, go to Earth, and get frozen under a lake for seven years.

  • DBS:B (56:21) Near Super Saiyan Vegeta punches Broly through a mountain.

  • DBS:B (58:36) Base Broly tanks several ki blasts from Super Saiyan God Vegeta.

  • DBS:B (58:57) Tanks a punch from SSG Vegeta that sends him crashing through a mountain range.

  • DBS:B (1:00:21) Survives an enormous ki blast from SSG Vegeta.

Wrath State

  • DBS:B (1:01:58) Broly is completely unharmed and unmoved by a punch from SSG Vegeta.

  • DBS:B (1:07:52) Broly powers up again and is able to shrug off hits from SSG Goku.

  • DBS:B (1:12:34) Seemingly unaffected by being bathed in lava.

  • DBS:B (1:13:12) It should be noted that up until this point that Broly isn’t tired or slowed at all, even after fighting a Super Saiyan God and a Super Saiyan Blue and taking their attacks, indicative of his massive ki reserves.

  • DBS:B (1:13:28) Tanks a ki blast from SSB Goku that craters a mountain.

Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B (34:13) As a suppressed Super Saiyan, he doesn’t even register a kick to the neck from an SSJ Vegeta.

  • DBZ:B (34:49) Once again does not even react to a ki blast to the back from an SSJ Vegeta even before his LSSJ form.

  • DBZ:B2 (25:38) In his regular SSJ form, he tanks several blows and a ki blast volley from an SSJ Kid Trunks.

  • DBS:B (1:20:59) By the time Gogeta arrives at the battlefield, Broly has been fighting and getting stronger without tiring or slowing down for an hour, not including the time he spent Goku and Vegeta beforehand, further emphasizing his endurance.

  • DBS:B (1:22:35) Clashes with Super Saiyan Gogeta, taking several hits from him, including a rainstorm of blue ki blasts (Stardust Fall).

Legendary Super Saiyan

  • DBZ:B2 (37:35) Is completely unfazed by a punch to the face from an SSJ2 Gohan.

  • DBZ:B2 (38:58) Survives unscathed after being submerged in lava for almost 3 minutes (probably longer as there was a transition in the scene to Gohan waking up).

  • DBS:B (1:23:59) Transforms into Legendary Super Saiyan Broly, increasing his muscle mass even further (enough to shatter his Frieza Force armor) and eats a punch from SSJ Gogeta without even moving his head.

  • DBS:B (1:25:10) Tanks one of his own ki blasts redirected at himself.

  • DBS:B (1:25:38) Tanks an assault of ki blasts followed by a Stardust Breaker from SSB Gogeta, one of his most powerful attacks.

  • DBS:B (1:26:49) Broly, still visibly unharmed, powers up yet again without slowing down.

  • DBS:B (1:27:25) Withstands an assault of blows from SSB Gogeta.

  • DBS:B (1:28:04) Survives a Meteor Explosion from SSB Gogeta, an attack powerful enough to create a massive mushroom cloud similar to a nuclear explosion, and forcing Gogeta to visibly go all out.

Skill

  • DBS:B (14:34) Broly was slaughtering monsters and eating them even as a toddler by turning into a Great Ape.

  • DBS:B (55:45) Broly has never fought against another person (outside of his far weaker father), but is keeping up with a seasoned warrior and martial artist like Vegeta. Frieza notes that Broly is “quite quick to adapt.”

  • DBS:B (57:50) Vegeta mentions that Broly is “learning as he fights.”

  • DBS:B (1:06:11) SSG Goku traps Broly in a God Bind, paralyzing him, until he dispels it by powering up and reverses it, trapping Goku instead. Not only can Broly mimic ki techniques he’s never seen before, but he can do so in an enraged state through sheer force of will.

Scaling

As is the case with Dragon Ball characters, scaling is necessary to determine Broly’s true strength. His on-screen displays of physical strength are impressive, but do not come close to what his strength (and speed, and durability) should be capable of. On-screen he has punched apart mountains, vaporized planets, and even shattered the fabric of reality, but this is by no means his limit. The first two are physical feats that have been performed by Dragon Ball characters since the Saiyan Saga, and even Super Buu was capable of ripping holes in space-time. Goku had a similar problem for a while. The most he’d destroyed in the Namek Saga was a few islands, and yet we know he was bare minimum planet-level scaling to Vegeta and Frieza. So where does Broly stack up?

  • Goku: Broly was capable of beating the tar out of Base, SSJ, and SSB Goku before even going SSJ himself. In fact, he was capable of overpowering SSJ Vegeta while still in Base (and considering Vegeta and Goku are at roughly the same level of power, we can say that Base Broly would do just as well against Base and SSJ Goku). So how strong is Goku? Well, early on in Dragon Ball Super, SSG Goku was able to fight a suppressed Beerus, and each of their punch clashes created shockwaves capable of destroying the universe, specifically the Universe 7 Macrocosm.

    • It’s worth also mentioning that by a later point in the fight, Goku had integrated Super Saiyan God’s power into his normal forms, allowing him to use its without using the full transformation.

  • Vegeta: Broly should scale to Goku for the exact same reasons as Goku. Of note, Vegeta was able to produce enough energy while powering up as a SSB that he destroyed the Hyperbolic Time Chamber from the inside, shattering the dimensional wall between the Chamber and the outside world. This should serve as another example of characters at this rough level of strength being capable of affecting space-time with their raw might.

  • Beerus: The purple destroyer cat has long been a goal for Goku and the others to surpass, and according to Goku, Broly seems to have likely done just that. Goku states  that Broly is “probably even stronger than Beerus.” With that in mind, not only can we reinforce that he scales to the aforementioned universe-busting clashes that a suppressed Beerus performed against a BoS SSG Goku, but he also scales to (half of) Beerus and Champa threatening to destroy both Universe 6 and 7 in their battle.

  • Whis: It’s important to recognize that Broly is in fact weaker than Whis. We cannot scale them directly, however, knowing that Broly is comparable if not superior to Beerus, we can still establish a relationship between them. Specifically in regards to speed.

    • So we know Whis can fly at that speed. While we know Broly himself isn’t that fast (Whis easily dodges his attacks when Broly attempts to attack him), we can scale Broly to Beerus. In episode 2 of Super, Beerus was able to fly to a distant planet in 80 seconds, whereas it took Whis only 60 seconds.

  • Jiren: Scaling almost anyone to Jiren is difficult considering the pedestal he was placed on in terms of his power. Jiren was stated to be the most powerful opponent Goku had faced up until that point, and this was reinforced by multiple characters confirming he was comparable or superior to Gods of Destruction in power. Should Broly scale? Well, Goku states that Broly is probably stronger than Beerus, placing him in the same general tier as Jiren. The light novel also states that “no being that could’ve won against this Broly existed.” Further, the Saikyo Jump Editorial staff in the movie’s promotional material stated that "frankly, the enemy Goku and co. are up against in this movie is the strongest” and then reiterates that he could be stronger than a God of Destruction. So there’s good reason to believe that Broly is comparable to Jiren if not stronger (and this makes sense considering how Dragon Ball works, where even minor villains from a new arc are stronger than the main ones of the previous arc). So what has Jiren done?

    • His aura was so great that he shook the entire World of Void (a dimension infinite in size) just by powering up.

    • He was able to break out of Hit’s Time Cage, a separate pocket dimension where time is affected, with his power alone. This sort of thing isn’t uncommon for Dragon Ball characters, where being powerful enough allows you to resist certain types of hax (ex. Majin Vegeta resisting mind control, Candy Vegito maintaining control of his body despite being candy).

  • Toppo: Jiren is stronger than even God of Destruction Toppo, thus making Broly stronger as well. Similar to Jiren, Toppo was able to affect the entire infinite World of Void, changing its color.

Weaknesses

Most of his weaknesses are covered above where they’re relevant, but in summary: Broly’s power comes at a cost, it basically drives him insane, even in his Wrath State. So he won’t be strategizing.  LSSJ also likely threatens his life if used for too long and he can be knocked out of it with enough force. In general, he’s also relatively untrained and inexperienced. While his natural Saiyan instincts make him a better fighter than most, he’s still liable to be dominated by more skilled opponents that can keep up with his strength and speed.
