Character Analysis: Finalized Goku

Background

 

A monkey-tailed orphan who lived in a rustic area called Mount Paozu with his grandfather Gohan. After his grandfather's death, Goku inherited his prized possession, the 4 star Dragon Ball. Unbeknownst to Goku this Dragon Ball was part of a set of 7, that could summon a dragon that could grant any wish. His ownership of the ball eventually caused him to meet a girl named Bulma, who enlisted him on a quest to collect the rest of the balls. After this initial quest Goku became a student of several other martial arts masters, and saved the world from various villains who wanted to use the Dragon Balls for evil. The original Dragon Ball saga ends with Goku marrying a girl named Chi-Chi. 


In terms of personality Goku is light hearted and simplistic. He initially has little understanding of modern technology due to his rustic upbringing. 

  • DB Ep 1 2:00 The narrator explains Goku’s origin and how he was raised by Gohan and inherited the 4 star Dragon Ball 

  • DB Ep 1 13:21 Bulma shows Goku the Dragon Balls and explains how collecting them all can be used to grant a wish


In Dragon Ball Z Goku is revealed to be an alien warrior called a Saiyan. It’s explained Goku Goku was originally born on the planet Vegeta and was sent to Earth to conquer it. When Goku arrived on earth was then found by a martial artist named Gohan, he lost his memory due a head injury, and became a docile inhabitant of the planet.

Goku’s father Bardock attempted to form an assault against the galactic emperor and dictator over the Saiyans, Freeza, but failed. Freeza ultimately blew up planet Vegeta and most of the Saiyans

Only a few Saiyans outside Goku survived, such as his brother Raditz. Raditz attempting to contact Goku and recruit him to join the surviving Saiyan warriors is what kicks off the plot of Z.

In Dragonball Super Goku’s origin was added too slightly. His mother Gine and his father Bardock intentionally sent him away from the planet Vegeta because they suspected Freeza wanted to destroy the planet. This expanded origin was detailed in Dragon Ball Minus and Dragon Ball Super Broly..

  • Jaco ch 12 This short one shot acts like a new origin story for Goku. Retconning precious Bardock appearances. 

  • Super Broly 17:31-22:00 Is Goku and Bardoks revised backstory based on Dragon Ball minus


In terms of alternate continuities Goku can be divided between GT, Xeno and CC.

GT is an alternate continuity where the events of Super did not happen. Xeno Goku and CC Goku are versions of Goku, are involved in numerous timeline jumps, and lived through the events of GT and Super respectively(CC up until the end of Super).


Weapons/equipment

Power pole

A magical staff that was given to Goku by his grandfather Gohan. It can extend to lengths long enough to reach the moon. It can also reflect projectiles, and parry other weapons. It was originally owned by the character Korrin, and was designed to be a transportation device to take a character from the top of “Korrin’s tower” to the bottom of “Kami’s lookout”.

  • DB ep 124 6:03 Goku uses the power pole for its original purpose. To ascend from Korin's tower and reach Kami's lookout.

Flying Nimbus

A magic cloud gifted to Goku by the character master Roshi. The cloud can carry any pure hearted person and acts as a form of transportation. Those who are not pure of heart will fall straight through the cloud. The Flying Nimbus does seem to have some sentience, as it can listen to orders from its owner via a shout. If dispersed by a powerful attack, it can reform as long as the damage is not too severe. Powerful enough energy blasts can permanently destroy it. Master Roshi originally got the Flying Nimbus from the character master Korrin, who owns a much larger version of the Nimbus cloud. The anime adaption of Dragon Ball also has a black variant of the Nimbus that impure hearted people can ride on.

  • DB Ep 3 11:11 Master Roshi gives Goku the Flying Nimbus. A magic cloud the pure hearted can ride on. 


Senzu bean

A magical bean cultivated by the cat master Korrin. Eating a single bean can fill a person for 10 days, and its magical properties can heal a person of all wounds while restoring their stamina.

Hero switch

Hero switches are devices that allow the user to access Dragon Ball Heroes game cards and in their in-game avatar in any setting. 


Time Machine/time travel devices

In the newer anime specials the time patrol is shown having time travel armbands, which can send them to a chosen location on demand.

Abilities

Energy abilities

KI

A form of metaphysical life energy that exists within all living things. Humanoids and other sapient creatures can harness it to increase their physical strength and durability. As well as channel it for various energy attacks. A large enough outburst of ki can affect the environment, manipulating clouds and causing earthquakes.


God Ki

A specialized version of Ki utilized by deities. God Ki is more potent than normal ki and normally can’t be sensed by non deities. Goku utilized God Ki after performing the Super Saiyan God ritual, and has since learned to tap into that power on his own. In Xenoverse is also grants resistance to dark magic.


Sensing God Ki

  • Battle of Gods 19:54 Goku mentions he can’t sense Beerus’s presence and King Kai explains that it's because you can’t sense the presence of deities

  • DBS ep 9 3:49 Gohan mentions he can’t sense Goku’s god ki. Whis explains that gods cannot be sensed by mortals and that god ki is incomprehensible to them. They mention that his God ki may not be on the same level as Beerus or the Kai’s


Regeneration

God Ki can also be used to regenerate minor or major wounds, such as impalation.

Flight

The ability to manipulate ki to fly or lift oneself into the air. The technique was initialy introduced into the series by the crane hermit students Tien and Chaitsu. Goku learned it during his training with Kami and utilized it for the first time when fighting Piccolo Jr during the 23rd martial arts tournament.


Kamehameha

A powerful Ki attack invented by master Roshi over a period of 50 years. It’s an energy beam released from the user's palms. Goku first learned the ability by imitating Master Roshi and adopted it as his signature attack afterwards.  Goku has created several variants of the move, including a powered-up version called the Super Kamehameha, a variant that can bend around obstacles and a variation that comes out of his feet.

A powered-up Super Kamehameha.

 A K-wave that can bend around obstacles

  • DB ep 121 4:32 Goku uses a bending K-wave on King Piccolo. Turning it around his front side and hitting him from the back.

  • DBZ ep 4 13:02 Goku can bend the K-wave at an angle to hit opponents

Telepathy

The ability to speak to others mentally over a distance. Goku has often used the ability to contact his allies while he’s been in danger. Goku can also directly read the memories of others via physical contact. Picallo once used telepathy to speak to Goten and Trunks in the hyperbolic time chamber, while outside of it. Showing the ability can potentially be used to communicate across dimensions.

Kiai

Destructo disk

Spirit bomb

A special attack taught to Goku by King Kai. It allows him to gather life energy from surrounding organisms and planets,and form it into an energy ball projectile. The attack normally takes several minutes to charge up. Sentient creatures can also willingly give up extra energy to charge it much faster. If a person who’s pure of heart is hit by the spirit bomb, they can rebound it. Goku can also pass its energy to a second person. Goku also has multiple variants of the move.

  • DBZ ep 33 19:48 Goku passes on the spirit bomb energy to Krillen

  • DBZ ep 34 10:49 Krillen throws the spirit bomb and it rebounds off Gohan because he’s pure of heart

  • DBS ep 109 17:49 Goku creates a spirit bomb by gathering energy from his TOP teammates. Krillen mentions Goku can’t gather energy while in SSJ form due to that forms inherent rage 


Large spirit bomb

Spirit control is an umbrella term for various techniques for regulating and controlling spiritual energy. Goku learned advanced spirit control techniques after landing on the planet Yardrat after escaping Namek in the Freeza saga.

Instant transmission

The ability to instantly teleport to another location via KI. Goku can travel short distances, and long distances such as across the universe, or into the afterlife. Goku typically needs some kind of energy beacon to lock onto to travel to a given destination. If a location has no life or its inhabitants are too far away to sense, Goku will be unable to travel to that location.

Note:The original anime stated Goku dematerialized into light when using this move. This was a mistranslation.


In peripheral material it's stated that the move works by teleporting Goku into an alternate dimension where time stands still. Goku then exits at another location in space/time.


Solar flare

A powerful flash of light initiated by a hand gesture near the forehead. It can temporarily blind most foes. It was initially used by the character Tien, but Goku copied the move for his own usage. Though those using eye protection are resistant to it.

Telekinesis

The ability to lift small or large objects from a distance via Ki. Goku seldom uses the ability, but has moved small objects like a glass of water before.

Evil containment wave

A sealing move. It seemingly turns a person into energy, and flings them into a container (a rice cooker, a bottle,ect) and then traps them there with a magic seal. The move requires a lot of energy to pull off, and can potentially kill the caster. The move can be reversed or redirected, though only people with knowledge of the ability or who have seen it multiple times have been able to do so. If the container chosen doesn’t have the appropriate seal, the move will fail. If the power level of the chosen target is too high relative to the caster, the caster may also be unable to entrap the target and will die.


Failed usages


Hakai

A special ability used by gods of destruction to erase things or people from existence. The move erases subjects physically, spiritually and temporally across all timelines. Goku  used it once in the manga to erase half of fused Zamasu. The move doesn’t work on immortals. Powerful characters in Dragon Ball can also negate hakai/destruction energy with ki, including Goku himself.

  • DBS ep 59 21:00 Beerus says that when he kills a person with hakai, it affects all versions of them in all timelines

  • DBS ep 95 7:22 Sidra gives an assassin energy of destruction. He says those hit with it don’t go to otherworld, and are eliminated

Goku can project Ki from his body to form a giant energy structure of himself.

Goku does know some pressure point combat skills. He can strike a person precisely on certain sections of their neck to knock them out instantly.

After image

An optical illusion caused by high speed of movement. It creates an after image of a person that can be used to distract an opponent or divert the attention of their attacks. Goku initially learned the move by watching Master Roshi. Initially Goku could only make 1 after image, but by the end of Dragon Ball he could create more than 10 at once.

  • DB Ep 25 4:45 Goku creates an after image. A speed based illusion used to trick opponents

  • DB ep 26 14:20 Goku uses 3 afterimages to try to trick Rosh

  • DB ep 97 14:21 Goku creates 10 after images. Then makes an additional 2 to distract Tien when he tries to strike back 


Saiyan power/ Zenkai

A generic trait of the Sayains. Every time they recover from a near death experience they receive a massive boost in power.

  • DB Ep 3 9:02 Goku has better vision than an average human. Being able to see the character master Roshi clearly from hundreds of meters away while the human Bulma can’t

  • DB ep 74 4:51 Goku is hit by a beam from a character called Devilman. This attack is supposed to kill anyone with laten evil, but Goku does not die due to his pure heart

  • DB ep 80 20:30 Goku use a move called phantom star to fight Sky 

  • DB ep 27 4:00 Goku was put to sleep by a hypnosis move by Roshi, but was able to break out of it with some external influence(a person yelling it was time for dinner)

  • DB Ep 116 19:03 Goku survived drinking the poisonous ultra divine water

  • DBZ ep 14 16:14 Goku is resistant to drugged food meant to sedate opponents

  • DBZ ep 25 13:15 Krillen apparently can use the multiform technique when prompted by Picallo. Goku might be able to pull it off on a whim the same way 

  • Jaco Chapter 1 pg 38 Jaco mentions having an extinction bomb that can spread a virus that can whip out all humans on the planet

    • Jaco Ch 11  Pg 209  It’s mentioned that Jaco’s extinction bomb doesn’t have an effect on Saiyans 

  • DBS ep 5 17:04 it’s mentioned that despite not being able to sense Beerus, Goku instinctively got out of the way of an attack

Dragon Ball heroes have various “support” abilities. This includes buffs to speed, damage, defense,ect. Energy regen and durability negation. As well as some general debuffs to the opponents.

  • Dimensional Domain: Reduces stamina of opponent to 1.

  • Goku can also purify dark ki in World mission X

  • Capsule corp summon cards. They can be used without an arcade machine with the use of a Hero switch. They summon copes of Dragon Ball characters.

  • Various “subspace summons”. They open rifts in time and more directly summon characters like Arale, Zeno, Chronoa, Jiren, Etc

  • An empowered state called Shenron mode

  • Several team attacks, including one that summon various eternal dragons

Transformations

Kaio-ken

A power multiplication ability taught to Goku by King Kai. The ability multiplies speed, strength and endurance from 2x to 100x. Kaio-Ken requires intense concentration and Ki manipulation skills. Overuse of this ability can cause blowback on the physical body of the person using it. 


Super Saiyan

A legendary transformation of the Saiyan race. Goku rediscovered it after witnessing the death of his friend Krillen at the hands of Freeza. The Super Saiyan transformation happens partially in response to emotional turmoil once a Saiyan has reached a high enough power level. Official guide books state this form is a 50x power boost. This form tends to increase aggression. 

  • DBZ ep 66 16:47 Vegeta first talks about the Super Saiyan transformation

  • DBZ ep 95 19:30 Goku becomes Super Saiyan for the first time. The catalyst was Krillen dying 

  • DBZ ep 96 4:27 Goku is a Super Saiyan. The form increases his aggression


Super Saiyan 2

The true successor to the initial Super Saiyan form. It is characterized by electrical sparks and increased aggressiveness compared to the normal SSJ form. Guides imply it's about 2X stronger than the normal SSJ form.


Super Saiyan 3

The successor to the SSJ2. According to guides it is 4x stronger than a SSJ2. The form is not very energy conservative and is difficult to maintain with a mortal body in the human realm. Goku was most easily able to utilize it with his more resilient afterlife body during the 7 years he was dead after the cell games.

  • DBZ ep 282 18:50 Goku has issue maintaining full power as SSJ3 due to its intense energy consumption


Super Saiyan God

Another legendary transformation that utilizes god ki. It was originally obtained by performing a “ritual” where 5 pure hearted Saiyans. Initially it could only be utilized for a short period of time, training with Whis Goku learned to tap into this form on his own with no restraints.

  • DBS ep 9 13:59 The Saiyan God ritual is performed and Goku becomes a SSJ god for the first time

Demigra

Demigra is a recurring villain in Xenoverse, Heroes, ect. In Xenoverse he absorbs Toki Toki, and plans to recreate all timelines after erasing history.


Chamel

Any ally of Demigra. After absorbing Demigra’s power  and power from the “space time doors” in Ultimate mission X, his power was going to collapse the space/time of the Heroes game world. Xeno Goku aids in fighting him.

Grandpa Gohan

Goku’s grandfather and his initial martial arts teacher. He taught Goku basic martial arts skills and Bōjutsu(pole fighting)


Master Roshi

Goku’s most famous martial arts master. Roshi’s training focused mainly on enhancing a person's body strength, speed and endurance through activities like hiking, scavenging, farm/construction work and outmaneuvering wild animals. Goku also wore weighted clothing often while wearing turtle shells. Goku also received basic schooling from Roshi.

Master Korin

A talking cat who lives at the top of “Korrin’s” tower. His training involves the endurance test of climbing up the miles high Korin's tower itself. As well as fighting him to gain possession over the “sacred water”, a supposed magical water that grants those who drink it great strength. Korrin’s teaching focused mainly on learning how to waste less movement, and anticipating an opponent's attacks. Goku is able to obtain the sacred water in 3 days, a feat that took Master Roshi 3 years.

Popo/Kami

Goku’s final set of teachers in the original Dragon Ball were the guardian of earth Kami and his assistant Popp. They have a  large focus on how not to waste movement in battle. They also focused extensively on teaching Goku how to achieve inner peace and fight without relying on his normal senses. These teachings were mainly focused around sensing Ki, and advanced ki manipulation techniques. As part of Goku’s training he also used a room called the pendulum room to travel back to a recreation of the past to learn Ki manipulation directly from Roshi’s master Mutaito.

His training there is centered around strength training and mobility. For example he chases down to catch or knock out King Kai’s assistants Bubbles and Gregory under the planet's 10x gravity. King Kai also teaches Goku several Ki manipulation techniques, such as the Kaio-Ken and Spirit bomb.

Weaknesses

In Goku’s earlier days he often had a habit of growing weaker due to hunger.
