Character Analysis: Vegeta

Background

The classic Shohen rival who was introduced as a villain in Dragonball Z. Vegeta is a high ranking warrior from the planet Vegeta and was originally it’s prince. However after the saiyans were taken over by the warlord named Freeza, and subsequently wiped out by him, Vegeta was forced to spend his entire life acting as Freeza’s lackey.

  • DBZ ep 78 5:03  A flashback where Freeza talks about killing Vegeta’s father King Vegeta

  • Bardock 42:49 Freeza destroying planet Vegeta

  • Bardock 44:20 Vegeta on a distant planet as a child

  • Super Broly 24:35 Vegeta as a child on a nameless planet after planet Vegeta has been destroyed

Vegeta’s servitude for Freeza continued until his adulthood, when he overheard conversations from the saiyain Raditz during his battle with his brother Goku on earth. You see Vegeta overheard information about the magical wish granting Dragon Balls. Because of this Vegeta planned to come to earth and use these dragon balls to gain immortality, thereby giving him a way to defeat Freeza despite the power gap. But when he and his partner Nappa arrived on earth to face Goku and the Z warriors, they ultimately lost. Surprisingly however Goku chose to spare Vegeta, allowing him to stay alive for further storylines.

  • DBZ ep 35 17:01 Vegeta is spared by Goku/Krillen and he leaves earth#vegeta

Anyway Vegeta eventually showed up again on the planet Namek, attempting to collect the

Dragon Balls created by its inhabitants. But ultimately joined forces with the Z warriors when Freeza appeared on the planet looking for the dragonballs himself. Vegeta technically died during the conflict with Freeza, but was later revived on earth before the saga ended.

  • DBZ ep 86 16:10,18:00 Vegeta talks about his history and how Freeza destroyed his life. Before being killed by him.

After the Freeza saga Vegeta continued to live on earth. Typically acting more like an anti-hero rather than an outright villain. He eventually had a one night stand with long running character Bulma and had a half-saiyan son named Trunks. He  also aided the Z warriors against most of the major threats throughout the Z continuity, albeit often while making decisions that lead to further problems down the road. Including allowing the villain Cell to reach his perfect form and allowing Majin Buu to be revived, because he thought he could beat them both himself.

That said Vegeta does start to lighten up as Dragon Ball progresses. Towards the end of the cell saga the “future” version of his son Trunks was killed and  provoked a very strong protective reaction. He also attempted to sacrifice his life to stop Majin Buu in Z.

  • DBZ ep 189 13:00 Vegeta gets enraged over future Trunk’s death

  • DBZ ep 237 14:53 Vegeta hugs kid Trunks before sacrificing himself to try to kill Buu

In the sequel series Dragon Ball Super he actively shows character growth by apparently having married Bulma outright and generally acting like a fairly good father and husband. He also aided the cast against Freeza’s second coming, Goku Black, Moro and the Tournament of power under his own volition as well.

  • DBS ep 7 19:40 Beerus slaps Bulma sending her into a rage

  • DBS ep 77 13:33 Vegeta refusing to train because Bulma is pregnant

  • DBS ep 128 5:24 Vegeta thinks about the people he loves in his life during the TOP

More recently he’s even shown remorse for some of his past actions. Such as killing namekians on Namek during the Freeza Saga or the Saiyain’s war like nature in general.

Abilities

Ki

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Ki

A form of metaphysical life energy that exists within all living things. Humanoids and other sapient creatures can harness it to increase their physical strength and durability. As well as channel it for various energy attacks. A large enough outburst of ki can affect the environment, manipulating clouds and causing earthquakes. Vegeta has learned to sense Ki as well.

It’s mentioned Ki control is needed to increase physical power

God Ki

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Ki

A specialized version of Ki typically utilized by deities. God Ki is more potent than normal ki and normally can’t be sensed by non deities. Goku first learned how to utilize God Ki after performing the Super Saiyan God ritual, while Vegeta learned how to use it via training alone.

  • DBS ep 27 6:49 It's stated Vegeta learned how to use god ki without the usage of the saiyan ritual.

Spirit control

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Spirit_Control

Instant transmission

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Instant_Transmission

The ability to instantly teleport to another location via KI. You can go both short distances, and long distances ranging from across the universe, the afterlife and outer worlds of the Kai. You typically need some kind of energy beacon to lock onto  to get to a destination. This typically takes the form of the Ki of an ally or general populace. Due to the nature of the instant transmission being connected to the ki sense, there’s a limit to the teleportation range based on the power and distance of the people you're trying to sense. It should be noted that while Vegeta TECHNICALLY learned this ability, he did not master it. By his own admission he would have a hard time using it again in a pinch.

  • DBZ ep 122 5:32  Goku first mentions the instant transmission move. Allows him to instantly move to a location by locking onto a ki signature

Note:The original anime stated Goku dematerialized into light when using this move. This was a mistranslation.

Fusion

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Fusion_Dance

The ability to fuse with another person by manipulating Ki in tandem with a series of ballet-like poses. Both people involved in the fusion must have similar power levels and physical statues. The poses they make must also be symmetrical, or else the fusion will fail. The fusion lasts approximately 30 minutes, though increased power usage can make that time limit drop considerably.

Transformations

Super Saiyan

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Saiyan

A legendary transformation of the Saiyan race that had been forgotten about for centuries until Goku rediscovered it after witnessing the death of his friend Krillen at the hands of Freeza. While later entries in the Dragonball canon would retcon it, it was initially portrayed that the Super Saiyan transformation happened in response to a Saiyan of a certain power level undergoing intense emotional turmoil. The official guide books state this form is a 50x power boost, though other multipliers higher and lower have been suggested by other media or Akira himself. Because this form has emotional turmoil as its trigger, the form tends to increase aggression. The “base” Super Saiyan transformation has several variants.

  • DBZ ep 66 16:47 Vegeta first talks about the super Saiyan transformation

  • DBZ ep 129 16:30 Vegeta goes SSJ for the first time in the show

  • DBS ep 7 21:09 Vegeta flies into a rage, making his SS2 form stronger than usual

Super Saiyan god

Another legendary transformation that utilizes god ki to power up a saiyan beyond the confines of SS3. It was originally obtained by performing a “ritual” where 5 pure hearted saiyans would pour their energy into a 6th. It initially could also only be utilized for a short period of time. After training with Whis Vegeta learned to tap into this form on his own with no restraints.

Beyond God

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/God-like_Saiyan

The ability to utilize some of the power of God ki without having to fully transform into any of the god forms. Vegeta learned to do this after training with Whis..

Super Saiyan blue

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Saiyan_Blue

Essentially the Super saiyan god form stacked with the normal super saiyan form. Its official name is super saiyan god super saiyan, but said name was shortened to Super saiyan Blue. Goku obtained the form after training with Whis on Beerus’s planet.

Ultra Ego

https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Ultra_Ego_(ability)

A new form Vegeta just obtained. It utilizes destruction energy and Hakai similar to the gods of destruction. Vegeta was taught the ability by Beerus after failing to learn ultra instinct. He named it Ultra Ego since it opposes that ability, and increases his strength based on the damage taken.

    • DBS ep 40 Hit apparently Freezes Goku during his time skip, but Goku overcomes it

    • DBS ep 43 6:47 King Kai says Goku was forcing himself into the future when fighting Hit

Ultra Ego also performs better against Granola than Goku’s Ultra instinct did

JIren

The strongest fighter in universe 11. Goku eventually fights on par with him after mastering ultra instinct. “Hypothetically” Vegeta’s new destruction form probably makes him around as strong and Granola is implied to be stronger.

  • DBS ep 111 12:00 Jiren is immune to an ability from Hit that can use stored time to Keep an opponent in a near frozen state.

Granola

The newest villain in Super. He’s implied to be stronger than any previous Super villain and Vegeta is shown to put up a decent fight against him before tapping into his new destruction form. Though some recent interviews put this up for debate.

Experience

 General training

Vegeta spends most of the series self training( though he was likely given formal training in his youth by the Saiyan people or Freeza’s men). Typically Vegeta trains with various characters like Goku or Trunks in the time slowing hyperbolic time chamber or in high intensity gravity rooms created by Bulma. He’s also recently gotten direct tutelage from the angel Whis and the god of destruction Beerus. Beerus in particular has taught him how to use Hakai. He also had some minor training over spiritual energy on the planet Yardrat.
