Character Analysis: Wario(Feat Hero)

Wario

#Background

Wario was first introduced in the Gameboy title Super Mario Land 2, in which he was portrayed as an evil inverted counterpart to the titular character (hence the ‘W’, being an upside-down M). Where Mario was altruistic, kind, and heroic, Wario is greedy, rude, and mischievous. He also exaggerates Mario’s features that can be seen as negative, such as Wario being obese and stubby where Mario is just a bit pudgy and shorter than the average human.

Though not entirely portrayed as evil nowadays, he’s not exactly what you would call morally good either. He is often seen with his partner-in-crime Waluigi (not brother, that’s been deconfirmed) in trying to foil the plans of the Mario Bros., or just generally trying to make them have a bad day. Though, he doesn’t really seem to keep in touch with him these days.

He now occupies Diamond City, where he makes money off selling his trademark WarioWare games and cons Dr Crygor into manufacturing them and the other well-known denizens into creating and hosting microgames for them. The WarioWare games can almost be considered their own separate continuity from the main line Mario games considering there’s rarely ever a mention of Mario and Wario’s motivations are a bit different, but considering the translucency of Mario’s canon to begin with, they can still both be used with no real issue.

#Arsenal

Bombs/phony swing

In the Mario Kart and sports games, particularly Mario Kart Double Dash, Wario and Waluigi have the unique ability to throw Bob-ombs and Big Bob-ombs, huge explosives with a blast radius that take over the width of a racetrack. He also materializes bombs in Wario’s Woods,Wario Blast, Mario Sluggers and Wario Land 3.

Yellow bomb:Used as Wario’s special shot in Mario Sports Mix. It’s a large yellow bomb that releases a gas that stuns opponents.

Wario Bucket: In the Japan exclusive SNES game Mario and Wario, Wario would drop a bucket onto the heads of the main characters in order to impede and disorient them, needing to be guided as their vision and sense of direction was impaired.

Hammer:Wario uses a giant hammer to swat at bullet bills and bob-ombs in Game and Watch Gallery 4, fire attack.

Magnet(Yoshi’s island DS):Used by Wario in his baby form. It attracts metal objects like coins and metal blocks.

Ultra-hand : The defensive power shot in Mario Power Tennis. Uses an Ultra-hand device to reach out and grab a far away object.

Vacuum orb: A vacuum used in Mario party 7 that sucks up coins from a chosen opponent.

#Other (Vehicles)

Wario Bike: Wario has a motorcycle which has both its transportational and combat applications. He can run enemies over or toss it at them. If destroyed, the pieces can be picked up and tossed around as projectiles as well. Oddly enough, he can also eat it, if… for whatever reason he would need to.

Wario Car: A large car Wario uses in some of the kart games and in cutscenes of the land series. Has no real combat abilities, but has been shown to be quite sturdy and useful for transportation given Wario can use it for racing.

Wario plane(Mario and Wario):A plane Wario uses in Mario and Wario. He drops objects on opponents from above when using it.

#Special Abilities

Farting/Gas Mask!/Wario waft: In the sports and Smash games, Wario can release toxic gas and explosions from his rear that can confuse and poison opponents or damage them. It also serves as a means of propulsion.

Mind control: In his original appearance in Mario land 2, Wario cast a spell on the residents of “Mario Land” that let him mind control them. This was done off screen, but the commercial for the game implies this spell is similar to a form of hypnosis, with Wario looking at and speaking to a victim with striped eyes.

Size alteration: An odd ability that Wario has been shown to have in the Nintendo Power comics and Wario woods. He can inflate his body to increase his physical size and strength. Significant damage will deflate him however.

Malleability: Wario’s body is extremely malleable, being able to be crushed, squashed and stretched with no ill effects.

Ground pound:As the name suggests, Wario leaps into the air and slams back down, throwing his weight into whatever is beneath him. This creates a shockwave in some games and can unearth buried items. Also known as hip drop or butt-bash.

Shoulder bash/Dash attack:Wario has a shoulder charge bash attack that’s used in the games for dashing through blocks or tackling enemies.

Corkscrew conk/Corksrew:A move that originated in Wario World, his up special in the Smash games. It is similar to Mario’s Spinjump, but it is also multi-hitting as he spirals through the air.

Mega toss, Piledriver, Wild swing ding: Wario also has grappling based moves based on Mario’s throw he does against Bowser in M64 and spinning piledrivers like Zangief.

Hyper suction/Chomp:Similar to the inhale ability from the Kirby series (fitting since Dedede has Inhale as well). Wario can suck in objects towards his mouth. In the Smash series this ability is combined with a chomping attack that heals Wario as he bites down on an opponent. In Smash 4, one of the variants of the move even stuns opponents with his garlic scented breath.

Mega strike/Swelled up Wario: The mega strike in Mario Strikers Charged. Wario inflates his body like a balloon by sucking up air and lets out a powerful breath that forces objects backwards.

Thunder cast shot, Belly blast: Two sports abilities that allow Wario to harness electric energy to add a powerful shocking affect to a projectile.

Phony ball:Wario pitches both a fastball and garlic. In the sports games this is meant to confuse the batter, but this can also be a pro injectile attack.

#Other 2(Transformations)

Reactionary transformations

More status ailments than forms. Reactionary transformations require being hit by a certain projectile or attacks (for example being burned turns him into Burning Wario who can burn other enemies but will still take damage from the fire, etc). They are normally only temporary.

All forms:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkUq0tOQhkk&t=162s

Ball Ni Naru: Wario turns into a ball upon being stomped or dribbled by sports-oriented bosses. Wario can also turn his opponent into a ball in retaliation to score points.

Bouncy Wario: Wario turns into a living spring after being crushed by an opponent. Can reach higher areas.

Bubble Wario:Wario gets trapped in a bubble and can maneuver underwater to a limited extent.

Crazy Wario: Wario gets intoxicated or made dizzy. The form has a lack of movement and finesse but can burp to damage enemies.

Fat Wario: Wario gains a ton of weight after being thrown large food items. Though, he can burn this off fast with physical activity.

Frozen Wario: Wario gets frozen solid from an ice attack. Form sends him sliding backwards into enemies or objects as a battering ram.

Flaming Wario: Results from being set on fire. Increases Wario’s speed and lets him crash through certain objects, but lacks control.

Puffy Wario: Results from various insect stings. Makes Wario float in the air for a limited amount of time.

Zombie Wario: Results from coming into contact with various undead creatures. Makes Wario invincible but reduces his speed and jumping ability. Also sinks through certain floors.

Ball of string Wario: Results from being wrapped in string. Allows Wario to bounce around an environment.

Electric Wario: Results from an electric attack. Causes Wario to hold a charge that can damage enemies.

Invisible Wario: Results from a potion from another character. Turns Wario invisible.

Snowman Wario: A semi-transformation achieved from having large amounts of snow fall on top of him. He can freeze enemies or roll with enough force and speed to bust through blocks.

Vampire Wario:Wario has actually achieved vampirism on a few occasions. He has the ability to transform into a bat and has vague untold “supernatural abilities” when in this form.

Vampire bat Wario:Similar to the vampire transformation, only he turns into a human-bat hybrid that flies and sucks the blood of his enemies.

Tiny-Wario

Wario can split himself into multiple tiny Wario clones. These tiny Wario’s are physically weaker and he loses some of his abilities in this state, but they are more agile and lighter. (It’s possible that this cloning is a result of Penny Crygor’s technology rather than his own ability in Smooth Moves, but he is seen having just a Mini Wario form in other games, so it’s not too far off.) In some games Wario himself will take a tiny form after taking damage or being cursed.

Power-ups

Traditional Mario power-ups. Normally lost upon a deadly blow.

Carrot/Bunny Wario: Allows Wario to hover in the air for short periods of time.

Fire flower/Fire Wario

Self-explanatory if you’re at all familiar with Mario games. Wario gains the ability to project fire-based attacks.

Power flower/Metal Wario:Similar to the Metal Cap. Allows  the user to become more durable, stronger, and heavier than normal. For some reason, can also breathe underwater.

Super star/Invincible Wario:Used in the older Wario land games. Grants temporary invincibility.

Jet pot/Jet Wario: Increase jumping and walking speed. Also grants the ability to glide.

Bull pot/Bull Wario: Increases physical strength. Grants the ability to make shockwaves and stick to walls.

Dragon pot/Dragon Wario: Allows Wario to shoot fire from his cap

Dragon crystal/dragon Wario(virtual boy ver): Similar to the above. Let’s Wario shoot fire from his cap.

Eagle statue/Eagle Wario: Similar to the jet pot. Increases speed and jumping ability, and allows Wario to glide.

King dragon Wario: Combines the eagle and dragon forms. Allows Wario to fly fairly freely, breath fire from his cap and increases speed.

Garlic /Wario-Man: A transformation Wario achieved after eating an old piece of garlic he found in the fridge. The form grants him a significant increase in speed, strength, durability, and air maneuverability. It also instantly heals Wario and cures him of status ailments such as sickness once the form is accessed. He can also fly.

Disguises

Various costumes and disguises Wario can turn into at will in the game Master of Disguise.

Cosmic wario:Gains a space suit with a floaty moon jump and ray gun that can attack as well as create ladders and other platforms.

Arty Wario:Wario gets a paint brush that can create blocks, platforms, switches, healing items and doors.

Genius Wario Gains special goggles that allow him to see invisible objects and pathways.

Sparky Wario:Gives wario the ability to light up room and attack opponents with electricity.

Captain Wario: Gives Wario an inner tube and lets him turn into a submarine that can shoot torpedoes.

Dragon Wario(MOD ver): Can breath fire and survive in lava.

Wicked Wario: Grants the ability to fly.

#Experience

Wario has had experience as a major villain in his first appearances, seizing control of “Mario Land” and commanding forces like Tatenga. He has also planned and carried out petty crimes both with and without Waluigi. He has engaged in combat with the Mario Bros on multiple occasions, as well as-like most Mario characters- having an extensive sports background and surviving every main Mario Party game, an impressive feat in and of itself.
