Character Analysis: Might Guy(Feat Lousy)

 Background

Height: 184cm (6’6)

Weight: 78.4kg (178.2 lbs)

Age: 35

Might Guy was born to a Hidden Leaf ninja by the very foreboding name of ‘Might Duy’. Due to his father’s poor proficiency in Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, as well as his inability to complete simple missions or advance in any way, Duy had the unfortunate moniker of ‘Eternal Genin’. Guy, who also lacked skill in Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, didn’t seem to have a much more promising future after he failed the exam to enter the Hidden Leaf Village’s academy. Surprisingly however, the upbeat and ever-optimistic outlook of his father would end up being Guy’s biggest motivation in his training, and his path to becoming one of the Hidden Leaf Village’s top ninjas.

Around this time he met Kakashi, his eternal rival. Kakashi shrugged Guy off as someone who wouldn’t be accepted into the academy. But his father, Sakumo, seeing the training and hard work Guy was putting in, thought he would be picked by the academy as one of the alternatives. Sakumo’s prediction was confirmed, and Guy would end up being accepted, and graduating.

Guy then took a variety of different missions in hopes of advancing further as a ninja. On one particular mission, his team had a run in with the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, a group of ever-changing owners of 7 legendary swords from the village of the same name. Guy and his team were clearly outclassed, with little chance of surviving the encounter. Before anything could happen however, Duy intervened. Guy questioned what his Eternal Genin father could do against 7 Jonin level ninja. But as it turned out, Duy wasn’t quite as incompetent as he appeared to be.

Over his 20 year career as a genin, Duy had trained tirelessly to master one forbidden technique: The Eight Inner Gates. This would be the only move Duy passed on to Guy, along with a self-imposed condition for when Guy can use the move. That condition being ‘to protect something precious enough to give your life for’. Guy’s father would do exactly that on that day to save his son.

Motivated even more to become the best ninja possible, Guy continued training in his father’s memory. He achieved a Chunin, and eventually Jonin rank, and developed an intense, but friendly rivalry with Kakashi. Seeing Kakashi as the ultimate test of whether or not perseverance could overcome natural talent, Guy and him would regularly have competitions ranging from eating contests, to 100 meters dashes, to simple Rock Paper Scissors. Both also ended up training their own separate teams of Genin. One particular Genin Guy took a shine to was Rock Lee, who received the same pep talk about hard work that Guy received from Duy.

Beyond simple pep talk, Guy also helped Lee recover from a crippling injury he suffered after using the Inner Gates during to fight Gaara, and saved his students by defeating Kisame (or rather a doppelganger). His many missions and time training his students ultimately led to a final confrontation between him and Madara Uchiha during the Fourth Shinobi War. Knowing it was his only option, and that he was indeed protecting something precious to him, Guy activated the final gate, something that would assuredly kill him, and managed to not only fight on-par with Madara, but seriously injure him with a powerful final kick.

While he ultimately failed to defeat Madara, thanks to Naruto’s ninja-Jesus powers, Guy’s lifeforce was stabilized, allowing him to live out the rest of his days, albeit with an irreparably damaged leg. But to nobody’s surprise, a bad leg can't stop passionate youth, and it certainly didn’t stop Guy. Though it did give him reason to retire from more intense field work, instead becoming an academy teacher, and instructing future generations on what he knows best: Taijutsu.

Important things about the Naruto universe…

Like most Shonen shows, Naruto has its own energy system: Chakra. There are several different caveats to how Chakra works, but it’s more or less ki, a life energy that’s dependent on a user’s physical, mental, and spiritual prowess. This energy is used for a variety of different mystical techniques, all of which fall into one of the following categories...

Genjutsu - Sensory techniques that are meant to create false images and illusions by messing with the target’s flow of chakra to their cerebral system. An example of this would be the Toad Confrontation Chant that Jiraiya can use.

Senjutsu - Techniques that revolve around drawing upon the chakra of the natural world around the user.

Taijutsu - Essentially any technique that is purely physical, or some variant of a martial arts move. Some moves technically don’t even require chakra, though they can definitely be enhanced with it. For the purposes of this fight, this is the most relevant category, since Guy specializes in it.

Ninjutsu - The catch-all category for pretty much everything else. Ninjutsu can range from anything from spitting fire, to creating clones of oneself, to large-scale energy attacks.

Experience

Being one of the hardest working members of the Hidden Leaf Village, Guy has a plethora of experience. Throughout his time he has…

-Managed to get into the Hidden Leaf Village’s academy, despite initially failing the test, and eventually become an accomplished Chunin and Jonin-ranked ninja.

-Taught a team of Genin consisting of Rock Lee, Neji Hyuga, and Ten-Ten.

-Has led or participated in a series of dangerous missions. The Naruto Databook lists a total of 788 missions Guy had participated in during his career. 86 D-rank, 270 C-rank, 210 B-rank, 199 A-rank, & 23 S-rank missions respectively.

-The same databook claims Guy is skilled in using multiple different weapons, though he clearly prefers nunchuks.

-Fought and defeated Kisame, an S-rank ninja, and one of the 7 Legendary Swordsmen. (Naruto, Chapter 506).

-Assisted Naruto, Kakashi, and Killer B in fighting Obito. (Naruto, Chapter 594).

-Fought on-par with, and critically injured Madara after unlocking all 8 Inner Gates.

-It’s not a feat of ‘experience’ per-say, but it’s worth noting that Madara, the former leader of the Uchiha clan, and one of the strongest ninjas in the series acknowledged Guy’s power and skill, claiming him to be the greatest Taijitsu user he has ever met.

-Also worth mentioning that Guy isn’t really a brute, or only focused on martial arts. He has been shown to develop strategies (albeit, simplistic ones) based around countering opponents. Such as developing a fighting style based around fighting an opponent by watching their feet. This was done to overcome the Sharingan.

Arsenal

Soshuga: A set of twin nunchaku that Guy used during the 4th Shinobi war, mainly while fighting Obito alongside Naruto and Kakashi. They provide slightly more elaborate attack options, and can deflect small projectiles. This particular set of weapons have since been lost to Guy, though should be fair-game for this fight. He also wields and fights using a more standard set of generic nunchucks.

Bow & Arrow: A simple bow with a string used to fire arrows. It and the Kusarigama are exclusive to anime filler.

Kusarigama: A sickle connected to a chain with a large, heavy weight at the end.

Abilities

Martial Arts/Taijutsu Mastery: Guy’s bread and butter is Taijutsu, the most simplistic and straightforward of the 4 types of jutsus. His fighting style is referred to as Strong Fist, which focuses on deadly, bone-crushing strikes. While not as fancy as Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, Guy’s focus on Taijutsu has its perks. For one, most Taijutsu techniques don’t require hand symbols, or a ‘charge time’, and thus can be initiated much more quickly. For two, Guy’s focus on it has given him the benefit of being able to ignore forms of energy/chakra absorption and nullification.

For example, when fighting Kisame, his Daytime Tiger was able to overcome Kisame’s Great Shark Bullet, a move that absorbs and converts chakra. This was because the technique wasn’t actually composed of chakra, it was simply an incredibly powerful airblast created by Guy’s physical strength. It also was what allowed him to go toe-to-toe with Madara, who was more or less able to ignore Ninjutsu and Genjutsu techniques with his Yin-Yang Release, but not Taijutsu techniques.

Ninjitsu: Guy obviously prefers Taijutsu, but is capable of performing Ninjutsu techniques as well. Though the only one he’s ever shown using is summoning Ningame.

Basic Chakra Control: Guy, like other ninja in his village, has learned basic ways on how to control his chakra. Which lets him do mystical things such as walk up walls, or on water.

Guy walking on water.

Pseudo-flight: When using the 8th gate, Guy’s kicks become so powerful that he achieves a form of pseudo-flight by kicking the air around him.

Shockwave Creation: Guy’s Taijutsu is so powerful it can produce concentrated shockwaves of air capable of damaging opponents, and holding them in place.

Pyrokinesis: His attacks can also move fast enough to ignite the air, producing fire-based attacks (see below).

Genjutsu/Illusion Resistance: Because Guy was fighting during the Sand Village invasion, he presumably was unaffected by the Feather Illusion Jutsu that was performed during the attack, and should be able to resist similar moves to some extent.

Taijutsu Techniques

Note: Some of these techniques are used only by Rock Lee, but considering Guy is the one who taught him said techniques, it stands to reason he knows them as well.

Dynamic Entry: More or less a flying side-kick that directly targets the opponent’s face. Oddly reminiscent of one of Bruce Lee’s own kick.

Leaf Gale: A spinning low kick.

Leaf Rock Crush: An elbow strike that utilizes both arms for stability and power.

Severe Leaf Hurricane: A backwards spin-kick powerful enough to create a gust of wind.

Seasickness Fist: A method of fighting similar to Rock Lee’s Drunken Fist, in which Guy uses his seasickness to perform a series of unpredictable, queasy motions.

Eight Gates: Guy’s signature technique, and main method of powering up. It revolves around 8 points in his body (the ‘gates’). These gates normally restrict and manage the flow of chakra in order to prevent the body from being damaged. By ‘opening’ those gates, Guy is able to overcome those mental limitations, increasing his power and speed substantially with each gate opened. This, of course, comes at the cost of making the user physically exhausted and causing potentially permanent or even fatal damage to the body. The 8 gates are as follows…

  • Gate of Opening: The user removes the subconscious restraints the brain places on the body to access 100% of their strength. It also allows the user to use…

    • Front Lotus - The opponent gets kicked into the air, as the user leaps up, wraps them in bandages, then izuna drops them to the ground in a rapid spinning motion.

  • Gate of Healing: Re-energizes the lifeforce of the user.

  • Gate of Life: Increases the user’s power more, and causes their skin to become red. Also gives them access to…

    • Reverse Lotus - An onslaught of rapid-fire blows, that ends with the opponent being wrapped in the user’s bandages, and smashed to the ground.

    • Leaf Super Hurricane - A powerful roundhouse kick.

  • Gate of Pain: Increases the user’s speed and power, at the cost of potential muscle tearing.

  • Gate of Limit: Further increases user’s speed and power.

  • Gate of View: Unleashes enough of the user’s power that it begins to create a vortex around them, capable of bending water. It also gives them access to…

    • Morning Peacock -  A rapid series of punches delivered to an opponent at such speed that it ignites the air around them, and creates fire. The fire in question can also be fired as long-range projectiles.

  • Gate of Wonder: A further increase in speed and power that and causes the user to sweat at an accelerated rage. It has the downside of slowly tearing the user’s muscles apart. In addition, the Gate of Wonder lets Guy perform...

    • Daytime Tiger - A powerful punch that forms an air-blast in the shape of a tiger, which can be focused and expanded at the user’s will.

  • Gate of Death/Eight Gates Released Formation: Once all 8 gates are opened, the user’s body begins emitting a red mist. This is their blood slowly evaporating due to the sheer increase in body temperature the final gate causes, essentially cooking their insides, and burning his body to ash. While assuring the user’s death, it also provides a substantial increase in power, and access to 2 final techniques...

    • Evening Elephant - A series of 5 powerful blasts of pressurized air fired from 5 different angles that both immobilizes and damages the opponent. It’s concluded with a final powerful melee strike.

    • Night Guy - Guy’s ultimate move, in which he manifests his chakra into a giant red dragon, then rockets towards his opponent in a final, devastating flying kick. The move is so powerful it distorts the space around guy, and creates an immense shockwave. It does, however, also guarantee that at least one of Guy’s legs will be irreparably damaged.

-A crude diagram of the Eight Gates for reference.

Other

Ningame - Guy technically has access to a turtle companion of his by the name of Ningame. Though he only uses a technique to summon him once, and it’s as a footstool. Ningame himself comments that he hasn’t seen Guy in forever when summoned.

Feats

Strength & Destructive Power

-Can casually break apart large stone blocks (Naruto, Chapter 595, Pages 9 & 10).

-Used the Daytime Tiger to make a massive airblast that completely eclipsed the tortoise island, Genbu ( Naruto, Chapter 507, Page 3).

Speed & Agility

-Leapt across the island of Genbu (Naruto, Chapter 506, Page 10).

-Can punch fast enough to create ablation and ignite flames ( Chapter 506, Page 13).

Durability & Survivability

-Can survive being at the epicenter of his own Daytime Tiger attack

-Logically speaking, Guy’s durability should be comparable to his destructive power.

Scaling

Who does Might Guy scale to?

Guy in his prime scales above Rock Lee and his other students, as well as high level Jonin, given he is one of the Hidden Leaf Village’s most accomplished ninjas, has defeated other S-rank ninja such as Kisame, is rivals with Kakashi, and Kakashi himself acknowledged his strength during his fight with Madara. Speaking of which, and perhaps most importantly, when using all 8 Inner Gates, Guy should safely scale to 10-tails Madara (and anyone comparable to or below him), who Guy fought on-par with, critically injured, and also gained the acknowledgment of.

Rock Lee

-Destroyed part of a giant meteor (The Last: Naruto The Movie).

Kakashi

-Can intercept lightning (Chapter 334, Page 14 & 15).

Obito

Raised the Shinju Tree ( Chapter 656, Page 2).

Misc

-Jiraiya’s Rasengan is established to be able to carve away a mountain (3rd Naruto Data Book).

-Naruto survived an attack that cut the moon in half

Weaknesses

Despite Guy’s impressive skills and abilities, he certainly isn’t flawless. Because he sticks pretty much exclusively to physical attacks, he lacks some of the variety and tricks other ninja from his series have. Though this isn’t always a bad thing by any means, and has led to situations where some opponents are taken off guard by his more straightforward fighting. The Eight Gates are incredibly powerful, but also put a huge strain on his body that can sometimes limit him to using its power to the fullest, or cause serious damage to his body. And if all 8 gates are used, Guy’s death is all-but guaranteed without outside intervention. Though the sheer power of all 8 gates means if Guy is dying, it isn’t without a fight.
