Character Analysis: Mob (Feat Lousy)

 Shigeo Kageyama (Mob)

Background

Height: 157.7 cm

Age: 14

Shigeo Kageyama is a seemingly ordinary, socially inept middle schooler with powers that are anything but ordinary. While eager to show off his psychic powers early on his life, Mob came to fear and suppress his abilities due to a combination of his childhood crush losing interest in said powers, and a traumatic event in which he accidentally hurt his brother and several bullies after losing control.

Wanting to learn how to better control his abilities, Mob seeked help from self-proclaimed psychic, Arataka Reigen at Spirits & Such Consultation. Who was actually a giant fraud, but chose to act as a moral guide of sorts for Mob anyway after discovering his psychic powers were the real deal. Reigen’s own words that psychic powers do not make Mob any better than those around him only solidified Mob’s rejection of his powers.

Rather than rely too heavily on his psychic abilities, Mob joined the Body Improvement club in an attempt to improve his natural physical abilities. He couldn’t avoid psychic shenanigans entirely though. Under Reigen’s tutelage, Mob completed multiple exorcism jobs against many dangerous spirits, and found himself at the center of more than a few conflicts against other spirits, or enemy psychics (or both).

Through it all, Mob’s maintained a very pacifistic and well-meaning personality, but never quite managed to learn how to control his psychic powers, or the emotions they are linked to. Until the day came that his childhood crush, Tsubomi, planned to move to another town. Mob attempted to confess to her, but was critically injured in a car accident before he could. Rather than having that be the end of it however, Mob’s power kicked in. His ???% form was unleashed and unhinged. His friends and enemies tried to stop his uncontrolled ramage, but all failed. Except one. Only when Reigen finally admitted outright to Mob that he was a fraud, and consulted with him about the nature of his psychic powers did Mob finally regain control, seemingly having finally reached peace with the powers that had plagued him all his life.

Experience

While Mob generally likes to avoid conflict, he has seen a lot of different foes and enemies in his time. The most notable adventures and achievements of his include...

-Took down a cult being led by the malicious brainwashing spirit Dimple (and inadvertently made a cult of his own in the process).

-Fought against a similarly talented psychic and would-be rival, Teruki.

-Teamed up with several other psychics to take down the 7th Division of an organization of psychics bent on work domination known as Claw.

-Investigated and defeated several different folk-creatures that arose from the collective fear society has for them.

-Became trapped in and eventually escaped a mind world created by the evil spirit, and former psychic prodigy, Keiji Mogami.

-Prevented the rest of Claw from achieving global domination by fighting its top members, and the organization’s leader, Toichiro.

-Fought against Dimple, who had revitalized himself using the great ‘tree’ that had been created from Mob’s battle with Toichiro, and brainwashed the rest of Spice City.

-Lost control of his psychic powers due to a combination of his childhood crush leaving town and him suffering an unexpected car accident. This made him enter his ???% form for an extended period of time, forcing many of his former friends and foes to try to stop him. Ultimately, none were able to except Reigen, who managed to reconcile Mob and the latent power he had continued to ignore.

Arsenal

Mob has nothing notable as far as weaponry goes, preferring to use his psychic powers and natural abilities.

Abilities

Mob’s abilities primarily revolve around the ethereal and telekinetic abilities they offer. They obviously allow him to perform feats of superhuman strength, speed, and durability, but they also let him use...

Telekinesis: Being a psychic, Mob can naturally levitate objects, crush things, and fly by generating a telekinetic force.

Mob levitating a ton of buildings. crushing someone to the ground. (Chapter 85.2) and flying.

Energy Absorption: Mob can absorb different forms of energy. Usually it’s psychic energy, but it appears to extend to things such as lightning, or even the environment around him. He can absorb energy either with direct contact, contact with his barrier, or from a distance. When in his ???% form he can subconsciously absorb energy across a fairly large radius.

Absorbing Serizawa’s psychic attack. (Chapter 89.3)

Absorbing Toichiro’s lightning (Chapter 90.7)

Absorbing Toichiro’s final blast that gets converted into a giant piece of broccoli (Season 2, Episode 13, 12:21)

Draining the energy of his opponent and the environment around him in his ???% form. (Chapter 18)

Serizawa having his energy sapped just by being in ???% Mob’s vicinity. (Chapter 100.2)

Absorbing a charged bomb containing the full combined power of Toichiro and Shou. (Chapter 100.1)

Spiritual Awareness: Mob can see and interact with spirits and ethereal creatures that are normally invisible to the human eye.

Mob perceiving and grabbing Dimple’s intangible form.

Psychic Empowerment: Mob has the ability to bestow psychic abilities, and amplify the psychic abilities of others.

Reigen casually obliterating members of Claw’s 7th Division after being powered to ‘1000% Reigen’ by Mob’s abilities. (1) (Chapter 47)

Giving Shou some of his psychic power. (Chapter 90.1)

Barriers: Mob can generate psychic barriers around himself to protect him from physical and psychic attacks. He can increase how powerful this barrier is, but always seems to subconsciously have one up that can prevent possession.

Using a barrier. (Chapter 32)

Preventing possession. (Chapter 14)

Psychic Energy Detection: Mob can send out a ‘radar’ sense of sorts that can detect the presence of espers and sources of psychic energy. This sense spans at least 20 kilometers.

Mob creating an omnidirectional ‘radar’ that detects several espers from 20 KM away. (Chapter 76)

Hypnosis/Mind Control Resistance: Mob has shown resistance to different forms of mind control, and has even been able to dispel hypnotic effects that were influencing others.

Resisting Dimple’s brainwashing. (Chapter 7)

Dispelling the hypnosis on others. (Chapter 7)

Chlorokinesis: Mob can command and control plants to grow, or wrap around opponents.

Commanding plants to turn against a spirit. (Chapter 57)

Astral Projection: Mob can have his spirit exit his body and possess others. He can use this to counteract possession, provided the opposing spirit isn’t strong enough.

Example of Mob’s Astral Projection. (Chapter 63.1)

Minor Gravity Manipulation: When Mob loses control and enters his ???% form, he unleashes so much power that he creates an increase in the gravity around him.

The gravity increase being mentioned. (Chapter 100.2)

Other

???%

Whenever Mob loses consciousness his latent psychic energy will take hold, and manifest itself in the form of ???% Mob. In this form, Mob becomes considerably more powerful, capable of causing a severe earthquake that spans kilometers, fight through multiple powerful psychics, increase the gravity around himself, and even passively absorb energy. The power appears to possess a consciousness of its own, as Mob had to confront and come to terms with it during the series’ finale.

Feats

Strength & Destructive Power

-Caused a severe earthquake spanning kilometers after ???% awakened.

-Dispersed clouds with a mass of buildings.

-Converted Toichiro’s final energy blast into a huge piece of broccoli.

-Created a large explosion in the sky.

-Gathered a bunch of clouds around Spice City.

-Dispersed a large amount of clouds above his school.

Speed & Agility

-Flew 20 kilometers to track down some espers in seconds.

-Piledrived someone fast enough to create ablation.

-Created a barrier to absorb lightning before the lightning connected.

Durability & Survivability

-Endured a giant palm strike that left a crater that shattered multiple buildings

-Absorbed a combined Charged Bomb containing Toichiro and Shou’s full power

-Logically speaking, Mob should be able to create a barrier that can endure the same amount of force that he can dish out with his psychic energy.

Scaling

Who does Mob Scale to?

In his ???% form and when using his full power, Mob scales above pretty much everybody in his own universe. He’s regularly touted and shown to be the most powerful esper in his world, has fought and defeated Toichiro and the spirit of Keiji Mogami. The former is the most powerful psychic of his organization Claw, and the later is the spirit of the man who was said to be the greatest psychic of his time. Mob also, for all intents and purposes, runs a gauntlet against his all his noteworthy friends and enemies in the series’ finale. So it’s pretty clear cut how much more powerful he is. Also, 1000% Reigen technical arose from Mob’s own power being transferred to his teacher. So feats done by 1000% Reigen should apply to him as well. Although in Mob’s case, he doesn’t really need scaling. By and large the most impressive feats in the series are all performed by him. Still, he does scale to characters who have...

The Dragger

-Started a small rainstorm when fighting Dimple.

Toichiro

-Blocked a psychic charge bomb his son had charged for 3 months.

Weaknesses

Mob is incredibly powerful, but not of his own volition. He is naturally very pacifistic and generally prefers peaceful means of resolving things. Though will use his powers to defend himself if necessary. In addition, he is still vulnerable to attacks and methods that neutralize psychics. His ability to absorb energy is also limited to some extent. He’s never outright been incapable of absorbing something, but struggled to contain Toichiro’s final self-destruct blast.
