Character Analysis: Xeno Trunks

 Note: A few youtube links may have broken since when these notes where taken and being posted as a a blog.

Background

A mysterious youth from an alternate future timeline in Dragonball Z and the son of Vegeta/Bulma. Trunks comes to the past in a time machine made by his mother because Goku dies of a heart virus in his timeline. This makes Goku unable to prevent the earth's destruction by two androids built by the Red Ribbon Army scientist Dr.Gero. During Trunks' time travel journey he helps the Z warriors fight off their androids and later helps them fight another android called Cell, who followed him back in another time machine. He then goes back to his own timeline and destroys his original android's to bring back peace to his world.

What happens next is where “Xeno” Trunks’ history diverges from “mainline” Dragonball. In the Online/Xenoverse/Heroes continuities, Trunks messing around with time causes him to attract the attention of the Supreme Kai of time Chronoa. She then explains to him that altering the timeline is a sin, and as a result coerces him into joining a police force called the time patrol. Trunks' job is essentially to travel through time preventing people from using time travel for evil purposes. Something he does mainly by watching over the “scrolls of eternity” which record time and become corrupted/split when a timeline split occurs. Then traveling back in time to correct the change.


The exact time Trunks joins time patrol isn’t clear, but it’s typically implied to be right after the Cell Saga. Though Xenoverse 2 implies Xeno Trunks lived through the events of the Black saga as well. Either way it’s explicitly stated in the Heroes anime that Xeno Trunks is an alternate timeline version to the current Black Saga Future Trunks.


Anyway the most recurring villains for the time patrollers are Mira and Towa, two demons from the demon realm. They aim to travel through time while siphoning energy from powerful fighters, so they can use that energy to revive their ruler Mechikabura and undo a seal restricting access to the demon realm. After their eventual defeat Towa’s son Fu becomes a major antagonist to time patrol.


The series secondary villain of the series is Demigra, a Supreme Kai of time candidate who was sealed away by Chronoa because he tried to forcibly take over the position.


Arsenal

Brave Sword

A double edged sword Trunks uses in many of his appearances. For Xeno Trunks it's specified that it was the sword originally used by the legendary Hero Tapion. .It can easily cut through tough opponents like Freeza.

Key Sword

The Key sword is a divine weapon used for slaying gods. It grants protection against dark magic and can nullify healing factors. It can also seal away foes in a location outside of time using an ability called eternal labyrinth. As well as nullify powers granted by the dragonballs, such as Mechikabura’s dragonball induced eternal youth. Some other abilities it has includes suppressing magical barriers, binding foes with chains, creating energy beams, absorbing energy and forming duplicates of itself. The sword can move on its own accord and even travel across space/time to its owner.

It can also  awaken to a more powerful form after absorbing energy from the Kai of time Chronoa, the demon god Demigra and the god bird Toki Toki. It should logically have some of their abilities as a result.

General dark magic used by characters in the series the key sword should protect against.


Demonic magic 

Given the key sword was infused with demonic magic by Demigra, it likely has some powers associated with the demonic characters. Some examples are that


Chronoa

The key sword should likely have many of Crhonoa’s ability, due to it absorbing her power.

  • GMT 5:46 Crona teleports herself across time periods by 75 million years

  • GMT 5:57 Crona apparently runs into her past self, showing Xeno characters can exist at the same time as their past selves.


Toki Toki

As the key sword has some of Toki Toki’s powers, it likely has several of his abilities.



Time travel devices

Scrolls of eternity

A scroll that records the history of dragonball. Time patrollers can use them to identify alterations in history and then travel to those locations in time/space.


Time machines

The original method of time travel in Dragonball. They’re typically car sized vehicles that travel through space/time. In the Xenoverse media they’re only really used to travel to specific timelines that are difficult to reach, such as those in the side quest “parallax quests”.


Crack in time

Crystal-like objects that can be used to travel to different eras. They can also be used as a device to communicate across space/time.


Time travel armbands

Armband-like devices that can open wormholes to travel to different locations in space/time.

  • BBM ep 1 1:46 Time patrollers seem to have armband devices they can use to travel through time


 Hero switch

A wrist list device that allows people to use abilities from the Dragon Ball Heroes game in the real world. The device was initially created by the scientist Leggings. It can also alter the appearance of the user, which Trunks uses to take on the form of a hero called the great Saiyaman 3. This costume has its own exclusive sword.

Summoning


Notable Card abilities

  • Shield break: Allows the user to pierce an enemies defenses

  • Unbearable battle unit: Increases energy output 

  • Power damage ineffective unit: Nullifies damage from a single attack

  • Health capsule: Restores HP

  • HP Conversion Unit: Increases power based on current HP

  • Damage Boost Unit: Increases power

  • Ability surprise: Allows you to disable the guard and damage reduction effects of an opponent

  • Ability sun action war: Can halve energy for the opponent

  • Ability brave warrior: Increases power when attacking a more powerful unit

  • Super slash of destruction: Can reduce an opponent's energy if perfectly executed

  • Trunks also has misc card abilities that debuff foe stats or increase his accuracy

  • Dimensional domain: Decreases the stamina of nearby enemies


Abilities


Ki

A form of metaphysical life energy that exists within all living things. Humanoids and other sapient creatures can harness it to increase their physical strength and durability. As well as channel it for various energy attacks. A large enough outburst of ki can affect the environment, manipulating clouds and causing earthquakes.

It’s mentioned Ki control is needed to increase physical power


God Ki

A specialized version of Ki typically utilized by deities. God Ki is more potent than normal ki and normally can’t be sensed by non deities. Trunks first learned how to utilize God Ki after performing the Super Saiyan God ritual, but has since learned to tap into that on his own.

Sensing God Ki

  • Battle of Gods 19:54 Goku mentions he can’t sense Beerus’s presence and King kai explains that it's because you can’t sense the presence of deities


Regeneration

God Ki can also be used to regenerate minor or major wounds, such as impalation.

  • DBS ep 11 17:56,20:00 Goku gets punched through the chest. He falls through orit and into the ocean.His god power regenerates the wound however.


Note in the Heroes/Xenoverse timeline those with God ki are more resistant to dark magic

Flight

The ability to manipulate ki to fly or lift oneself into the air. The technique was initially introduced into the series by the crane hermit students Tien and Chaitsu. 


Ki blasts

The ability to create small explosive bullets of Ki as a projectile attack.

Ki Sense

The ability to sense the life essence and aura of other living beings.


Masenko

A demonic energy beam technique taught to Gohan by Piccolo, and passed down to Trunks in the future timeline.

Buster cannon

An original  beam energy attack. Creates a large laser.

  • DBZ ep 134 9:33 Trunks blows up a small mountain with a buster cannon


Burning attack

An energy ball attack first used against Freeza. The move involves complex hand movements before shooting a sphere.


Finish buster/Heat dome

The attack used  to kill future imperfect Cell. Trunks flings an opponent into the air above himself and then creates a massive beam of energy straight upward to incinerate them.

Sword techniques

Shining sword attack

A rapid sword cutting move that cuts an opponent to pieces.


Sword  blast

Technically not canon, but in many of the games Trunks can create Ki based sword beams. It seems reasonable for him to be able to do this in cannon as well.



DBS abilities

It’s heavily implied, albeit not outright stated that the version of Xeno Trunks in the Xenoverse game series did live through the events of the Goku Black saga.


That said, several of the abilities Trunks showcased in the Black saga were due to him being an apprentice to the supreme kai Shin. Such as him having laten healing abilities and his own variation of the spirit bomb. Given Trunks is still technically a Supreme Kai apprentice in the Xenoverse series and associated media, he should be able to perform the same abilities.


Healing

The ability to heal people. This move was inherited by Trunks due to becoming an apprentice of the supreme kai in the Super timeline. The same should apply to Xeno Trunks.


Spirit  bomb/sword of hope

A special attack originally taught to Goku by King Kai. It allows him to gather life energy from surrounding organisms and planets, then form it into a power ball projectile. Trunks somehow learned to gather energy like this unconsciously in the Super timeline and can absorb the resulting spirit bomb to make a super powerful energy blade. This was likely due to him becoming a supreme Kai apprentice, meaning it applies to Xeno Trunks.

  • DBS ep 66 18:54 Trunks creates a large spirit bomb unconsciously from life on earth and absorbs its power. This creates a larger blue energy sword and gives him a Blue tinted Aura.


Note this move can draw energy from across timelines, assuming Trunks is in a place that can easily access them.


Transformations


Super saiyan

A legendary transformation of the Saiyan race that had been forgotten about for centuries until Goku rediscovered it.Official guide books state this form is a 50x power boost, though other multipliers higher and lower have been suggested by other media or Akira himself. Because this form has emotional turmoil as its trigger, the form tends to increase aggression. Trunks gained the form after seeing his mentor Gohan get killed by the androids.


Second  grade

A more powerful variant of the original SS form, that forcibly increases muscle mass to improve strength and speed.


Third grade

A varent that springs from the second grade variant. It further increases muscle mass for added power, but heavily lowers speed, making the form a powerhouse but ineffective in combat.


Super saiyan  2

The true successor to the initial Super Saiyan form. It is characterized by electrical sparks and increased aggressiveness over the normal SS form. Guides imply it's about 2x stronger than the normal SS form.


Super saiyan 3

The successor to the SS 2 transformation. It’s characterized by increased hair growth and according to guides is 4x stronger than a SS2. The form is not very energy conservative and is difficult for Goku to maintain with a normal human body in the human realm. 


Super Saiyan God

Another legendary transformation that utilizes god ki to power up a saiyan beyond the confines of SS3. It was originally obtained by performing a “ritual” where 5 pure hearted saiyans would pour their energy into a 6th. It initially could also only be utilized for a short period of time. Trunks learned to tap into this form on his own with no restraints.

Scaling

General

Trunks is portrayed as being on a similar level of power as mainline versions of SSB Goku, or SS4 Xeno Goku who’s even stronger. This means he scales to any feats from the Freeza and Beerus arcs in mainline Dragon Ball.

  • DBS ep 12 5:51-6:04 Goku and Beerus perform a physical clash that releases a shock wave that travels over earth and to the Kai realm in seconds#speed feat 

    • DBS ep 12 9:06,9:19 Goku and Beerus create more impact waves. The also move in tandem with them when produced


Toki Toki

A divine bird who’s responsible for the creation of timelines and the flow of time. It’s stated that the eggs he lays contain time for entire universes and that he’s responsible for maintaining time for the entire multiverse. His power is absorbed or stolen by numerous villains in the Xenoverse games. Likewise his power helped power up the key sword. Allowing Trunks to him.


Demigra

Demigra is a recurring villain in Xenoverse, Heroes, ect. He’s generally portrayed as a former Kai of time candidate that Chronoa sealed away and desires revenge against the cast because of it. In Xenoverse he absorbs Toki Toki, and plans to recreate all timelines after erasing history. Cast members like Xeno Trunks, Super Goku and the playable avatar in Xenoverse fight him in this state. 


Future Warrior 1 and 2

The Future warriors are the player avatars of Xenoverse 1 and 2. As the player avatars they naturally fight pretty much everyone, including characters like Beerus. Trunks specifically aids in fighting the future warrior from Xenoverse 1, who has a feat of nearly destroying the Crack in time. A dimension outside of space time connected to many other timelines.


Mechikabura

The emperor of the demon realm and one of the entities Mira/Towa are always trying to revive. After regaining his youth from the dragonballs and getting to his highest level of power, he’s able to absorb all space time. Trunks is able to defeat him using the power of the key sword.


Beat

The main player character in the DBH game adaptations. Xeno Trunks fights alongside him and trains him and World Mission. In Ultimate mission X they fight Chamel, whose power was going to collapse the DBH game and real world multiverses.
