Story

Mega Man

Mega Man was once known as Rock (or Mega in the Powered Up Version). He was created alongside Roll after Dr. Light's first robot, Blues (Proto Man), ran away fearing the Doctor would reprogram him. Rock was originally a Lab Assistant to the Doctor until Dr. Wily stole the original Robot Masters. Fearing what Wily would do with the Robot Masters, he volunteered to become a Super Fighting Robot. And one upgrade later, Mega Man was born.

Astro Boy

Dr. Tenma once had a son named Toby. Due to a car accident/running away/vaporization, Toby was lost forever. But Dr. Tenma couldn't accept that, so he created a robot duplicate of him complete with all the memories of Toby. It filled his void for a while but eventually he realized the robot could not replace his son. This caused him to abandon his creation. Eventually, Professor Ochanomizu found the little robot and took him in. And thus begin the story of Astro Boy.

Body

Mega Man

Mega Man's body armor is made out of a unique, flexible ceramic titanium alloy. This version can bend under severe impact and retain its shape instead of breaking or shattering. He is solar powered, with a solar-pile reactor within him so he can work at nights. In his legs are suspensions and below his feet are air pressure pumps. With these, he can jump higher and land safely on his feet even from high distances. He also has magnetic joints which I don't think really does anything specific.

Astro Boy

I can not seem to find out what Astro Boy is made of, but in the 2003 movie he is powered by a Blue Core which seems to have no limit beyond "do not touch red core". He even then has enough energy to revive dead robots and they can use said energy to revive a dead Blue Core without depowering themselves. And in the original series, he is on record to have 100,000 horsepower.

Weapons

Mega Man

Mega Man has two main things: his Mega Buster and his Variable Weapon System.

The Mega Buster is an ambidextrous arm cannon created by Dr. Light. It can fire bullets of highly compressed solar energy. He can also charge up energy to release a more powerful blast at his opponent. It can puncture steel and destroy boulders. A single, uncharged "Solar Bullet" can blow a five foot diameter hole in a wall of solid stone.

Don't worry if one Mega Buster fails, he actually has two Mega Busters (one for each arm). While Mega prefers to use one, when he is in need of more power, he can use both at the same time. But if he uses this specific version's charge shot too much, it will drain him faster than he can replenish his energy reserves. It even will cause him to overheat.

Though this weapon does have its weaknesses: if you manage to find one specific chip, you can disable the buster from being able to shoot. And while it is powerful, it won't be able to be used when using another Weapon System.

Mega Man also carries with him E-Tanks and W-Tanks. Drinking these will refill his energy reserves for himself and his special weapons. The S-Tank can do the job of both. Though his most useful, yet controversial for this match, is his Support Units. These Robots help Mega Man in various ways.

Eddie is an item transportation robot that will give Mega Man various items. He is also capable of shooting out bombs from his containment unit. Tango is a Robotic Cat that can help Mega Man attack enemies. Beat is a Robotic Bird that can either help Mega Man attack robots or save him when he is falling from high places.

His most useful one, and the one that would make sense for him to use, is Rush. Rush is a Robotic Dog that assists Mega Man in his adventures. Unlike the others, he assists differently. With the Rush Coil, he allows Mega Man to jump higher. With the Rush Jet, he allows Mega Man to fly in the sky at high speeds. He even turns into a Submarine or a Motorcycle if Mega Man needs it.

But when he becomes armor for Mega Man, he becomes the Super Adaptor. This combines the previous Jet and Power adaptors together and gives Mega Man the ability to fly and a more powerful punch.

Astro Boy

Astro Boy is more than just the robotic duplicate of a dead son. Connected to his feet and arms are Rocket Jets. With just his feet, he can travel at very high speeds. This doubles when he uses his arms, but leaves him with less weaponry. Astro Boy also have Laser Fingers and Laser Cannons. With his fingers, he can fire small and fast energy shots or even small beams. The Laser Cannon does the beam, but much larger.

And for some reason, near his but he can fire either machine guns or more lasers. This is referred to as the Rear Guns despite not really coming from the butt.

Abilities/Powers

Mega Man

The Variable Weapon System is the big hook of Mega Man. With this, he has the ability to take information found within other robots' data chips, and emulate their special abilities. However, the weapons are not exactly like the originals as Mega Man is not properly designed to do the same things the robots were specifically made to do.

One touch from a defeated Robot Master is enough to get him to copy it. But when he uses said Special Weapon, his Mega Buster is disabled. Weapon Data is not the only thing he can copy, as he can copy other sort of informational data from his enemies. While he usually likes to limit himself to at most eight, he could in theory have an unlimited amount of weapon data within him.

There are a lot of weapons, but they all fall under a specific category (some even fall under multiple categories):

Air Weapons: These weapons specifically shoot air. While some just simply shoot air (like Air Shooter from MM2), others have handy side effects that could help out Mega Man. One such weapon is the Tornado Hold from MM8. This drops a fan on the ground that creates a tornado. Anyone caught in that tornado would be trapped except Mega Man who can use its wind to levitate to higher areas. It can also be used as a barrier against projectiles.

Barricade-breaking Weapons: These weapons can destroy barricades that gets in Mega Man's way. One example is the Break Dash from MMV. This will cause Mega Man to dash forward with a burst of speed, damaging anyone in his way. He can also charge it so it can go for longer periods of time. What makes this power special over other physical attacks is that Mega Man is invulnerable while using this weapon, even for a short time after using it.

Chargeable Weapons: These weapons can be charged into more powerful shots. While the Mega Buster is the more well known version, there are others. One example is the Pharaoh Shot, which creates a large fireball above Mega Man's head. It can be used like a bug zapper and hurt anyone stupid enough to get near it or be thrown to plow through enemies.

Cutter Weapons: Your typical bladed weapon like swords and saws goes here. The most popular one is Metal Blade. This allows Mega Man to create Razor Sharp Blades made of Ceratanium. Said metal is lightweight and sturdy material that is much more durable than standard titanium.

Earth Weapons: Using Earth or objects found on Earth, these can be used for offense, defense, or giving Mega Man access to places he wouldn't be able to. The Super Arm is one such weapon, which gives Mega Man the strength to rip chunks of the Earth to use against his enemies. In other medias, he uses the strength of the Super Arm to increase his physical attack, allowing him to make stronger punches or rip open a new entrance.

Electric Weapons: These weapons use electricity to deliver their attacks. The best one is the Thunder Beam, which can not only shoot an electric beam forward, but also one straight up and down. With this, he can hit three targets at once.

Explosive Weapons: These are the weapons that go boom. One of the most powerful are the Crash Bombs. They attach to their target and after a while they explode. These things are so powerful, they are the only thing that could destroy a machine that no other Mega Man weapon could get through.

Fire Weapons: Weapons that are all about Fire. One such weapon is the Magma Bazooka. With this, Mega Man fires three compressed balls of magma in three directions at once. Even worse, this can be charged.

Homing Missile Weapons‎: These are missile with one goal: to search and destroy. The Homing Sniper is one such weapon. It fires a missile at a straight line, but once it is near an enemy, it will lock and follow it till it hits. And its chargeable to fire several missiles at once, all homing.

Ice Weapons: These are weapons that shoot ice or do ice related things. The Chill Spike is one such weapon that fires a special liquid that freezes on contact to become very sharp spikes. When hitting an enemy, there is a high chance they could be frozen and immobilized.

Light/Laser Weapons: Using the power of light, these weapons can be flashy or fast. The fastest of them is the Laser Trident. This weapon shoots faster than the Mega Buster and can go through shielded enemies and destroy concrete.

Liquid Weapons: These weapons use various liquids to deliver attacks to their opponents. Usually water but there are others. One such thing is the Rain Flush. With this, Mega Man creates Acid Rain that can damage a lot of robots, especially ones not strong against acid. These can also take out fires and harden sand. They can even go through shields.

Nature Special Weapons: These use things that seem like natural things but really are devastating weapons. The Search Snake is a missile that looks like a snake. It can crawl across the floor and go up and down walls to find its target. And when its close, it goes boom.

Shield Weapons: These are weapons that circle Mega Man in a shield or barrier. Some can be fired off as well. The Jewel Satellite is one of these things. These protect Mega Man from many shots fired, able to reflect them back towards the opponent. They can also plow through weak enemies and be fired forward.

Splitting Weapons: These weapons split into two or more shots when hit. The Spread Drill is one big drill missile that when activated can split up into two smaller drills. And those drills can split up into two more each. These could drill through certain blocks but in battle they can become a surprise.

Time and Space Weapons‎: Weapons that mess with Space and Time, these weapons are possibly the most powerful of them all. The Flash Stopper is one of the most powerful, as it stops almost all robots (except those immune to it) right in their tracks. While in the games he is unable to use his buster, in the comics he could. The only downside with Flash Stopper is that if the opponent is fast enough, it can still move under its effect.

Don't think Mega Man is only about power. With his Supercomputer Brain, he is able to figure out patterns of his opponents and use the right tools to defeat them.

Astro Boy

Astro Boy is super strong. His normal output is usually referred to being 100,000 horsepower, but at desperate times he can push himself beyond his limits and reach a Million. If he does this though, he would feel exhausted and no longer able to continue to fight. He can also hear a thousand times better than a human.

Astro Boy is nearly invulnerable. He is capable of taking a lot of damage, though he doesn't do well against electrical or elemental attacks. And either from an Atomic Energy source or a Blue Core, he has Infinite Energy. Meaning he can continually fire off energy attacks as long as he can generate what he lost. But if his output is more than he can produce, he can get tired.

Like Mega Man, he also has a Supercomputer Brain. This allows him to analyze the data he gathered from being in battles. And when he wants to go defensively, he has the Spin Barrier. By spinning rapidly, Astro Boy can create an energy barrier that protects him from any attack. Downside is he can't really move when using this move.

But the most interesting is his Hyper Adaptive System. This system monitors Astro's current battle status and allows Astro Boy to match his opponent's output and strength. With this, he can fight as strong as his opponent is. And with an unlimited amount of energy, the ability to outlast them.

Weaknesses

Mega Man

Mega Man's biggest weakness is Spikes. If his hull is punctured by these, he will explode. He is also more weak to electrical attacks. While Mega Man is impressive, he does rely heavily on Special Weapons and Items to help him in his battle against Wily. Without them, Mega Man can only really jump, shoot, and slide.

Speaking of weapons, Mega Man's weapons are limited. Once he runs out of Weapon Energy for said weapon, he won't be able to use them. While his Mega Buster has unlimited shots, it just doesn't pack the same punch as his Special Weapons.

Astro Boy

His Hyper Adaptive System works slowly. Once it gains steam, it makes Astro Boy tough to beat. But if the opponent is strong enough, Astro Boy can be destroyed before he can reach that potential. And like Mega Man, he is weak to electrical attacks. While he can take a good number, they can short circuit his weapons or even himself.

And while he has unlimited energy, he can only produce so much. So if he pushes himself more than he can create energy, he will become tired. And unlike Mega Man, he does not have a quick fill me up.

My Verdict

Mega Man has a lot of powers and weaponry. But the big problem with all that is that they're all limited. Eventually, he will run dry of weapon energy. And Rush is a separate entity that, if Astro Boy chooses to, can take out and reduce Mega Man's ability to move around the arena more efficiently. Without these two things, all Mega Man can do is Jump and Shoot (and slide).

Astro Boy is on par with Mega in terms of intellect and the ability to analyze their opponents. And while Mega was able to dodge Duo's attacks, he was not able to beat him. Astro Boy has superior speed and unlimited energy, meaning he can still keep going even after Mega Man uses up all his powers.

Mega Man's only saving grace is using his weapons effectively, but despite the varied number, they all fall under specific categories that Astro Boy could figure out. And what's the point of said weaponry if you can't touch your opponent. They're seemingly even on intellect, durability and even strength. But this is a marathon and Astro Boy was built for the long battles.

SS7K: Nice work. It seems that the real question is whether or not Astroboy will be able to survive Mega Man’s arsenal. There seems to be a lot of evidence that he can. Are there any notable feats for these characters? Anything demonstrating Astroboy’s ability to sustain and endure punishment? Has he ever fought anyone as versatile as Mega Man?
