SpongeBob SquarePants
Preliminary Notes
For SpongeBob SquarePants, the hit Nickelodeon animated TV show, it’s about as facetious trying to figure out an exact canon to Mario as it is for this. Therefore, there won’t be much restrictions as the main show goes for feats. Since this is a cartoon, I will be evaluating even one-off gags and feats as many cartoons often present these feats in single bits. As long as it’s not a crossover piece of media, it’s going to be applicable for research. This includes The Patrick Star Show, Kamp Koral, the animated movies, comics, and the various video games. For this episode, very little from the main show is being excluded except for the horrendous ass The Splinter episode. We can leave that out, no one will care.
It’s probably for best that this Character Sheet be supplemented by the over 100 pages of notes outlined in General SpongeBob notes. As usual, since this is a cartoon, we’ll be referencing wco.tv for footage. Notes reference timecodes in ascending numbers, you’ll find this by hovering over the playback bar.
Sources will be episode links within parentheses. It’ll be labeled as (#a/b/c, timecode). A through C being the video order from the episode listing. Look into General SpongeBob Notes for more in-depth notes on the sources.
Background
(barring any retcons from the movies or Kamp Koral)
Robert "SpongeBob" Harold SquarePants Sr. (yes that is his real name) is the most infamous resident of Bikini Bottom. Born to Harold and Margaret SquarePants, from the time SpongeBob was an embryo, he knew he wanted to make Krabby Patties (as that’s all Margaret would eat during that time). Upon being born, SpongeBob lived a relatively normal life, growing up alongside his best friend forever, Patrick Star. The two finished primary school and college before going their separate ways.
His story would have ended up like any other no-named Bikini Bottom resident until the time came for him and Gary to move. SpongeBob seeked up various homes throughout the city but none captured his attention. That was until he stumbled onto a pineapple under the sea. SpongeBob bought the house on the spot and kept its property. Fortunately, this made his next door neighbors with Patrick Star, but unfortunately also made him one for Squidward Q. Tentacles.
SpongeBob would then use this opportunity to finally seek a position at the Krusty Krab. While Mr. Krabs and Squidward were skeptical at first, his skills more than made up for it. SpongeBob became Krusty Krab’s second fry cook and its best. From there, he would meet another long time friend in the scientist Texan squirrel, Sandy Cheeks. The rest is history. SpongeBob would go on many wacky adventures with his best friends that would take him to every corner of Bikini Bottom. What happens there is far too numerous to name, but SpongeBob would save and destroy Bikini Bottom various times, only to return back to the Krusty Krab good as new.
Timeline-wise, SpongeBob’s last adventure would always be when King Neptune accuses Mr. Krabs of taking his crown (it was Plankton) and sentences him to frozen death. SpongeBob and Patrick will have to go on an adventure to Shell City above the sea level to get the crown back. After successfully thwarting Plankton’s schemes, seemingly for the final time, Mr. Krabs would open up the Krusty Krab 2, with SpongeBob as its manager. Finally, SpongeBob achieved his lifelong dream of being a leader at the Krusty Krab.

Weapons & Equipment
Standard Arsenal
Spatula - His most trusty weapon. Has one in every episode. It’s a hydrodynamic spatula with port and starboard attachments, including a turbo drive. (Translation, it can operate extremely fast and there’s two other spatulas attached to it). (1a, 4:50) SpongeBob is a master with this tool and has been using it to cook food for the Krusty Krab restaurant for decades. (88b, 2:28) It is multipurpose, being able to both flip and chop with its bladed edge. (1a, 7:39) SpongeBob also keeps a very long handle attachment with his spatula. (56b, 4:27) It is SpongeBob’s partner in crime and has its own sentience, capable of operating tasks on its own if need be. (72a, 10:55) Good for a sword (72a, 3:22), cooking, and nunchucks. (198a, 8:07) And to think there was only one of these left in stock.
Ol’ Reliable - SpongeBob has several jellyfishing nets that do exactly as one would expect, catch jellyfish. But this net is different. Its net is made of titanium alloy netting, its handle is constructed of carbon fiber, and it has a form-fitting silicon grip. (79a, 1:24) Even with a regular jellyfishing net, SpongeBob has fought off enemies of robots and caught monster behemets of jellyfish. He’s contained every (potentially millions) of jellyfish in Bikini Bottom (39a).
Bubble Wand / Bubble Blowing Kit - SpongeBob’s the best bubble blower in Bikini Bottom. While the contents of his bubble are simple soap and water, under SpongeBob’s hands it’s a dangerous weapon. Anything that SpongeBob creates with his bubbles receives the properties of the shape it turned into. Gorilla bubbles will act like gorillas (185, 19:32), bomb bubbles will act as bombs (24a, 9:36), even entire cities made of bubbles will act like an actual city (240a, 10:00). The limit of these bubbles is SpongeBob’s imagination, to which he is very creative. To this end, SpongeBob has utilized his unique bubbles in various combat situations and are his go-to weapons of choice. (185, 20:12) The durability of his bubbles vary. In most instances, it seems the surface tension is able to carry multiple people, buildings, and anything else it encompasses. (2a, 10:00) (138b, 8:00) On the other hand, it’s also been known to pop as easily as a normal bubble. Massively varies. More is detailed in the Offensive Hax section…
Karate Gear - SpongeBob’s karate gear contains a foam headpiece and two gloves for all purpose combat situations. Despite them being foam material, SpongeBob has eliminated countless with them. They are upgradable to metallic versions (to which he is capable of reflecting projectiles) and seem to offer SpongeBob more protection rather than safety during combat scenarios. Never leave home without it.
Magic Pencil
A pencil from above the sea made its way to Bikini Bottom and into SpongeBob’s possession. It’s an actual pencil but it has shown multiple times throughout the series and side material for SpongeBob ever since. It’s a pencil with reality writing capabilities. (34b, 1:43) Anything that the pencil draws becomes actualized in real life. They become real figures that retain the property of the thing it’s drawn, much like its bubbles. (229a, 6:58) SpongeBob has kept the pencil in his body (229a, 4:14) and keeps one in his shoe. (229a, 10:03) Old Man Jenkins seems to possess the magical pencil for some reason. (Who R Zoo)
The full pencil has an eraser. With it, it can erase any type of matter out of existence. It is not limited to just drawings. This is about the only thing in SpongeBob that had incapitated him and forced him to redraw his body in order to regenerate. (as opposed to just doing it offscreen or as a gag) If someone is erased, it’s very unlikely that they’ll be able to regenerate from it. (34b, 9:17) The pencil’s main weakness is the same as any pencil. It cannot write without lead and if it’s broken, then that’s it. Pencil constructs are also rendered back into simple drawings if they come in contact with paper. (34b, 10:21)
Krabby Patties
One of SpongeBob’s more versatile and deadly things in his arsenal. SpongeBob has frequently shown the ability to make Krabby Patties no matter the situation he’s involved in. (94b, 8:54) No matter what he’s doing, SpongeBob will always seem to have a Krabby Patty (221b, 18:50). These sandwiches are imbued with the Krabby Patty Secret Formula, the most well kept secret of Bikini Bottom. It’s basically Bikini Bottom’s version of crack. It’s one of the main reasons people return to the Krusty Krab despite its poor conditions and unfriendly staff (Squidward). SpongeBob is privy to the secret formula and aids in keeping it a mystery. Krabby Patties have several abilities including:
Mind Control Nullification - Digesting a Krabby Patty (or it hitting your stomach acid) completely removes any instances of mind control. (94b, 10:23)
Pacification - Even the most hardened, stone faced people are brought to singing and dancing whenever they eat a Krabby Patty. (100a, 9:41)
Revitalization - There have been numerous instances of a Krabby Patty reviving and healing people. It’s used as a health indicator in “The Spongebob Movie: The Game” (140b, 7:17)
Self-Destruction - After a while, Mr. Krabs added a feature to the secret formula that could induce an explosion after it had been taken 10 feet from the Krusty Krab. (153b, 0:50)
Toxin and Transmutation Nullification - Nullifies poison caused by Plankton’s chum. Even if it’s life threatening. (179b, 3:45)
One-Off Equipment
Field Guide - An encyclopedia that details every land creature in it. (Tea at the Treedome)
Rock - SpongeBob’s rock that he ends up driving. (Pizza Delivery)
Net Gun - A gun that shoots out a net to ensnare others (Sandy’s Rocket)
Brick of Lead - SpongeBob keeps a brick of lead under his hat. (Employee of the Month)
Reef Blower - Honestly, not one-off as it shows up a few times, but it’s just a VERY powerful vacuum cleaner without much else to note about it.
Umbrella - It’s an umbrella. (Pressure)
Magic Conch Shell - An underwater sea shell with precognitive powers, guiding SpongeBob with simple answers on what to do. (Club SpongeBob)
Mermaid Man’s Belt - Only possesses a couple of times, non-standard. It has all of Mermaid Man’s power though Spongebob only knew how to shrink people with it. (Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV)
Book of Records - SpongeBob’s personal log of record keeping… for himself. (Party Pooper Pants)
Pickaxe - It’s a pickaxe. (Party Pooper Pants)
Spiky Cleats - SpongeBob has cleats with painful spikes beneath that cause intense stabbing pain. (SpongeBob Meets the Strangler)
High-powered Binoculars - Yep. Sure is. (The Pink Purloiner)
Jetpack - It’s a jetpack. It does jetpack things. (Spy Buddies)
Knockout Ray - It’s a ray that knocks people unconscious. (Spy Buddies)
Nose Camera - A camera that you can fit in your nose, don’t see the point though. (Spy Buddies)
Mustard - Krusty Krab mustard can melt eyes off of others. (Stuck in the Wringer)
Extra Strength Soap - Greater power and grade of bubbles than the standard ones. Even these bubbles Patrick can’t break. (Who R Zoo)
Magic Wand - A magic kit that SpongeBob can use to transmute others. (Hocus Pocus)
Magical Book - A book where anything that is written in it comes true. It is a form of reality warping that SpongeBob has very briefly. (Sponge Out of Water movie)
Alternate Forms
Invincibubble - Super Hero Alter-Ego that appears in “Sponge Out of Water.” This form was achieved by writing in the magical book, which reforms reality based on its text. There’s nothing notable besides a statistical increase and design change. SpongeBob is also able to fully breathe outside of water without any restraint.
Goofy Goober Rock - SpongeBob harnesses the Power of Rock and Roll. As his persona as the Goofy Goober Rocker, SpongeBob gets a new metal look alongside a guitar that can shoot lasers. He is completely immune to Plankton’s mind control in this form and his lasers can counteract it. (He can’t actually fly) These lasers are also able to travel through radio waves all across Bikini Bottom. In “The Spongebob Movie: The Game”, it can go toe-to-toe with Bikini Bottom’s King Neptune, the God of the Sea.
Powers & Abilities
Offensive Hax
TV Show / Movies
Sponge Body - SpongeBob’s main ability. Despite being a sea sponge, his body acts akin to an actual kitchen sponge (130b, 8:25). He does NOT have blood, but has internal organs.
Absorption - He’s able to absorb (114a, 10:43), collesque (131a, 8:29), manipulate (5b, 6:10), or alter liquids he comes in contact with. These can be shot / spat out or changed in any way he sees fit. It’s not only limited to liquids, as he’s able to slice up and completely change any object that goes inside of his body (148a, 0:30).
Elasticity - Much like Monkey D. Luffy, SpongeBob’s body is rubbery in nature. It can stretch (7a, 3:49), bend (11a, 0:22), twist (148b, 1:30), and grow however he pleases. He often uses this for gags (79b, 5:48), but it can be used to enhance the strength of his attacks, provide him with more techniques (144b, 2:20), and help him and friends in a jam (156, 13:08). SpongeBob traverses the seas by stretching out his limbs to perform acrobatic feats.
Shapeshifting - Because of the above two abilities, Spongebob can change his body into literally anything he wants. While his spongy texture and colors don’t change, the shape of his body provides SpongeBob with extra utility. This includes, but not limited to, mimicry (207a, 3:01) or fitting into tight cracks. (73b, 6:46)
Duplication - A master of this. Any part of his body that breaks off can become a new SpongeBob (228a, 2:19). He’s shown the ability to make realistic clones of himself without breaking his body a part (12a, 10:50). Each clone acts as its own SpongeBob. It does not matter what happens to the original. (26b, 0:40) This can happen indefinitely and there has not been a known limit.
Flight - SpongeBob has the ability to fly. How it’s done varies from episode to episode. He can inflate his pants (59, 13:25), use bubbles (68a, 8:06), the aid of a slide whistle (105b, 2:03), swimming through the sea(?) air, turning into a rocket, or just without any of this (240b, 9:50).
Mind Manipulation - Though miniscule in offensive capability, SpongeBob has shown that he’s in control of his mind and can use several forms of mental attacks / abilities.
Telepathy - SpongeBob has the uncanny ability to read people’s thoughts.
Mental Images - Able to transmit thoughts into other people’s brains.
Invasive Dreams - While asleep, SpongeBob’s mind can invade and alter the dreams of other people that are sleeping.
Teleportation - Instant teleportation throughout the series (71a, 4:58), (79b, 0:59), (105b, 1:46), (165a, 1:42). He can even ride the bubbles from the scene transitions. (78a, 1:28)
Fire Manipulation - Conjured up fire to create Pretty Patties? (25b, 2:54)
Sound Manipulation - His bubbles can trap loud sounds. (2a, 4:30)
Sea Creature Calling - SpongeBob can summon the creatures of the sea with a sonic screech. (Who R Zoo)
Rock Manipulation - Capable of driving rocks. (5a, 8:59)
Rainbow Creation - Exactly what it says, he can create rainbows. (27b, 2:28) (44b, 1:40)
Super Crying - For some reason, SpongeBob’s tears are very potent and has flooded Bikini Bottom several times over. (65b, 8:08) (136a, 10:06)
Gravity Manipulation - Whether in deep space or under the sea, SpongeBob and other objects are removed from laws of physics (1c, 14:30), (5b, 3:45), (12b, 1:57 & 3:49)
Sand Manipulation - Able to create life and military-grade weaponry from sand.
Bubble Manipulation - One of his most potent abilities. With his lung capacity, SpongeBob’s bubbles take on new properties. They can trap (2a, 10:00) anything they come in contact with. Even out of hot sauce. These bubbles can literally be ANYTHING he wants them to be. SpongeBob can bestow life onto his own bubble creations. (Bubble Buddy) .. see more in Standard Arsenal…
Non Corporeal Interaction - Able to interact, summon, and harm ghosts. (70b, 0:25) (162, 3:50) ()
Imagination - SpongeBob’s power of thought becomes real actualized warps in reality. (223b, 15:50)
Hammer Space - SpongeBob’s pants has a ton of items he can pull out of nowhere.
Toon Force - This is the catchall term for cartoons that have feats based on the fact that it’s funny. Anything can happen to SpongeBob or his friends and they will be fine. This means that nothing has ever had long term repercussions to SpongeBob’s body (with a few notable exceptions). He can do what he needs for the story. This would also explain SpongeBob’s supernatural luck to get out of any situation without long-term repercussions. There needs to be a punchline and a return to status quo at the end.
Video Games
Acrobatics - SpongeBob can double jump, wall jump, helicopter hover, and perform evasive dodges from enemy attack. Notable across every SpongeBob game.
Projectile Reflection - With the Macho Karate Spin from “The SpongeBob Movie: The Game”, SpongeBob’s karate gear turns metallic and is capable of reflecting all manner of projectiles back to enemies.
Sandwich Driving - While incapable of driving a normal boatmobile, SpongeBob is perfectly fine driving a sandwich car (more in Weapons & Equipment Section).
Rolling Ball - SpongeBob morphs himself into a ball and can roll around like Samus.
Bowling Ball Creation - While in “Battle for Bikini Bottom”, Spongebob rolls bubbles to destroy crates and enemies, in the movie’s video game adaptation, they become actual bowling balls.
Cruise Bubble - Similar to the Sonic Wave. It’s a controllable bubble missile that hones onto targets and obliterates them. Utilized in “Battle for Bikini Bottom”
Sonic Wave - Similar to Cruise Bubble. SpongeBob uses an amplifier and guitar to send a wave of energy / music that hones onto targets and obliterates them. Utilized in “The SpongeBob Movie: The Game.”
Invincibility - After filling a super meter (gameplay arbitrary), SpongeBob becomes invincibile to all manner of attacks for a brief period of time. Featured in “Plankton’s Robotic Revenge”
Dumbbell / Muscle Manipulation - Present in “ Spongebob’s Truth or Square”, after obtaining a dumbbell (arbitrary gameplay), SpongeBob buffs his muscles up and greatly increases his strength.
Krabby Patty Manipulation - In “SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis” for Nintendo Wii, SpongeBob is able to conjure up whole Krabby Patties which have their own unique effects (see Weapons & Equipment for details). This is true also in the TV Show.
Comic Books
DNA Fusion - When Spongebob hugs someone hard enough, it’s possible that their biological chemistry melds together in a sickened monster.
4th Wall Awareness / Interaction - SpongeBob has left his comic book spread before and is aware of his status as a cartoon character. Therefore, he’s able to manipulate the plot about himself if he is present within that story.
Bird Communication - SpongeBob is able to speak bird.
Defensive Resistances
TV Show / Movies / Video Games / Comic Book
Regeneration - There’s about a few instances of regeneration every other SpongeBob SquarePants episode. Although SpongeBob’s body lacks any blood, his organs are near impervious to permanent harm. He can detach, grow, repair, multiply, and even remove several limbs, organs, or entire bodies with ease. (See Regeneration Section) It’s hard to say if SpongeBob could be killed at all through physical means. He’s virtually bounced back from everything. There is no source or caveat to this, it just happens.
Physical Vaporization - SpongeBob has been nuked and came back. (33b, 1:12)
Self Sustenance - SpongeBob can live in the vacuum of space. (123, 18:36) (161, 9:52)
Soul Resistance - SpongeBob’s body can act without a soul. (162, 8:10) (88a, 7:16)
Existence Erasure - SpongeBob was removed via the string that bound together the universe and laughed. (241b, 5:36)
Molecular Distortion Resistance - SpongeBob survived being in proximity of a molecular distortion which blew up in his face. (90c, 3:32)
Acausality - SpongeBob exists in multiple timelines (a seemingly infinite amount of them) and each SpongeBob is unaltered by their past or future selves. (135a, 12:40) Multiple alternate universes of SpongeBob also act on this logic too.
Undead Consciousness - Even when transformed into a ghost, SpongeBob can act mostly equivalent to his alive self. He does have problems interacting with normal everyday objects.
Transmutation Resistance - SpongeBob has been transformed into different beings, objects, and states of matter only to return from it good as new (either overtime or instantly). (13b, 10:35) (76b, 10:28)
Electricity Resistance - While not immune, SpongeBob has survived a ludicrous amount of electrical discharge throughout his body. This includes jellyfish stings, lightning, or electrical fences. Considering he’s underwater, this is very impressive. (3a, 1:40) (87b, 10:03)
Fire Resistance - SpongeBob has put out fires and been set on fire. (65b, 5:48)
Sound Resistance - Perfectly fine after being in close proximity of a song that deteriorated everything it came in contact with (even the band that played it). (89b, 5:45 & 8:18)
Mind Control Resistance - SpongeBob has had his body controlled with his mind relatively intact. (3b, 6:10) Some of SpongeBob’s arsenal (like Krabby Patties) or forms (such as his Goofy Goober Rock form) can null mind control altogether. (see respective abilities)
Cartoon / Drawing Erasure - DoodleBob erases SpongeBob and he was still able to operate with a single eye, a fraction of his body, a leg, and an arm. Though he was only able to return by drawing himself back. A potential weakness?

Weaknesses
Gullibility: SpongeBob's gullible personality makes him prone to manipulation of others who use him for their gain or make him unknowingly hurt others, physically and emotionally.
Cowardice: SpongeBob often lacks the willpower to stand up for himself. Even his arch-nemesis Plankton points this out in "Walking Small" when beachgoers were walking all over SpongeBob (ironically enough, Plankton himself was forcing SpongeBob to do his bidding in the same episode). Patrick even takes advantage of SpongeBob in "Suds," "Hooky," and "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve." He's also shown to have numerous irrational fears such as the fear of clowns or the dark.
Driving (boatmobile): He is not good at driving because he always crashes into buildings and/or hits people with his boat.
Lack of Moisture: SpongeBob operates very poorly without any moisture. It could be said that despite his insane regeneration that if he’s completely dry of all liquids (water vapor, sea water, etc.) then that’s it for the sponge. Given his regeneration options, this has only been an issue in the first movie. But given that even lava has been a threat to characters like Squidward and the SpongeBob cast in video games, there may be a cadence to this theory.
Nice Feats Ultraguy.
