Character Analysis: Akuma(Feat AkumaTh)

History

  • There are two different stories for Akuma’s Origin.

    • The Wiki states that Goutetsu taught both Akuma and Gouken the Ansatsuken, with Gouken leaving because he did not embrace the Satsui no Hado like Goutetsu does. Akuma though abandoned Goutetsu’s enlightenment path to embrace the Satsui no Hado more than his teacher ever did, killing him. His teacher died proud of Akuma surpassing him. The beads he wears are of Goutetsu. It doesn’t have a source but I suspect it's from All About Street Fighter ZERO

    • Numerous other interpretations say Goutetsu wanted to persuade him away from the Darkness only for Akuma to fully embrace it. 

  • Akuma would find his brother Gouken and challenge him to a fight only to lose. He would return years later, stronger and eventually killing his brother (for now). He searched the planet for a worthy opponent, finding Gen but sad that he’s basically a dead man walking. He then realizes Ryu has the potential to wield the Satsui No Hado, so he lures Ryu to his island to test him. Ryu impressed him and told him to face him after he embraced the Dark Hado, showcasing the power to him. Ryu doesn’t to Akuma’s dismay. He then fought Gouken for the rights to Ryu.



The ability to improve yourself is usually seen as admirable. But such ambition and desire can lead you down a darker path. If you are not careful a Surge of Killing Intent could lead you down a path with no possible exit. This is the power of the Satsui No Hado. It is this power that Goutetsu has taught to two brothers: Gouken and Gouki, better known as Akuma. While Goutetsu uses the Satsui No Hado infrequently, he still uses it as he believes it will lead to a path to enlightenment. Gouken, not enjoying the violent aspects of the Ansatsuken, decides to leave his teacher to open his own Dojo to teach a less violent version of the fighting style.


Gouki, or Akuma in America, took a different path compared to his teacher or his brother. Instead of simply using it, Akuma decided to embrace the principles of the Satsui No Hado and began a path of the Dark Hado. In this path a lust for death awakens in Akuma, seeking challenges against opponents who could possibly kill him and defeating them. With this new philosophy, he fought his former teacher to the death and claimed victory. Goutetsu was proud to see his student surpass him, even though it resulted in his death. And taking his old master’s beads, Akuma declared himself the True Master of the Satsui No Hado Style of fighting.


Despite this darker path, Akuma only kills under certain conditions. If his victim is not honorable, like M. Bison, he will not hesitate to kill them. If his opponent is worthy enough for Akuma to fight in full, like his old master or his brother, he will not hesitate to kill and expect the same from his opponent. If the opponent is not worthy to fight him (Sean, Ken, Adon, etc) or is at a disadvantage (Gen with his Leukemia), Akuma will not kill them. He hopes Ryu will embrace the Satsui No Hado and become the challenge he seeks.


Despite Akuma’s appearances, he has yet to fully succumb to the Satsui No Hado. But if he does, he becomes Oni. As Oni, anything of Akuma is gone as the Surge of Killing Intent extends to anyone in his path regardless if they’re a seasoned fighter or a bystander. While the form is not canon, implications from other appearances suggest it makes him as powerful as the most powerful deities and demons in Capcom’s legacy.
