Character Analysis: Madara Uchiha(Feat Grand)

Background

Several decades prior to the start of the series, Madara Uchiha was born during the Warring States Period. He was the eldest of five brothers and son of Tajima of the famous Uchiha Clan. During this period of time before the creation of the Hidden Villages, there were many smaller countries that would hire ninja clans as mercenaries to wage war on their neighbours, and the Uchiha were among the best of the best, no doubt in thanks to their special Sharingan eyes which granted them powerful perceptive and illusionary abilities. Their power was only rivaled by the Senju Clan, and what a rivalry it was, for should any country hire one of these clans for their wars, it was expected the other side would hire the other. With war following the clan anywhere they go, Madara and his brothers were made to join their shinobi ranks at a young age, with Madara in particular excelling thanks to his prodigious talent for combat even among Uchiha standards and awakening his Sharingan at an early age, but three of his brothers were not so fortunate and were killed in battle, leaving only Madara, his younger brother Izuna, and their father.

While skipping stones at a river one day, Madara met a boy named Hashirama, and the two forged a secret friendship/rivalry with each other, be it in stone-skipping or combat, and so they often trained with each other. While neither knew the other’s heritage, they both came from warrior clans and wished for a world where there was no more fighting, even discussing founding a village themselves someday. Unfortunately, their identities were soon revealed to be that of Uchiha and Senju, and while both boys wished to keep their friend, that was determined to be impossible if both of their families were at war. And so, Madara chose to break off his friendship with Hashirama out of loyalty to his clan and to prevent himself from feeling any remorse should they find each other at the end of their blades. As it turns out, both these boys were actually the reincarnations of Indra and Asura Otsutsuki, the founders of their respective clans whose descendents were always fated to battle each other.

As expected, the two friends-turned-enemies would face each other many, many times in the following years, from childhood, to teenagehood, to adulthood, with both even becoming the new leaders of their clan. While Madara never managed to defeat Hashirama, Hashirama was also never willing to kill his old friend, and so both were at a stalemate while their clan members continued to be killed around them. Hashirama tried using his newfound position to make peace with his old friend, but Madara refused due to Hashirama’s younger brother, Tobirama, having killed Izuna. Eventually however, they would have one “final” conflict in which Madara was soundly defeated; Hashirama extended the hand of peace once more, and finally, Madara accepted. The rivalry between Uchiha and Senju was over, and their two leaders founded the village they spoke of as children: Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves.

But as these things tend to go, peace wasn’t that simple. When Hashirama was elected as the First Hokage, Madara feared that this would lead to the Senju taking control while the Uchiha would be outcast. Around this time, Madara also learned from the Uchiha’s Stone Tablet that the Uchiha and Senju had always been destined for combat, with their attempts at peace having always been failures. Madara tried to convince his fellow clan members and Hashirama that war would be inevitable, but none would listen, so he left the village on his own volition. He would later return with the power of the Nine Tailed Fox under his command and battle Hashirama one last time… again… with their clash at the Valley of the End creating a new river, signifying the neverending conflict between Uchiha and Senju. Once and for all, Madara was soundly defeated and killed by Hashirama, and statues of the warriors were erected at this lake in honor of their conflict.

...Except! Madara survived the conflict without anyone knowing, and having eaten some of Hashirama’s flesh before his death, he sealed his wounds with his rival’s cells, allowing him to develop the Rinnegan eyes and summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The old Uchiha spent the remainder of his years cultivating Hashirama’s cells under a mountain and developing his plan for world peace: The Eye of the Moon Plan, which would cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi genjutsu on the entire world and send everyone into a neverending dream world. Unfortunately however, he didn’t have infinite time on his hands and his life was coming to an end, so he kicked things into high gear and developed a Fifth-Dimensional Galaxy Brain plan to make sure his dream came true.

Madara had his Rinnegan implanted into a boy who was descended from the Senju Clan named Nagato, and in the meantime, Madara would begin to search for someone who could carry on his will after he had passed. Using creatures he believed were harvested from Hashirama’s cells known as White Zetsu, Madara spied on the Hidden Leaf Village and came into contact with the Black Zetsu, which he believed had been created as a manifestation of his will. Eventually, a young Uchiha by the name of Obito would be caught in a battle from the Third Great Ninja War, where he had half of his body crushed by a giant boulder, was buried alive and presumed to be dead by his comrades, had it not been for the White Zetsu saving him and bringing him back to the mountain where Madara resided. Using Hashirama’s cells, Madara helped heal Obito’s destroyed body, taught him jutsu and how to use his body, but that was about the extent of his kindness. Behind the scenes, Madara had Obito’s teammate and crush, Rin Nohara, captured by Mist Ninjas and had them seal the Three-Tailed Beast within her, as well as a cursed seal that prevented her from taking her own life.

When Obito was informed of this by a White Zetsu, he burst out of the mountain and rushed to save her and his other comrade and friend, Kakashi Hatake. But upon arriving at the scene of the battle, Obito found his greatest horror: Rin impaled by Kakashi himself. Obito descended into darkness, killed all of the Mist Ninja at the scene, and returned to Madara, prepared to carry out his Eye of the Moon Plan. Providing Obito with all the knowledge and techniques he needed, Madara told Obito to take his own name and to carry out the plan in his place, before finally disconnecting from the Demonic Statue and passing away.

...EXCEPT! It was all a part of Madara’s plan that he would later be revived once again! Fifth-Dimensional Galaxy Brain plan, remember? This time, he was brought back to life by a ninja named Kabuto with the Edo Tensei kinjutsu during the Fourth Great Ninja War, which was being fought by Obito and Kabuto in hopes of capturing the final two jinchuuriki, Naruto Uzumaki and Killer B, in order to get the final Eight and Nine Tailed Beasts that would allow them to summon the Ten-Tails and unleash the Infinite Tsukuyomi. During this conflict, Obito would raise the God Tree, which produced the fruit that created chakra, and Madara would revive for real beyond just the Edo Tensei, retrieving his Rinnegan from Nagato and Obito. He would face many opponents during this war, including the current five Kage of the five countries, the new reincarnations of Asura and Indra that were Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, Kakashi Hatake, Obito upon his redemption and return to the light, and all four of the previously killed Kage, most notably his old rival Hashirama. The more things change, the more they stay the same, right? Madara would absorb the Ten Tailed Beast, become its new jinchuuriki and unleash his newfound power by casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the moon and having the God Tree capture all of its victims: his goal had been achieved!

...Buuut only for a few brief moments, and then the Black Zetsu absolutely cucked stabbed Madara in the back, forcing him to absorb the chakra of the God Tree’s victims and transform into Kaguya Otsutsuki, the mother of all chakra. Thanks to Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura Haruno, Kakashi and Obito, Kaguya was defeated and the world was saved, but during the conflict, the Ten-Tails had been extracted from Madara’s body and left his life beyond saving. One last time, Madara and Hashirama discussed their dreams of a world of peace, and realizing once and for all that he had been wrong, Madara finally makes true amends with Hashirama. The two would become friends once more at the end of both their lives before passing on to the next world.

...For real this time! No more extra lives. (At least until Boruto breaks him out of their back pockets).

And shortly after the final passing of these two legendary warriors, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha would face each other one last time at the Valley of the End. Their conflict would completely destroy the river created by Madara and Hashirama, as well as the statues made in their honor, and in the end the two would become friends once again, bringing the never-ending conflict between Indra and Asura, between the Uchiha and Senju, and between brothers to an end.

Relevant Terminology

Senjutsu: A special form of jutsu in which the user draws in natural energy and mixes it with the chakra in their body to increase its power.

Natural energy: The energy that exists within the ground and air. It can be drawn in and mixed with chakra to use senjutsu techniques. (Chakra usually uses a mix of physical and spiritual energy, so think of this as a third source of power mixed in.)

Jinchuuriki: An individual who has a Tailed Beast sealed within themselves. This grants them a huge increase in power thanks to the extra container of powerful chakra they possess.

Sensor type: Ninja who were born with heightened chakra-sensing capabilities. This allows them to sense its use in much smaller doses than the average ninja, even distinguishing individuals from their chakra alone and sensing how far away they are. They do need to actively search for it, however.

Jonin: Extremely skilled ninja, with its real world meaning being used to refer to masters. Often serve as team captains.

Kage: One of the leaders of the Five Great Ninja Villages. Often revered as the most powerful ninja of the continent.

Space-Time Ninjutsu: As the name implies, these are ninjutsu that involve the bending of space-time. They are most commonly used for teleportation techniques, in particular Summoning jutsu.

Kinjutsu: Forbidden Techniques, jutsu that have been banned from being used or taught. This can either be because they harm the user, cause large amounts of environmental damage, or disobey the laws of nature.

Kekkei Genkai: Bloodline Limit jutsu. These jutsu are considered more powerful/versatile than the standard jutsu techniques used by most ninja. They are referred to as “Bloodline Limits” because they are passed down through a bloodline of special genealogy, hence their greater power. The term can refer to Dojutsu, advanced nature transformations or certain body manipulation abilities.

Kekkei Mōra: Bloodline Expansion jutsu. These jutsu are believed to be exclusive to Kaguya Otsutsuki and her descendents, meaning they are extremely powerful techniques.

Rules of the Analysis

A lot of Madara’s techniques have overlap with each other (i.e something could involve both the Sharingan and Rinnegan dojutsu). When this is the case, I will include it underneath the section I think it’s most relevant to/reliant on, but I will also include bolded text to indicate the other parts of the arsenal they are related to.

Translations of the terminology vary by, well, the translation (anime dub, games, literal, etc). For the most part I decided to go with whatever was used by the Naruto wiki since I figured that would be the most “recognized” translation, with some exceptions. Elemental jutsu “Releases” will instead be referred to as “Styles” while Yin/Yang Release remain the same, and Impure World Reincarnation will instead be referred to as Edo Tensei.

There’s certain basic ninjutsu and chakra skills that we don’t see Madara perform, but given his prodigious nature and top tier status, it stands to reason he should be able to use them regardless and will therefore be included in this analysis. Likewise, while certain Sharingan have unique jutsu to them (Itachi’s Amaterasu, Kakashi and Obito’s Kamui, etc.) they should also all reasonably possess the same basic power set, and those abilities will also be included even if Madara hasn’t personally demonstrated them. The same applies to the Rinnegan’s Six Paths techniques.

In the context of Naruto’s real-time story (not including flashbacks), Madara is only actually active for a few days of the Fourth Great Ninja War, and he changes his powers around a lot during that time, gaining and losing several as the battle goes on. To present him at his maximum potential, this analysis will include just about everything he has had in his possession even if the timing of these abilities do not coincide. The only exceptions I’m making to this are Kakashi’s Mangekyou Sharingan, as that was only held for a few minutes until Madara could get to Obito in the Kamui Dimension and retrieve his Rinnegan. Not to mention Maddie’s own, superior Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan are being included and he can’t possess both at the same time, nor can we attribute Kamui to them. I also won’t be including his Edo Tensei body since, well, he’s already dead when that’s being used. It’s also explicitly stated by Madara himself that he is unable to become the Ten Tails jinchuuriki while in the Edo Tensei body, and there’d be no way for him to get back to his normal body without outside help.

Experience

Even among the ranks of the highly skilled Uchiha Clan of old (whom Sasuke says “the greatest genius in the universe barely comes off as average before”), Madara was considered a prodigy, capable of defeating and killing fully grown adults even in his youth. He trained against Hashirama as a child and was skilled in shuriken throwing. As an adult, he became the leader of the Uchiha Clan and under his leadership they became feared as one of the two strongest clans in the shinobi world. Aside from the Senju, Madara beat every shinobi clan the Uchiha encountered, and he was considered the strongest ninja in the world. The Uchiha joined with the Senju Clan to become the "Hidden Leaf" with Madara and Hashirama being the “leaders” of the village, though they had conflicting views on how to run it. He is incredibly smart in combat as well, and quickly managed to deduce what he believed would be Kakashi and Obito’s strategy for attacking him. And while his later years were not spent in combat, he was still experimenting with the Hashirama cells, White Zetsu and Demonic Statue, planning for the Infinite Tsukuyomi for much of that time and trained Obito in many ninja arts.

Madara’s Age (Theory Work)

While we do not know for sure how old Madara is, Obito says that his story began over 80 years before the main story takes place. Given he says this during Part II when Naruto is 16 years old, and we know Madara passed on shortly before his birth, he should have been at least 64 years old when he died… the second time.

This is just a baseline estimate however, as Obito likely wasn’t referring directly to Madara’s birth, but rather to the time when he and Hashirama fought as leaders of their clans, which would add at least an extra 20-40 years on and be a lot more consistent with how withered Madara is at the end of his life. Given he also spent much of that time attached to the Demonic Statue which was constantly regenerating him (and he said stepping away from it for a moment would kill him), it’s likely that he extended his life well beyond the average human’s and only succumbed to death when the Demonic Statue and Hashirama cells could no longer regenerate his body faster than it was deteriorating.

Weapons

Gunbai

A gunbai is a non-folding fan that Madara used during his adult years and when he was revived during the Fourth Great Ninja War, after having it returned to him from Obito. It is a large, wide fan which sometimes comes equipped with a long chain and kama sickle attached to it.

With the gunbai, Madara could use the Uchiha Return and Gunbai Fanned Wind jutsu. He typically wields it as both a shield and a mace to make for both an effective offensive and strong defensive weapon. The gunbai is durable enough to take a hit from Naruto's Super Mini-Tailed Beast Ball without taking severe damage.

Kama

A kama is a Japanese sickle with a short handle and sharp, rounded blade. Madara has one attached by a chain to his gunbai, which technically makes it a kusarigama, though it’d be difficult to use it as one is normally intended (for trapping at long range) due to it being an attachment. While we do not see Madara fight with it very much, he does use it in his battle against Hashirama at Konohagakure. The weapon’s real world use is typically for trapping and disarming an opponent’s weapon, and it is intended for slicing more than stabbing.

Sword

During his conflicts with Hashirama Senju as an adult, Madara can be seen wielding a sword resembling a ninjato. From what little is shown of him using it, he appears to be extremely proficient in its use.

Chakra

Chakra is life energy used by ninja to perform their jutsu. It is divided into two halves: the body energy that resides in an individual’s cells, and the spiritual energy that comes from their experience and training. Combining the two of these energies is what creates chakra, and it is through the use of a series of hand seals that chakra is converted and released as jutsu. How the seals are performed doesn’t particularly matter either, as they can be performed with just one hand or even using someone else’s. Individual people have different amounts of chakra, based on factors such as lineage, body limitations, and so on, but chakra reserves do not amount to much if they are not properly controlled. Focus is important to gathering chakra and if you release way too much chakra, you could die. The Uchiha had "unparalleled chakra" and were super gifted in combat. Madara himself is stated to have had the strongest chakra of the Uchiha, and he was always in battle, so his reserves are crazy big, no doubt in part thanks to the fact that he’s one of Indra Otsutsuki’s reincarnations.

Chakra is spread throughout the body through the “inner coils system”. They're branches that carry chakra to the different parts of the body. These coils surround the chakra-producing organs, so if you attack the inner coil system, you damage the organs. Above the inner coils system are 361 pressure points called chakra holes, which are the size of a needle tip. If you press these points accurately, you can stop or increase the target's chakra flow. The precision required is incredible however, as even the Sharingan can't see those points.

There’s a few basic abilities that ninjas can use through precise chakra. By gathering chakra in the bottom of one’s feet, an individual can climb vertical surfaces without their hands and even stand upside down. It takes a small but precise amount of chakra to climb a surface, with the bottom of the foot being said to be the most difficult place to gather chakra. This chakra control technique can also be used to walk on water, but rather than gather a set, continuous amount of chakra in the feet, it is instead expelled from the feet into the water. It is difficult to move ninja once they have chakra gathered in their feet as well, as Tsunade countered the Deva Path's gravity manipulation by sticking herself to the ground. That being said, the technique doesn’t just apply to surfaces, and can also be used to catch and throw objects, as demonstrated by Sasuke who catches a kunai. And through its nature of being life energy, chakra also provides some accelerated healing, though this healing process generally only works with injuries that a normal body could heal from. Larger injuries such as lost limbs won’t come back, as shown by Naruto and Sasuke’s final battle.

Ironically though, chakra was never actually intended to be weaponized like the ninja of Naruto’s world did. As stated by Madara himself:

“The world of the Sage of Six Paths has failed. The Chakra of the Sage of Six Paths that spread was the power to connect. The power to connect the spirit of people to one another. The goal was to reach a balance where everyone, without words, could understand each others’ hearts. The Sage of Six Paths took that power… and spread it across to people as a ninja sect, guiding them… But people didn’t use it to reach one another’s hearts… They used the chakra to connect their spirit energy with their own physical body’s energy. They used it as a way to amplify the power of their chakra. They weaponized it, used it to create ninjutsu. And ironically… The mother of the Sage of Six Paths, Kaguya, also returned to using chakra for battle.”

Six Paths Chakra

Six Paths chakra is a special form of chakra that combines the chakra of Indra and Asura Otsutski, or in other words the chakra of the Senju Clan and Uchiha Clan. While its exact properties are never gone over in detail, we know that it is far stronger than normal chakra. The combination of Senju and Uchiha chakra that Madara gained after implanting Hashirama’s cells into his body is what awakened his Rinnegan, and he learns a variety of techniques upon becoming the Jinchuriki of the Ten Tailed Beast.

Six Paths Senjutsu

Six Paths Senjutsu is a special variation of senjutsu that Madara obtained when he became the Ten Tailed Beast’s Jinchuuriki. It greatly increases his abilities, to the point where Minato claims that only other senjutsu techniques and physical attacks will harm him, with ninjutsu and genjutsu being completely ineffective. It also greatly improves his chakra sensing technique, as Naruto, who also had Six Paths Senjutsu, was capable of sensing the presence of Madara’s Limbo Shadows despite them existing on another plane, and seriously amps up his regeneration abilities.

Truth-Seeking Balls

Truth-Seeking Balls are jutsu provided by Six Paths Senjutsu and are orbs of chakra composed of all the elemental natures transformations which can ignore all durability and destroy anything that they come into contact with, even preventing Edo Tensei reincarnations from regenerating as it “nullifies all jutsu”. The Third Hokage even compares it to Particle Style jutsu, which destroys matter at the molecular level. This, combined with their superb agility, makes them excellent tools for both offense and defense, even capable of easily dispelling Sasuke’s Amaterasu, which can burn through fireproof substances and is said to be hotter than the sun. They can only fly about 70 meters before Madara loses control over them, but within that radius they can fly at anything the Uchiha can see. He gained access to Truth-Seeking Balls after becoming the jinchuuriki of the Ten Tailed Beast and can use up to ten of them at a time

Despite being called Truth-Seeking “Balls”, their shape can be manipulated into a variety of other forms and weaponry, such as the previously seen bubble shield and staff, and rods resembling the Rinnegan’s Black Receivers. Minato says that they can transform with “almost limitless reserve”. It is possible to resist their disintegration effects if one also has the power of the Six Paths however, as both Madara and Naruto survived touching them.

Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal

This jutsu is used by Rinnegan users such as Madara to seal the Ten Tails in their body and turn that individual into its jinchuuriki. Its only requirement is that the Ten Tailed Beast be awakened and close by the user.

Ninjutsu

Ninjutsu, or ninja techniques, refers to the art of manipulating one’s chakra to perform superhuman abilities and attacks, resembling magic spells. Ninjutsu require the use of shape manipulation in order to be performed, in which an individual changes the shape and movement of their chakra to enact their techniques. On top of that, many also involve the use of nature manipulation, in which the chakra’s physical properties are changed to that of one of the many elements.

Fire Style Jutsu

Fire Style Jutsu are the specialty of Uchiha Clan members such as Madara. They typically involve gathering chakra in the body and expelling it through the mouth as fire, with varying degrees of forms and power. Fire Style jutsu are strong against Wind Style but weak to Water Style.

Great Fireball Technique

The Great Fireball Technique is the staple of the Uchiha Clan, with its members only being considered adults when they have mastered this ninjutsu. The user gathers chakra in the mouth and then expels it as flame, with power and size varying by how much chakra is gathered. It can be launched as either a giant fireball projectile or as a continuous stream of flames (as shown in the previously linked page).

Great Fire Annihilation

Madara releases a massive wave of fire from his mouth that dwarfs himself and other ninjas. It’s so powerful that despite the Fire Style’s weakness to water, it was still able to withstand being doused with multiple water jutsu from a horde of ninja.

Great Fire Destruction

Think the Great Fire Annihilation jutsu but targeted. Madara launches a massive but condensed wave of fire at his target. When Madara used this technique during his battle against the Five Kage, it lit the surrounding tree on fire and caused them to lose consciousness from the intense heat.

Dragon Flame Release Song Technique

Madara launches three dragon heads made out of fire from his mouth to attack his foe. They move in wild patterns, making it difficult to dodge.

Hiding in Ash and Dust Technique

With this technique, Madara creates a fiery explosion that blows back Naruto and Sasuke and covers the battlefield in smoke

Wind Style Jutsu

Wind Style ninjutsu generally focuses on two types of attacks: blowing away targets with large gusts of wind or channeling the wind through various methods for piercing/slicing damage. Wind Style is strong against Lightning Style jutsu but weak against Fire Style jutsu - when combined with the latter, it makes the fire even stronger. Madara hasn’t been shown performing any Wind Styles on his own however, and instead relies on his gunbai for them.

Gunbai Fanned Wind

A pretty simplistic Wind Style Jutsu in which Madara waves his gunbai and creates a giant gust of wind that can blow back opponents.

Uchiha Return

This jutsu also involves the use of Madara’s gunbai. By blocking a jutsu with his weapon, Madara can nullify the attack then redirect it back at the target with a large blast. He does this during his fight with Naruto to defend against the Rasengan.

Wood Style Jutsu

Wood Style is a kekkei genkai elemental jutsu which combines water and earth natures, allowing the user to control wood and create trees of various numbers, shapes and sizes, be it from their own body or the earth beneath their feet. These characteristics make it great for capturing foes or overwhelming them through sheer size and power, and it has the unique ability of absorbing a target’s chakra should they be caught.

Wood Style was originally believed to be exclusive to Hashirama, but Madara gained access to it when he had Hashirama’s cells implanted in his body.

Wood Clone Techniques

A clone technique in which the user alters their makeup to be actual wood, which can be used as either simple decoys or full clones that move and fight. The original can also change the shape of their clones and use them for tracking, and they can still be dispelled as usual. Unlike other clone techniques, the wood clone doesn't disappear when hit and takes the damage to a certain degree. Also unlike other clone techniques however, wood clones cannot function at full effort if the user is dividing their focus and channeling too much chakra.

With the Multi Wood Clone Technique, Madara can create at least 25 wood clones of himself to fight the Five Kage, each of which were capable of using Susanoo.

Wood Dragon Technique

Madara creates a giant wooden dragon which can bind targets or be used for attacking, and can absorb chakra from its target by biting them. It is strong enough to restrain the Nine Tailed Fox and could fight with Madara’s Susanoo when used by Hashirama.

Advent of a World of Flowering Trees

This Wood Style technique causes huge amounts of wood to shoot out from the ground, creating a forest in an instant. The plants of this forest release a harmful pollen which can knock out anyone who inhales too much of it.

Secret Technique: Nativity of a World of Trees

Madara causes trees to grow by instilling his chakra into them, with the rate of growth depending on the chakra outputs. In just a few moments, an entire forest of trees could be created.

Storm Style Jutsu

Storm Style jutsu is a class of advanced nature transformation kekkei genkai techniques, which combines the lightning and water elements.

Light Fang

The Light Fang is a Sage Art Storm Style jutsu, meaning it requires senjutsu chakra in order to be performed. Madara fires a thin, straight laser from his mouth which can cut through a truth-seeking ball. According to the Official Fourth Databook, this beam moves at the speed of light

Yin Release Jutsu

Yin Release is a type of jutsu that exists beyond the elemental jutsu which involves using spiritual energy to create from nothing. Madara gains access to this type of element alongside Yang Release after acquiring Six Paths Senjutsu

Lightning Dispatch

Using Senjutsu to gather natural energy, Madara can use this Sage Art to shoot purple lightning from his hands. (As if there weren’t enough Palpatine comparisons to be had already.)

Yang Release

Yang Release is a type of jutsu that exists beyond the elemental jutsu which involves using physical energy to empower life. Madara gains access to this type of element alongside Yin Release after acquiring Six Paths Senjutsu

Yin–Yang Release

As the name implies, Yin-Yang Release is a combination of Yin and Yang Release, or rather it uses both spiritual energy and physical energy that Madara gains from his Six Paths Senjutsu. This is the jutsu that the original Sage of Six Paths used to create the Tailed Beasts (giving them form and then giving them life), and the jutsu which Madara uses for his Truth-Seeking Balls.

Miscellaneous Ninjutsu

Sensing Technique

While all ninjas are capable of sensing large amounts of chakra, Madara is an actual sensor type shinobi and capable of sensing much smaller amounts of chakra. With this sensing technique, he was able to tell that Hashirama Senju had been revived despite being miles away from his old rival, and this is likely how he was able to fight with the likes of Sasuke and Naruto despite losing his eyesight upon being completely revived. His sensory abilities are so precise that he could even tell exactly what type of Sharingan Sasuke has. This technique is made even more powerful by Six Paths Senjutsu as Naruto, who also had Six Paths Senjutsu, was capable of sensing the presence of Madara’s Limbo Shadows despite them existing on another plane.

Chakra Absorption Technique

A pretty self-explanatory ability in which Madara can absorb the chakra of people or ninjutsu when he makes physical contact with them. He used this technique to absorb Sasuke’s powerful Amaterasu, comparing it to the rubble at his feet, as well as to absorb the senjutsu chakra used by Hashirama.

Transformation Technique

The Transformation Technique is a basic ninjutsu. In a puff of smoke, the user transforms into another person, though it can also be used to transform into plants, animals and inanimate objects. These are much more difficult to perform however.

The Transformation Technique is typically used for infiltration and reconnaissance, but it also makes an effective tool in combat to disorient and trick enemies when fighting in groups.

Body Replacement Technique

With the Body Replacement Technique, the user is struck by an attack and then quickly replaces themselves with something else, such as a block of wood or another person. This leaves their attacker confused for a moment and allows the user to counterattack while their position is still unknown. While it is typically used on one’s self, Naruto used it to replace Inari with a wooden block and save him from ninjas.

Clone Technique

The most basic of clone techniques, in which the user creates one or more clones to “fight” alongside them. They are not actually capable of physically interacting with opponents however, and so they are instead used for misdirection.

Shadow Clone Technique

The Shadow Clone jutsu is a clone technique developed by the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju and as the name implies, it allows the user to make a perfect duplicate of themselves. While the standard Clone Technique merely creates an illusion, shadow clones have an actual mass, meaning they can actually be used for combat. When creating Shadow Clones, the user divides their chakra evenly among the clones they create: one clone gets half their chakra, two clones a third, etc. Since this can lead to chakra reserves running low quickly if too many are used, most shinobi are unable to use the Multi-Shadow Clone jutsu technique and it has been labelled a kinjutsu. This does not appear to be much of a problem for Madara however, as he was capable of creating over two dozen Wood Style clones, though he likely cannot go to the hundreds like Naruto can.

Shadow Clones can be used for a variety of purposes, such as as decoys, overwhelming an opponent through sheer numbers and by attacking from multiple directions, helping the user out with certain techniques, or buying them some time. And while Shadow Clones will usually disperse after being hit a few times/hard enough, Madara somehow managed to make a Shadow Clone that remained active despite having an autopsy performed on it and then being buried. Stopping the body's flow of chakra will also force the Shadow Clones to disappear, though this is not easily exploitable by the average ninja.

Clones can also disappear after completing a task or by having the jutsu released by a user. Once the jutsu is released, any information learned by the Shadow Clone will be directly fed back to the original caster, along with the chakra required to make them, making it ideal for reconnaissance and infiltration missions. In battle, this can be used to essentially run a “simulation” of how an encounter with the opponent would go.

Shadow Clone jutsu doesn’t just need to be used on the user however, as it can also allow the caster to multiply weapons such as shuriken tenfold, though it is unclear how this works given they do not have chakra to be divided among clones.

Summoning Technique

The Summoning Technique is a space-time ninjutsu which allows the user to teleport a person, animal, object or any other target to their location instantly. The usual process for this involves making a blood contract with an animal domain (such as frogs, snakes, dogs, etc.) and then exerting their chakra to summon a creature from that domain. The exact size and power of this animal varies by how much chakra is put into the summoning jutsu, however. Upon summoning the animal, and assuming they have a good enough relationship/respect for each other that they are willing to work together, the animal can be used for the standard ninja tasks such as an assistant in combat, for tracking, travel, or whatever else is in their range of abilities.

In Madara’s case however, he does not have the usual “contract”. Essentially, having the Rinnegan is his contract and it allows him to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path through, well, the Outer Path. However, summoning it in this fashion will make the Demonic Statue latch on to its summoner and suck their life force out of them, so Madara instead relies on the blood sacrifice summoning ritual to preserve himself while getting the aid he needs. Likewise, he can also use this technique to summon the Ten-Tails.

Genjutsu

Genjutsu refers to illusionary techniques which cause a target to experience sensations that are not actually occurring. These techniques are performed by disrupting a target’s chakra flow to their brain, manipulating their sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch to create fake sensations. Some genjutsu are so powerful that the target will genuinely feel the pain linger even after the genjutsu is dispelled. They can also be used to force certain thoughts and actions on a target.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu refers to ninja hand-to-hand combat, without the use of weapons or ninjutsu or illusionary techniques. It does not rely on chakra and hand seals to be performed, though chakra can be used to increase the power of certain blows. While this does mean the attacks lack raw power in comparison, they can also be performed much quicker and will not wear down the user’s energy nearly as much. Madara is so skilled at Taijutsu that he was able to defeat a horde of ninja from the Shinobi Allied Forces with just his fists in the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Kenjutsu

Kenjutsu refers to ninja combat with the use of a sword. Madara has been shown to be very proficient in it, having carried a sword with him back during his conflicts with Hashirama and even briefly during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Dojutsu

Dojutsu refers to ninja techniques that involve the use of one’s eyes. They are typically acquired through Kekkei Genkai, with Madara having access to a number of them himself, and is capable of switching between all of them.

Sharingan

The Sharingan is a dojutsu to be wielded only by members of the Uchiha, descendents of Indra Otsutsuki. When an Uchiha experiences intense emotion, the brain releases a special kind of chakra that affects the optic nerve, awakening their Sharingan, with Madara having activated his own when he was a kid. It was originally believed to only be brought on by intense negative emotions, but this is later shown that the requirements are just intense emotions by Uchiha such as Obito, who manifested his out of a desire to save Kakashi and Rin, and Sarada who manifested her’s out of love for her father. The Sharingan eyes provide the user with an array of abilities divided into two categories: insight and hypnotism.

The Sharingan grants the user’s eyes a heightened level of perception that allows them to see things normal eyes cannot, even the smallest details like discerning lip movements or perception on the cellular level. It greatly enhances their precision and accuracy as well. By reading a person's muscle movements, they can predict their course of action in advance and react accordingly, and it lets the user actually perceive chakra by "giving it color", even seeing how it flows through one's body. The term literally means “Copy Wheel Eye”, and in keeping with its name it is said that possessing one allows the user to read and defeat all types of Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu. It also lets you copy a technique once you’ve seen it only once. Even at its base level, the Sharingan can evolve by gaining up to three tomoe, each one increasing the user’s perceptive process more and more. And as expected, Madara has all three of them.

There are limitations to the Sharingan however. As the user must be physically capable of the technique in order to copy it and cannot copy abilities like Kekkei Genkai jutsu that stem from an individual's genealogy, and they obviously cannot copy anything they cannot see. And while its movement reading abilities are impressive, they can still be worn down as the user begins to tire, and it doesn't mean squat in the first place if the user is still too slow to react to their opponent's attack.

Genjutsu: Sharingan

The Sharingan’s genjutsu is, as you would expect, an illusionary technique that is activated through making eye contact with an Uchiha’s Sharingan eyes. While the illusions shown by the genjutsu are not known for taking any particular form like most illusionary techniques do, it can cause a variety of effects on the desired target, such as paralyzing them, knocking them unconscious and forcing them to give up information. It can even show targets one’s own memories and erase those of another, remove genjutsu placed on others and control a person’s actions.

Izanagi

One of the Uchiha Clan’s infamous kinjutsu. With Izanagi, the user can control the space between reality and illusion and overwrite any brief moment in time with a new reality where what did occur never occurred, even injury or death. It was used by the Sage of Six Paths to control all creation, involving the use of Yang Release and Yin Release to create the “shape” of the illusion and then give it life. Because of this, most Uchiha were not able to control the technique very well as they only had access to half of the Sage of Six Paths’ chakra, but those such as Madara and Obito with both Uchiha and Senju chakra (thanks to their Hashirama Cells) are able to cast much more powerful illusions that can be activated over a longer period of time.

However due to how powerful the ninjutsu was, anyone who used it would have to pay the price of losing sight in the eye they cast it with, preventing them from ever using their Sharingan again unless they manage to evolve it into the Rinnegan like Madara did.

Transcription Seal: Izanagi

While the standard Izanagi is to be used in the moment, Transcription Seal: Izanagi seals the jutsu in the user’s Sharingan and will only be activated when set parameters are met. In Madara’s case, he set his right eye to activate Izanagi should he be killed, which allowed him to overwrite his death and be revived without any of the Leaf Ninja realizing it. Of course, it does still remove the light from the eye he used it in.

Izanami

The other legendary kinjutsu of the Uchiha, which was developed specifically to punish those who abused Izanagi so they could achieve their desired results. When Izanami is used, the target gets trapped in a loop so that the same things happen over and over again. It works by the user doing an action and then repeating the action later. Those two moments are connected in a time loop and so everything that happens between them connects as well, creating an infinite loop in which the target's mind is trapped forever. In the words of Itachi, “If Izanagi is a jutsu that changes destiny, Izanami can decide it!

As Izanami was developed to save those who had grown arrogant in the power of Izanagi however, it is possible to break out of the infinite loop. When one accepts the fact that they cannot run away from the results they have been dealt and instead chooses to face their destiny, Izanami will dissolve. And like Izanagi, the use of this technique takes away the light of one’s Sharingan, blinding them in that eye and preventing them from using the Dojutsu ever again.

Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan

The Mangekyou Sharingan is an evolution of the standard Sharingan brought on by the trauma of witnessing the loss of someone very important to the user, such as a sibling or a friend. Because of this, it was actually quite common in the past for Uchiha to kill their best friends in order to awaken its power. Madara and his brother were actually the first people to ever awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan, granting them a bunch of new abilities.

Unfortunately, if the Uchiha overuse their Mangekyou Sharingan, they will eventually go blind. Madara himself started to experience this, but after being mortally wounded by Tobirama Senju, Izuna gave his own Mangekyou Sharingan to his older brother, telling Madara that he will see the future through his use of the Mangekyou before passing on. And thanks to this, Madara didn’t just get any normal Mangekyou Sharingan. This granted him the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan, a Mangekyou Sharingan which would never lose its light no matter how much it was used, and the proof that an Uchiha has managed to keep pushing forward despite experiencing devastating loss.

Susanoo

The Susanoo is the primary ability granted by the Mangekyou Sharingan. The user manifests their chakra as a giant, humanoid avatar that surrounds and protects them. Both eyes are required to wield it however, as demonstrated by Kakashi who only manifested it when he received both of Obito’s Mangekyou eyes.

Madara can manifest his in several ways, such as a ribcage purely for defense, a more formed version that can attack with Yasaka Magatama or a sword, or even a giant that dwarfs ninja. Then there's the colossal full body version of the Susanoo is known as the Perfect Susanoo, which Madara controls from its headpiece. This is easily the most powerful version, and it’s capable of flight. According to Madara himself, "the Susanoo is destruction incarnate. One slash of its sword possesses the power to break all creation. Only the Tailed Beasts have a power comparable to this." While this is obviously hyperbole, it does at least possess the power to casually slice through mountains.

The Susanoo is not invulnerable however and can be broken, and it does not defend the user from sound attacks.

Susanoo Fist

The user manifests only the arm of their Susanoo rather than the entire thing, typically just to block attack or for extra power in physical attacks.

Yasaka Magatama

The Yasaka Magatama is a jutsu used by the Susanoo in which it forms spinning blades that resemble shurikens in its hand to throw at targets. These blades can either be connected by a thread or be thrown individually.

Evil Disturbance Waltz

The Evil Disturbance Waltz is a simple technique in which Madara’s Susanoo throws its sword like shuriken to deal damage

Time Reversal Jutsu

An ability that most people aren’t aware of, and for good reason. It only makes an appearance in one OVA from a Ninja Storm game and never in the actual manga or anime, but it’s worth the mention. While it isn’t explicitly stated what this jutsu does, it appears that Madara’s right eye marks a specific moment in time and his left eye allows him to rewind events to that save point. This allows him to re-evaluate his moves and make a new one should the outcome not be to his advantage. It cannot be spammed however, so Madara needs to be careful about what points he chooses to mark and when to reverse them.

The canon of this ability is a bit finicky. It doesn’t exactly contradict the main series since we never find out what Madara’s unique Mangekyou ability is and the Ninja Storm OVAs are intended to be able to fit into the canon and add to it. That being said, the OVA itself plays out the Madara VS Hashirama fight quite differently from how the manga and anime do it, so its status is up in the air. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to include.

Arguments to Address

It’s stated in the Third Databook that in order to gain access to the Susanoo, one needs to have mastered both the Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi jutsu. Since Madara has a full body Susanoo, this must mean that he can use both of those jutsu too, right? Welllll, I would disagree. Unlike things like the Light Fang, where there’s corroborating feats in the story to back up the idea that it’s a lightspeed attack, mastery over Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi as a requirement for Susanoo doesn’t match up with a lot of the things presented in canon.

For starters, the story seems to make it pretty established that different Mangekyou Sharingan have different unique abilities. While Sasuke and Itachi have Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi, Kakashi and Obito have Kamui, Shisui has Kotoamatsukami, Shin has control over weapons, and we just talked about Madara’s potential time reversal. If Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi could be applied to everyone else, while the obvious question of “why don’t we see Madara, Kakashi and Obito use them” could be handwaved by the classic “Kishimoto didn’t think about it”, that still leaves us without knowing what Sasuke and Itachi’s special jutsu is, which I doubt is the intention.

A more damning piece of evidence is the fact that at the end of the story, Kakashi gets both of Obito’s Mangekyou Sharingan and uses them to manifest a full body Susanoo. It doesn’t make sense to say he had mastered Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi when he hadn’t even had both Sharingan before. It could maybe be argued that Kakashi mastered Amaterasu in the left eye and Obito mastered Tsukuyomi in the right and that “mastery” is based on the eye rather than the user, but that’s too many assumptions to safely make an argument around. Again, I doubt that was the intention.

Finally, Sasuke started to manifest his own Susanoo well before his battle with Danzo, during which he stated that Sasuke’s Tsukuyomi was a far cry from Itachi’s and even managed to break out of it. Doesn’t quite look like “mastery” to me, so it’s unlikely this is an actual prerequisite and thus probably shouldn’t be given to Madara.

Based off what Amaterasu and Tsukuyoki represent - the sun and the moon, light and darkness - it’s possible that this is what the guidebook was referring to instead: one needs to have walked both the path of light and darkness to access the Susanoo, rather than mastery of those two specific abilities.

Rinnegan

The Rinnegan is one of the three great Dojutsu of the ninja world alongside the Sharingan and Byakugan, even being revered as the greatest of the trio. The Rinnegan can be awakened within an individual when the chakra of the Senju and Uchiha clan - or more specifically the chakra of Indra and Ashura Otsutsuki - mix in their bodies. For Madara, he obtained the Rinnegan when he implanted Hashirama’s cells into his body.

It is important to note that while Madara has not demonstrated all of the abilities that will be listed himself, he should be capable of all of them, especially since many of these come from Nagato and Obito, who were using the exact Rinnegan that Madara does when performing these feats.

Black Receiver

Black Receivers are long black rods that are as durable as steel. They can reasonably be formed from any part of the wielder’s body, though it is most commonly formed from the hands and used as a stabbing weapon, as well as a projectile and a staff. They can even produce chains to bind a target. While it is within an enemy’s body, the user can send their chakra through the receiver to disrupt their foe’s chakra flow and make it difficult to control even their movements, with multiple receivers even completely preventing them from moving, though this can be overcome by simply ripping the rod out or if one’s chakra is strong enough to resist, compared to the number of rods they've been hit with.

The Black Receivers are strong enough to intercept Sasuke’s Amaterasu, but they can still be broken with enough force.

Limbo: Border Jail

Madara creates a limbo shadow of himself, which can interact with the physical plane but is invisible to the common person and cannot be affected by physical attacks. A single Rinnegan can create two shadows, so with both of his Rinnegan, Madara can create up to four of them. These shadows move independently from Madara while maintaining all of his own abilities, essentially operating as Shadow Clones that cannot be perceived through normal means. This allows Madara to overwhelm opponents without most ever knowing what’s going on.

It is not impossible to see the Limbo Shadows however. Sasuke could perceive them thanks to his own Rinnegan, and while Naruto couldn’t see the Madara clones, he could sense their presence and even fight them. And unlike regular Shadow Clones, Limbo Shadows will take the same damage that the real Madara does, and they will need to return to him after a period of time before they can be used again. This is not true for vice-versa however, as the Limbo Shadows can be substituted in for Madara to avoid damage.

Deva Path

The Deva Path grants the user control of gravity, or more specifically, attractive and repulsive forces, allowing it to repel physical attacks, ninjutsu and weaponry. This ability cannot be used in quick succession however, and there’s a short interval of about five seconds in which the user will need to recharge before the power can be used again. The more the Deva Path’s power is used, the longer these intervals will become. This Path can also be used to levitate.

Bansho Ten’in

With Bansho Ten’in, the user manipulates attractive forces to pull a target towards them. It can be used on just a single target or multiple at once. This technique is typically used in combination with a close quarters attack such as piercing moves or the Preta Path to easily hit targets with attacks they could otherwise defend from/dodge if they were in control of their movement. It’s important to note that it only has a range of about ten meters, and anything outside of that cannot be pulled in.

Shinra Tensei

With Shinra Tensei, the user creates a large repulsion field around themselves that completely pushes away everything around them. During Pain’s Assault on Konoha, the Deva Path of Pain used this technique to blast away several Leaf ninjas’ attacks and destroy the surrounding area and buildings. It can even blast back several boss frogs, causing extra damage and breaking Gamabunta's bones.

Chibaku Tensei

The user launches a black orb into the sky. Once activated, its gravity intensifies to an absurd degree, ripping out the land beneath it and creating a giant sphere in the sky.  It is typically used for capturing and restraining foes rather than damaging them, as shown in Nagato’s fight with the Six-Tailed Naruto and Sasuke’s use of it to restrain the Tailed Beasts. That being said, when Madara used it in his fight with Team Seven, he created numerous spheres in the sky to crash down on his enemies. It is possible to prevent Chibaku Tensei from activating by destroying the black orb however, and you don’t need to aim due to its gravitational pull.

It is said that this is the technique that the Sage of Six Paths used to create the moon.

Tengai Shinsei

With his Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan/Susanoo, Madara makes three hand sign seals and then pulls an enormous meteor down from the sky. Gaara compares his power to that of a god’s, and it was reported to be so large that it obscured the entire sky for those directly beneath it. Then to add insult to injury, he can just call down a second one right after!

There’s been some contention over what exactly is happening when Madara uses this ability. Is he pulling down random meteors that are passing by? Does he somehow store meteors in the upper atmosphere? Is Chibaku Tensei somehow involved? We don’t know for sure what is happening, but my theory is that based on the use of hand signs (which is uncommon for most Dojutsu techniques, especially that many), he’s likely creating the meteors in the upper atmosphere himself and then pulling them down with the Deva Path’s abilities. This adds up with the fact that the meteors are a similar, enormous size.

Human Path

The Human Path lets the user read a victim’s mind by placing their hand on their head, rendering them immobile while this ability is being used. It can also pull a target’s soul from their body through either their head or their chest, killing them once it's been extracted. The stolen souls can also be stored in the King of Hell.

Preta Path

The Preta Path allows the user to absorb any form of chakra from a target. It can be used to absorb ninjutsu such as the Rasenshuriken or directly from an individual. This also works on Senjutsu chakra, but absorbing too much will cause the user to start turning into a frog and then to stone if they cannot properly control the natural energy.

Blocking Technique Absorption Seal

This jutsu creates a sphere around the Preta Path user that allows them to automatically absorb any chakra that comes into contact with it, regardless of shape or size. The Preta Path of Pain used it to absorb Sage Mode Jiraiya’s Big Ball Rasengan.

Naraka Path

The Naraka Path is used for interrogation. By restraining a target (usually by the throat) the user can summon the King of Hell and ask their foe a question. When they provide an answer, the King of Hell pulls out their tongues and begins to absorb their life force. If they told the truth, they will be spared judgement and simply fall to the ground exhausted. But if they lie, the King of Hell rips out their tongues and their life force and the target is killed. Refusing to answer will also kill them.

As stated however, this technique does need that the target be captured in order to work. Konohamaru managed to escape the Naraka Path of Pain with Shadow Clones, and it stands to reason that characters with superior strength to the user, teleportation, or other abilities that could let them escape the user’s grasp would render the Path ineffective.

Asura Path

The Asura Path allows the user to augment their body with mechanical limbs and weaponry. The ones we have seen are:

Asura Attack

The user opens up a part of their body (such as the previously mentioned head or arm) and fires a massive blast of chakra energy from it. This attack is powerful enough to destroy buildings.

Flaming Arrow Warhead

This technique refers to the firing of the missiles loaded in the Asura Path’s arm. The further the arm is removed, the more missiles will be loaded and fired. Each missile is launched in a different direction with enough power to destroy buildings and have homing capabilities.

Flaming Arrow of Amazing Ability

This attack involves the user building up chakra in their hand and then launching a rocket-powered fist from their body to strike their foe with enough force to destroy solid stone. Once the attack has been completed, the fist returns to the user’s arm through a magnet.

Animal Path

The Animal Path allows the user to summon giant animals to assist in combat without the need for a blood sacrifice or contract like typical summoning jutsu. They are typically used to overwhelm opponents through size, numbers and destructive force, having enough to wreak havoc on buildings during Pain’s assault on Konoha, as well as for transportation.

Outer Path

The Outer Path grants the user control over life and death, allowing them to revive the dead through the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique at the cost of their own life. This technique releases the souls of the dead from the King of Hell back to their own bodies, which may imply that it can only revive those that the user has personally killed themselves. It also allows them to transmit their chakra into the black receivers and control the bodies of those they have implanted those rods into from a distance (though it is most effective on the deceased as living people can resist them, as shown by Naruto), and manifest chakra chains from the Demonic Statue.

Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

This Summoning technique is used as part of the Rinnegan’s Outer Path’s abilities, in which they summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Rather than requiring a blood offering as other summons do, the statue instead drains the user's life force. So while this technique is available to Madara, he does not typically use it and instead goes for the traditional blood sacrifice Summoning Technique.

Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path is the shell of the Ten Tailed Beast after it had its chakra removed and split into the Nine Tailed Beasts. When Madara awakened his Rinnegan, he gained the ability to summon the statue from the moon where it had been sealed. It has an incredibly powerful lifeforce, which is how Madara sustained his lifespan for so long (should he ever move from the statue, he would die instantly) and wields incredible physical strength thanks to its size, which lets it stand above the clouds. It could shoot dragon-like apparitions that would absorb the chakra of anyone it touched and kill them, and create giant shockwaves of chakra that could blow back the Multi-Sized Choza and Choji Akimichi.

By absorbing all of the Nine Tailed Beasts’ chakra, whether it be the full thing or just a sliver of their chakra, the Demonic Statue will then transform back into its original form of the Ten Tails.

 Demonic Statue Chains

As the name tells, the Demonic Statue Chains are the chakra chains of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path which can be used to bind targets and cause them great pain. While they can be broken, they are easily restorable as well. The Demonic Statue is capable of using them itself, even absorbing targets such as the Tailed Beasts into its body with them, with Madara himself even having the statue use its chains to absorb all ten Tailed Beasts

Rinne Sharingan

The Rinne Sharingan is a Kekkei Mōra and, as the name implies, the predecessor to the Sharingan and Rinnegan which split off from this original dojutsu. When an individual with the Rinnegan approaches the moon, they can manifest its power as a third eye that appears on their foreheads, which is exactly what Madara did after becoming the Ten Tailed Beast’s jinchuuriki and regaining both his Rinnegan. While not known is much about its full power, it is likely that the Rinne Sharingan has the same abilities as both the Sharingan and Rinnegan combined.

Infinite Tsukuyomi

Madara’s goal was to become the new Sage of Six Paths, gain the Rinne Sharingan and then fly into the sky to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi genjutsu. The user reflects their Rinne Sharingan off of the moon, creating a huge glowing light that can be seen throughout the entire world and even make it seem as if it were daytime for those in the night. Anyone (everyone) unfortunate enough to lay their eyes on this light will develop the Rinnegan patterns in their eyes and will see their greatest dream. This allows all victims to be captured by the Nativity of a World of Trees with no resistance, and the only way to save them is to cancel the genjutsu altogether and destroy the God Tree.

It is possible to avoid the effects of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, however. Those who had been revived by Edo Tensei could resist it since they were dead, Sasuke saves himself and Team Seven from it thanks to the light not getting through his Susanoo and Obito isn't affected by it due to being taken over by Black Zetsu while the genjutsu was active.

God: Nativity of a World of Trees

This mouthful of a Wood Style technique is used to spread the roots of the God Tree throughout the entire world to ensnare all those caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi’s genjutsu, wrapping them up in cocoons and showing them their greatest dream forever while slowly absorbing their chakra. When the entire planet’s chakra has been absorbed, the God Tree will create a new Chakra Fruit. The chakra of its victims can also be absorbed by the original casters, and should anyone be cut down from their cocoons, the God Tree will automatically pick them back up and reattach them so long as they are still stuck in the genjutsu. As time goes on and more of their chakra is absorbed however, the people trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi will eventually be transformed into White Zetsus, with the only way to save them being to cancel the genjutsu altogether and destroy the God Tree.

Juinjutsu

Juinjutsu (otherwise known as Cursed Seal techniques) are a type of jutsu that are placed upon an individual to bring them under the user’s control. They are administered through physical means by placing them on or inside the target’s body and allows the user to take control of their abilities while the seal is active.

Forbidden Individual Curse Tag

The Forbidden Individual Curse Tag is a juinjutsu placed by Madara onto a person’s heart to ensure that his targets do not take their own life. He used it on Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha to make sure that they would remain pawns in his long-term plans. As they were unable to kill themselves or remove the seal, they instead relied on Kakashi Hatake to pierce their heart with his Raikiri to remove it, killing Rin in the process and nearly Obito, had it not been for his regenerative powers and soon becoming the Ten Tails’ Jinchuuriki.

Miscellaneous

Hashirama Cells

Hashirama Cells are exactly as they sound: they are the cells of Hashirama Senju that Madara had implanted into his body upon being revived by Izanagi. By implanting these cells over his wounds, the Senju chakra within them mixed with Madara’s own Uchiha chakra, allowing him to awaken the Rinnegan and restore the eyesight he lost by using Izanagi. It is also thanks to implanting Hashirama’s cells into his body that Madara is capable of using the Wood Style kekkei genkai which was believed to be exclusive to Hashirama, and it allows for some pretty impressive regenerative abilities.

Regeneration

Hashirama’s Cells also provide those imbued with them a strong healing factor. The White Zetsu (formed from Hashirama’s cells) that merged with Obito Uchiha completely regenerated the destroyed left side of his body, and it helped him survive Kakashi ramming a Raikiri Kunai straight through his chest. This ability is further enhanced by Six Paths Senjutsu, with Madara himself having survived getting a massive part of his body blown off and burned from the power of Might Guy’s Eighth Gate of Death. He even survived being cut in half and continued fighting without much issue thanks to them, regrowing a new lower-half not long after. Recovering from the Night Guy attack only took a small period of time as well, making it quite the powerful healing factor.

Sage Mode

By absorbing Hashirama’s Senjutsu chakra, Madara was able to access Sage Mode, which greatly increases his strength, speed and chakra sensing. Even though he had no prior training in controlling Senjutsu, Madara stated that it was surprisingly disappointing how easy it was to manipulate. This is especially impressive since an inability to properly control the natural energy used to create Senjutsu will turn the user into a frog, which even a master like Jiraiya wasn’t fully capable of overcoming

Ten-Tails

The Ten Tailed Beast is said to be the creator of all chakra, being the combined form of Kaguya Otsutsuki and the God Tree. A millennium ago, it went on a rampage in an attempt to take back the chakra that Kaguya’s sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, stole from her, which eventually resulted in its defeat when Hagoromo sealed it within his body, becoming its jinchuuriki and the Sage of Six Paths. He later split it into the Nine Tailed Beasts to make sure it wouldn’t cause any more harm, leaving behind a husk of its former self known as the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path

Madara and Obito learned that the Ten-Tails could be revived if all the Tailed Beasts were absorbed by the Demonic Statue, and so capturing the jinchuuriki of present day, extracting their Tailed Beasts and having the statue absorb them became a large part of their Eye of the Moon Plan. Madara has shown that he can call upon the Ten-Tails with the Summoning Technique and can then use the Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal to seal the beast within himself and enter his jinchuuriki form. However, after being summoned, the Ten-Tails can only be controlled for so long before it goes on a complete rampage again, and so it must be sealed in order to keep its power in check. Lucky for Madara, he was easily able to control the Ten-Tails’ power upon sealing it within his body.

The Ten-Tails is capable of using Six Paths Senjutsu and Truth-Seeking Balls, but it also has a few of its own powers.

Tailed Beast Ball

The trademark attack of all the Tailed Beasts, the Tailed Beast Ball has the Ten-Tails condense chakra into its mouth and then fire it for incredible destructive force, with a massive range that can let the attack fly hundreds of miles away. Despite its name, it can take more forms than just a ball, as the Ten-Tails has fired it as a beam so powerful that it completely destroyed the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails own Beast Balls, and then another that destroyed entire mountains and left massive destruction in its wake.

Ten-Tails Fission

Almost like its own version of a Clone Technique, the Ten-Tails can break off small parts of its body into humanoid figures to attack foes with larger numbers. While sizes can vary, most of them appear to be as large as the average human, though some can reach the heights of monster summons.

Tenpenchii

Literally translating to “Natural Disaster Befalling Heaven and Earth”, when the Ten-Tails power is no longer being suppressed, it can disrupt the natural energy surrounding it and create a massive natural disaster featuring storms, lightning, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods all at once.

Jinchuuriki Form

Upon sealing the Ten Tailed Beast within himself with the Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal, Madara becomes its Jinchuuriki and gains an incredible boost in power, comparable to the original Sage of Six Paths. With it, he learns to use Six Paths Senjutsu, which powers-up his sensing technique and his regeneration. It also grants him the Truth-Seeking Balls, and should he have both Rinnegan and fly near the moon, it will awaken the Rinne Sharingan in his forehead. (Refer to all mentioned sections for details on their abilities)

The form's incredible power is also its greatest downfall however. Should the Ten Tailed Beast be extracted from Madara, he will be killed. This is how he ultimately meets his fate at the end of the series.

Scaling Explanations

The scaling for Madara is pretty straightforward. Even in his base form (well, Edo Tensei), he completely fodderized the Allied Shinobi Forces with just a few hand to hand and ninjutsu moves. He then went on to easily defeat all five Kage, put up a good match with Hashirama, and then he got his Jinchuuriki Sage of the Six Paths powers, which let him fight Eight Gates Might Guy (albeit he would’ve lost that hard if not for his regeneration), and both Naruto and Sasuke at the same time when they both had Six Paths Chakra. The only stuff he probably doesn’t scale to in the entire series at the peak of his power is some of the later Boruto stuff involving the Otsutsuki and full powered adult Naruto and Sasuke (and whatever the hell the alien chakra god thing they added into the story in recent chapters was, whenever that starts giving out feats).

Weaknesses

As chakra is a metaphysical energy that stems from the user’s own body, ninja can become very tired if they overuse it. Even jonin like Kakashi would be unable to move for weeks if they overtax their reserves and should push come to shove, losing too much chakra could possibly even result in death, even if it’s through one’s own usage. Chakra can also be absorbed by other individuals, leaving the target drained if too much is taken, but this is less of a problem for Madara who has his own chakra absorption techniques. It should be noted that Madara is immune to Ninjutsu thanks to this technique and Genjutsu thanks to his Sharingan and Rinnegan, so logically Taijutsu (or any other physical attack such as weapons) and Senjutsu are his main weaknesses. The main takeaway from this in terms of a VS match however is that should an opponent use an attack that does not rely on chakra (or a comparable power system like Ki), Madara would not be able to absorb it and would be forced to deal with more attacks than he’s used to. Chakra flow through the body can also be suppressed should certain organs and chakra points be damaged.

While the Sharingan’s copy abilities are impressive, it still has its limitations. It cannot copy kekkei genkai as these stem from an individual’s genetics, you obviously need to be able to actually see an opponent in order for it to work and its genjutsu can't be activated without eye contact with the target, which also makes it difficult to use when the individual is facing numerous foes at once. As the user gets weaker, movements are harder to read as well, and even if you can read your target's movements, it doesn't matter if you're still too slow to react to it. Despite being a manifestation of Madara’s chakra, the Susanoo still has solid mass and can be broken, melted, or even removed from the battlefield entirely if it takes enough damage, and it does not defend from sound attacks or anything else that could pass through its cloak. After Izanagi is used, that Sharingan eye loses its light and its abilities, and since Madara has already absorbed Hashirama’s cells it’s unlikely he can restore them a second time, as Danzou was unable to even after having Hashirama’s cells implanted in himself. The same applies to Izanami as well.

Speaking of which, while the exact limitations of Hashirama cells’ regenerative abilities are not explored, we know that complete disintegration will kill the individual, as shown by Obito’s death when he was stabbed by one of Kaguya’s Truth-Seeking Balls. Which makes sense, given that it stems from his cells. Whether complete molecular destruction is necessary is another question however, as the most damage we’ve seen someone survive is Madara getting sliced in half by Sasuke and getting half his face and body burnt off by Night Guy. He recovered from those within a few real-time moments.

For the Rinnegan, its ocular abilities are also messed with when vision is impaired and the more the Deva Path is used, the longer its cooldowns last. Some of its abilities, primarily the Human Path and Naraka Path also aren’t exactly meant for combat so much as for gathering information, hence why they aren’t really used outside of Nagato’s Six Paths of Pain, though of course that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to use them in such a manner. Truth-Seeking Balls also have a range limited to about 70 meters, and they can only really attack that which Madara can see, and it’s possible to resist their effect if you have Six Paths Chakra. Despite existing on a separate plane, Limbo Shadows can be detected/seen by those with extrasensory abilities, such as Naruto sensing it with Six Paths Senjutsu or Sasuke seeing them with his Rinnegan, suffer any damage the real Madara takes and will be forced to return to him after a period of time. The Infinite Tsukuyomi can also be resisted so long as one isn’t exposed to its light to any degree before it wears off and having the Ten Tailed Beast extracted from Madara's body will kill him, regardless of any healing abilities. And obviously, Madara will lose access to the Sharingan and Rinnegan’s abilities should they be destroyed or removed from his body.

Is there a character that could even possibly EVEN TOUCH Uchiha Madara? Let alone defeat him? And I'm not talking about Edo Tensei Uchiha Madara. I'm not talking about Gedou Rinne Tensei Uchiha Madara either. Hell, I'm not even talking about Juubi Jinchuuriki Gedou Rinne Tensei Uchiha Madara with the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and Rinnegan doujutsus (with the rikodou abilities and being capable of both Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi genjutsu), equipped with his Gunbai, a perfect Susano'o, control of the juubi and Gedou Mazou, with Hashirama Senju's DNA implanted in him so he has mokuton kekkei genkai and can perform yin yang release ninjutsu while being an expert in kenjutsu and taijutsu. I’m talking about Kono Yo no Kyūseishu Futarime no Rikudō Juubi Jinchuuriki Gedou Rinne Tensei Uchiha Madara with the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan (which is capable of Izanagi and Izanami), his two original Rinnegan (which grant him Chikushōdō, Shuradō, Tendō, Ningendō, Jigokudō, Gakidō, Gedō, Banshō Ten’in, Chibaku Tensei, Shinra Tensei, Tengai Shinsei and Banbutsu Sōzō) and a third Tomoe Rinnegan on his forehead, capable of using the Infinite Tsukuyomi Genjutsu, Katon, Fūton, Raiton, Doton, Suiton, Mokuton, Ranton, Inton, Yōton and even Onmyōton Jutsu, equipped with his Gunbai (capable of using Uchihagaeshi) and a Shakujō because he is a master in kenjutsu and taijutsu, a perfect Susano’o (that can use Yasaka no Magatama), control of both the Juubi and the Gedou Mazou, with Hashirama Senju’s DNA and face implanted on his chest, his four Rinbo Hengoku Clones guarding him and nine Gudōdama floating behind him AFTER he absorbed Senjutsu from the First Hokage, entered Rikudō Senjutsu Mode, cast Mugen Tsukuyomi on everybody and used Shin: Jukai Kōtan so he can use their Chakra while they are under Genjutsu.
