Character Analysis: Po(Feat Grand)

Background

Our story begins in a rural farming village within China’s Valley of Peace inhabited entirely by pandas. “Lotus” was born the son of Li Shan and his loving wife, and they lived a peaceful life in their peaceful home. But then, everything changed when Lord Shen of Gongmen City and his wolf army attacked. The ambitious young heir desired to rule over Gongmen City, China, and the entire world, and a Soothsayer had foretold that should he continue on this dark path, he would be stopped by a warrior of black and white: a panda.

Fearing any obstacles that could stand in his way, Shen decided that the only course was mass genocide against the pandas. As young Lotus saw his village burnt to the ground around him, he was saved by his parents as his mother ran away with him while his father stayed behind to cover them as they fled. After running for miles, Lotus’ mother finally dropped the young panda cub in a small radish box, before kissing her son goodbye and offering up her life to lead the wolves and peacock away from her child.

Don’t worry, things aren’t quite as dark from here on.

This box of radishes made its way to the backdoors of Mr. Ping’s Noodle Shop, only when the old goose went out to collect his newly delivered produce, he discovered that there were no radishes! Just a hungry, dirty, baby panda. Not wanting to leave the child on its own, Mr. Ping adopted the young panda, naming him Xiao Po Ping.

Po spent his life working for his dad’s noodle shop and was supposed to take it over in the future, but the young panda didn’t want to spend his life just on noodles. So then what did he want to spend it on? Po pondered this for a period of time, and upon seeing the Furious Five defeat the warrior Boar, he decided that kung fu was what he wanted to do. He spent years as a fanboy, hearing legends of numerous kung fu masters and warriors, and even collecting a number of action figures! As a big fat panda stuck in a noodle shop though, Po could never really do much except dream.

That all changed on the day of the Dragon Warrior ceremony. Master Oogway of the Jade Palace was to choose between the Furious Five who would be the Dragon Warrior, his true successor who would protect the world and bring forth a new era of kung fu. After being locked out of the ceremony, Po did everything he could to get in to see who the Dragon Warrior would be, even going so far as to shoot himself into the air with fireworks! This plan worked, except it also landed Po directly in the middle of Oogway choosing the Dragon Warrior, making him the one Oogway “chose”. Po was declared to be the Dragon Warrior, worthy of the Dragon Scroll!

This “decision” naturally upset Master Shifu, and Po naturally failed at his first few training attempts. But eventually, he and Shifu managed to work out their differences and trained together, developing his own form of martial arts. With these skills, and a new perspective of thinking from Mr. Ping, Po was able to unlock the “secrets” of the Dragon Scroll, and used his newfound abilities to defeat Tai Lung, making him truly recognized as the Dragon Warrior.

Po would go on to defend the Valley of Peace and the rest of China from several more threats from there as well. He and the Five would face Lord Shen and his Wolf Army during their conquest of China, saving the country and allowing Po to move on from his traumatic past. He also defeated Oogway’s old friend turned corrupt enemy Kai, mastering Chi - the energy that exists in all beings in the universe - in the process and becoming a fully realized-Dragon Warrior, the Dragon Master, and Oogway’s true successor. Po would go on to teach an entirely new generation of students the powers of the old generation, from the citizens of the Valley of Peace to the children of the Panda Village, uniting both the future and past of kung fu - the yin and yang, black and white of a panda.

Experience

Po has been the Dragon Warrior for an undisclosed number of years now. We know that he was in his 20s when he started and is still in his 20s now, so it’s been less than a decade at least. He was trained by Master Shifu, who Po himself has described as “the greatest kung fu teacher in all of China”. However, due to his “unique” body shape, Po wasn’t able to be trained like the five were, and instead developed his own technique for combat. He has also trained to use several different weapon fighting styles, such as kenjutsu, bojutsu and nunchaku. He has also been taught several different kung fu techniques from other masters, such as some of the Twelve Impossible Moves from Fenghuang, and Bushido from Yijiro.

While Po is not officially a member of the team, he is considered the leader of the Furious Five, as well as their teacher after Shifu retires from the position in the third movie. Po is tasked with being the new teacher to the Furious Five, and also teaches the Pandas and many other citizens of the Valley of Peace how to harness their Chi, most notably the panda children in the village who gain the power of the Four Constellations.

Equipment

Yin Yang Staff

The Yin Yang Staff was originally wielded by Oogway after he ascended to the Spirit Realm and became enlightened. When Po defeated Kai and realized his full potential as the Dragon Warrior and a master of Chi, Oogway presented him with the Yin-Yang Staff as a symbol of the panda being his true successor who had managed to unite the past and future of kung fu.

It’s a lot more than just a walking stick though! When Oogway fought Kai in the Spirit Realm, he used it to write kanji letters which could be used as projectile attacks and creating a giant yin-yang shield made of chi. After Po was given it, he used it to return to the Mortal Realm.

Misc.

  • Nunchucks: Po was given a pair of nunchucks from his dad for the winter fest one year. While Po has been shown to be quite capable in using them, he rarely carries them into battle.

  • Staffs/Spears: Po doesn’t carry bo staffs with him, but he has very often used makeshift staffs from pieces of bamboo and other objects to fight. Of all the weapons Po is trained in, this is the one we see him use the most.

  • Swords: Of all the weapons Po is trained in, swords are the one he is shown using the least. He has still shown to be very competent and capable in using them however.

  • Shurikens: Small throwing stars that can be used as a projectile attack. Unlike all these other weapons however, Po has been shown to actually carry them on his person into battle before.

Abilities

Panda Style/Dragon Style

Kung Fu is a form of unarmed Chinese martial arts known for its trickery and quickness. In the world of Kung Fu Panda, it was created by Master Oogway several centuries ago at the Pool of Sacred Tears when he unlocked the power of harmony and focus. There are several different styles of kung fu in order to allow individuals to focus on fighting styles that take advantage of their physical strengths and compensate for their physical limitations.

Due to his “unique” body shape, Po wasn’t able to learn kung fu like many other masters were, and so he created his own kung fu style known as Panda Style. Panda Style takes full advantage of Po’s physique, relying on his belly for a defensive approach rather than an offensive one. He typically avoids making the first move in combat, and instead relies on his speed and durability to wear down an opponent before striking with devastating force.

Weapons Proficiency

While Po does not typically carry weapons on his person (at least not until he gets his staff from Oogway), he has been shown to be skilled in the use of swords, bo staffs/spears and nunchucks. Of the three, he is most commonly seen training with and using a staff, often using broken bamboo trees as makeshift weapons in combat to take on hordes of enemies.

Twelve Impossible Moves

The Twelve Impossible Moves are legendary kung fu techniques which are known for being incredibly difficult to use. Po has shown use of at least three of these techniques.

Thundering Wind Hammer

The Thundering Wind Hammer is a ball of energy that the user briefly charges up by spinning around, and then throws at their target, similar to a Hadouken (4:35). There’s an extra part of the technique that one can learn in order to deflect it as well (18:40).

Mongolian Fireball

As the name implies, the user launches a fireball at their foe (19:45). It has a slight blackhole effect and can suck in small nearby objects to destroy them.

Unnamed Slicing Technique

Fenghuang teaches Po an unnamed technique in which the user slices up parts of a structure and then launches them at their target (19:15). They used it to cut up one of the columns in the Jade Palace.

Golden Lotus Clap

By announcing “Golden Lotus Clap” and then clapping his hands together, Po lets out a golden mist that renders anyone who sees it blind (19:03). The technique must be performed a second time in order to undo its effects. In order to defend against this technique, you must simply close your eyes. Even the user has to do this if they don’t want to be blinded, which Po can forget to do himself.

Paralyzing Touch Point

A technique in which Po touches a target in several different spots, sending ripples throughout their body. This paralyzes them and makes them unable to move anything except their eyes. After an hour, the paralysis becomes permanent. He used this technique on Mantis by mistake (8:55).

Paralyzing Shoulder Touch

By hitting certain pressure points in a target’s shoulder, Po can knock them unconscious (17:55). He used this technique on Tigress when she intended to “avenge” Master Prawn, as Po intended to avenge him himself.

Bushido

Bushido is a meditation technique used by the Prawn Clan of Japan. By removing all thoughts of “I” and “me” and focusing solely on “what must be done”, Po can slow down his perception of time, to the point where the super fast Yijiro appeared to move at a crawl. Po used this technique while battling Kira Kozu of the Kozumoto Clam Clan in order to keep up with and defend against his incredible speed and small stature (20:40).

Silken Moon Touch

The Silken Moon Touch was created by Master Wushen. By taking a voluntary vow of silence and focusing incredibly hard, Po performs a number of poses and can then simply touch his opponent and send them flying with a huge blast of energy that briefly darkens the nearby area. He used this move to defeat Temutai and all of his minions in a single attack (22:10).

Wuxi Finger Hold

Created by Master Wuxi in the third dynasty, the Wuxi Finger Hold involves grabbing the opponent’s finger between the user’s index finger and thumb and holding their pinky up. Upon flexing their pinky down, a massive ripple of Chi energy is released as the target is sent to the Spirit Realm. Despite never being taught it, Po figured out how to perform this technique in the first movie and used it to defeat Tai Lung

The only flaw of the Wuxi Finger Hold is that due to its nature of sending mortals to the spirit realm, it doesn’t work on opponents who are spiritual in nature, such as Kai. This can be worked around however, as Po can grab an opponent and use the technique on himself, dragging them to the Spirit Realm with him.

Inner Peace

Inner peace is a meditation technique, stated by Shifu to be one of Master Oogway’s final teachings, and can only be mastered by someone who has “found their own path”. Some learn it by fasting for years and years, like Oogway did, while others learn it through pain and suffering, like Po did. Upon learning of his past, Po felt the sadness and pain of having lost his parents and entire village, but came to accept that the beginning of his story didn’t define him, but the rest of his story did, achieving inner peace.

With inner peace, one can harness the energy flow of the universe. Shifu and Po used it to catch and redirect water droplets without breaking them, and Po used it to catch and redirect Shen’s zen ball cannons, which were giant slabs of metal set on fire

Hero’s Chi

The Hero’s Chi is a powerful life force bestowed once a generation. Oogway had the Hero’s Chi himself, and then it was passed to Po. However, in order to fully become a master of Chi, one must be a master of self. With it, Po can shoot beams of energy from his hands and feet and increase his speed as well. When Oogway had it, he could cast bright light from his body and use it to levitate/fly, and Po is capable of the same. Kai also showed the ability to power up certain attacks by focusing his Chi into a certain part of his body.

The Hero’s Chi can also be used to seal away demons such as Ke-Pa. Po can also use it to draw the outline of a giant chi dragon and then use it for flight and combat, as demonstrated in his fight with Kai in the Spirit Realm. The pandas of panda village have used it for minor telekinetic abilities, stopping shuriken stars in midair. It can also be used to heal and empower others, and fend off mind control techniques. Characters such as Kai and Jindiao have also shown the ability to absorb other people’s chi and take it for themselves.

Po also used his Chi in the Spirit Realm to transform into a giant dragon. This was likely due to the Realms nature of being “defined by those within it” however, as Po reverts back to his normal panda body upon leaving the Spirit Realm.

The Hero’s Chi can be overused and drained in combat however. It can also be drained by special items such as Ke-Pa’s funnel.

Miscellaneous Abilities

Accelerated Learning

Po is a very quick learner when it comes to combat abilities. Over the course of just a few days, Master Shifu taught him enough kung fu that Po was able to defeat prodigious Tai Lung who had just broken out of Chorh-Gom Prison and defeated the Furious Five all at once. Po even learned the Wuxi Finger Hold just by “figuring it out”, despite never even seeing the attack be performed.

Po learned several kung fu techniques such as the Mongolian Fireball and Golden Lotus Clap by just seeing them a few times, the Mind-Fluttering Finger Slip just by reading a scroll about it, the Thundering Wind Hammer by complete accident, and inner peace at an incredibly young age in comparison to most masters. Shifu also remarked that while it took him years to master chi enough that he could make a flower bloom, Po managed to perform much greater feats in just a few moments of being in the Spirit Realm and realizing who he was.

Chao Wa Punch Kick

The Chao Wa Punch Kick is a nerve attack technique. By striking precisely at the intersection of the medial metatarsal and the abdomen, a target can be frozen in place and incapable of moving. Though somehow, Shifu managed to perform the move on a practice dummy. While Po was never shown using the technique himself, it stands to reason that he has learned it, given that both Shifu and Mr. Ping performed it.

Mind-Fluttering Finger Slip*

Through a series of hand movements, Po could erase the short-term memory of anyone who saw him perform the technique. If he used it enough times on a given target, it would even begin to erase long-term memory. This proved to be a problem when he used it on the Furious Five too many times, and after restoring their memories with the Memory Restoration Clay, so in order to make sure he didn’t abuse the technique anymore, Po used the Finger Slip on himself to forget the move and can no longer perform it.

Wings of Light*

The Wings of Light is one of the Five Mystic Kung Fu Secrets. As the name may imply, it allows the user to fly with wings made out of light. The technique was known by Master Yao, but this knowledge was pulled from his brain by one of Taotai’s machines. Po learned the technique when he ate Taotai’s knowledge cookie for the ability, but he gave it up after defeating the villains in order to give it back to Master Yao.

Scaling Explanations

The scaling for Po is pretty straightforward since he’s pretty much confirmed to be one of, if not, the most powerful character in Kung Fu Panda. He has managed to fight and defeat all of the Furious Five and Shifu, as well as Tai Lung and Shen, and that was before he had his Hero’s Chi. With it, he scales to the higher up characters like Ke-Pa, Kai and Jindiao, all of which Po has defeated.

Po should also scale to the Four Constellations. They all use Hero’s Chi, and Po is the one who trains the new generation of the Four Constellations. Po also defeated Jindiao who was able to fight all four of them.

Weaknesses

Po can be a pretty gullible and dimwitted guy for the most part, and can be tricked fairly easily or just come up with some really dumb ideas. As recalled by Tigress, he once had the idea to cook noodles in his stomach by eating them raw and then drinking boiling water, which Po remarked “didn’t work”. This mostly applies outside of combat though, as he can come up with some quick strategies on the fly to get out of sticky situations.

Po’s position as the Dragon Warrior can also get to his head sometimes, making him arrogant, lazy and not bother trying to give his all to a fight if he doesn’t think the adversary is worth the effort. He generally learns his lesson after enough punches to the gut though.

While it can take a lot of effort and power to do so, Po’s chi can be drained, be it from overuse in combat or by having it sucked out through special abilities or tools. While this will not kill him, it will leave him incapacitated and incapable of using any of his abilities that rely on chi.

  1. I am sorry but how is po gonna scale to planet level shit when he is hurt by jade tusk , pebble sand other foders? In paws of destint he literally lost all of his chi and still fought the same way before because it was abundantly clear chi didnt increase his physicality. He was literally saved by the shield from a huge epxlsoion but you are telling his duarability scales to that? But iron fis touching through colossus or injuring namor is not good enough scaling?
