Character Analysis: Blake Belladonna(Feat DJtiki)

Blake Belladonna

Background

For as long as Blake Belladonna remembered, she was a part of Menagerie’s White Fang, an organization set to bring about equality between humanity and Faunus, to which her heritage is owed to. A faunus, in layman’s terms, are a human-like species that possess animal qualities. Blake is a cat faunus. During her early years, she took part in peaceful protests and boycotts under her father, Ghira Belladonna, the leader of the White Fang at the time. Eventually, Ghira would step down due to pressure from another key member, Sienna Khan, who opted for more violent methods.

Boycotts and protests turned into staged attacks and riots. While Ghira and Blake’s mother, Kali, left, Blake decided to work under her mentor, Adam Taurus. At first Blake had been content, but Adam’s extreme ideals of senseless violence eventually unnerved Blake. During a mission to disrupt Atlesian cargo, Blake separated herself from Adam (literally) and ran from the White Fang. She eventually got accepted into Beacon Academy, an academy for training warriors that hunt down Grimm and protect humanity. She was aiming to become a Huntress of justice.

Through years of self-loathing and attempting to write her wrongdoings, she finally found a place to belong under Team RWBY, led by… Ruby Rose (yes it does cause confusing). She was now working with friends who had different ideals and lives from her. Ruby had more pure motivations of protecting the people and lifting spirits. Yang had been headstrong and adamant. Weiss was even an (ex) heiress to a family name the White Fang had long since targeted.

After the Fall of Beacon, Blake would return home (with fellow faunus friend, Sun, following her) to eventually overcome her own self-loathing, reconnect with her family, dissolve Menagerie’s violent White Fang group, save her long friend from corruption, and even escape Adam’s clutches. Moreover than anything, Blake is a huntress who will do anything in her power to fight corruption.

Weapons & Equipment

Gambol Shroud

Gambol Shroud is Blake’s weapon of choice. It’s officially classified as a Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe" (VBCS). It comes with a couple of modes, each with its own strengths. It also serves as a conduit for Blake’s aura (more on that later). It can change from a clever sword, to a katana, and to a gun. And it’s attached with a black ribbon.

Pistol - It’s a semi-automatic pistol that can shoot dust bullets. It has a blade at its end, meaning Blake can use it to stab Grimm, people, or other surfaces when she’s not using its firing capabilities.

Katana - Exactly what it says on the tin… It’s a sword. It’s a longer range and more effective way to slice through things. Paired with Blake’s strength, it can easily tear through steel, even derived from Atlasian tech.

Kusarigama - It’s a black ribbon attached to the katana’s hilt. When Gambol Shroud is in its pistol form, she can use the blade to attach to any surface and swing freely. It also extends her range by a fair bit. It comes with the added benefit of being able to ensnare and disorient enemies. By my calculations, the ribbon can stretch about 100 meters long!

Sheath - The sheath for Gambol Shroud also has a bladed edge that can be used just the same as the other parts of her weapon. If the katana breaks, Blake can still use it to fight.

Dust Bullets

Blake doesn’t have traditional bullets in her gun. Instead, in the world of Remnant, people use Dust. Harnessed from nature, dust is the physical embodiment of nature (taking form in crystals). There are four primary types: ice, lightning, fire, and wind. When they are mixed, more types are created. She possesses fire, ice, lightning, earth, violet and gravity types. As far as Dust Bullets are concerned, Blake is fancy to two types besides generic concussive blasts:

Fire - Blake shoots fire dust to make fireballs. They create fire and burn anything on contact.

Ice - The opposite, Blake freezes things on contact with small ice blasts.

Powers & Abilities

Faunus Heritage

Because Blake is a faunus, she is biologically granted a few capabilities a normal human wouldn’t have:

  • Superhuman Strength and Speed - she’s already stronger than any average person, being able to kick down giant men like Hazel, and catch fellow faunus like Sun. By being a cat person, she’s incredibly agile- leaping several stories with relative ease and running faster than 35mph.

  • Night Vision - Faunus have impeccable vision in the dark, except in camouflage cases.

  • Animal Tendencies - less of a superpower, but faunus take on the trait of the animal they are based on. In Blake’s case, she’s a cat, so she’s a bit standoffish, hates dogs, loves tuna, etc.

  • Acute Hearing - Blake’s cat instincts and biology gives her improved hearing even in hearing distant sounds normal humans cannot pick up to.

Aura

Aura is the manifestation of one’s soul. Every living being has one. But only a percent few are able to harness it to its fullest extent. Once someone’s aura is “unlocked”, they can use it defensively to passively block attacks, project outward for offense and defense, or utilize it to activate dust. It even heals injuries over time (it’s a slow acting healing factor, serious hits will still kill them). Though there’s a lot more to it than that.

Normally, a person on Remnant can still get put down the same as any real life human, but with aura it can block attacks that would normally kill them. Everyone has a finite amount of Aura, though they vary in quantities from one person to the next. Once an aura is depleted, that person can no longer take advantage of the strengths Aura grants them (repelling fatal attacks and use of their semblances). Aura can also be completely bypassed if the attack they took was too strong.

Semblance: Shadow

Think of it as a superpower that most aura users have. In most cases, it’s a unique ability they possess. Not everyone awakens to a Semblance and it’s usually triggered through something eventful happening to that person’s life. Blake’s came about from her tendency to run away.

In Blake’s case, she expels a shadow-like clone of herself to take hits for her or repel her around the battlefield. The clones take the form of the pose Blake was just in as she activated the ability. The Shadow does not take much expense of her own aura and she has shown able to make several in a short time. It’s mainly used for evasive maneuvers.

Overtime, they evolved from being shadows to convincing decoys that stay in effect for long periods of time. She can even combine the shadows with Dust to give them different properties.

Fire - Creates a clone imbued in fire that explodes on contact.

Ice - It freezes things in place that are within range of her shadow once activated.

Stone - Acts a heavy stone shield that can block most attacks.

Lightning - Similar to the ice shadow, but it instead stuns enemies.

Gravity - It creates a haze clone that blocks other people’s views and lingers for a while.

Should be comparable to the following characters and the following feats.

Weaknesses

  • Unlike Yang, Blake is agile, but decently frail, she isn’t privy to taking too many hits without her aura being disrupted or broken.

  • If her aura breaks, she can no longer utilize her Shadow semblance.

  • While she can fight for a while, she has a limited supply of dust rounds she can use as bullets or in combination of her semblance.

  • Incapable of revealing her feelings to Yang.
