Character Analysis: Shoto Tororoki (Feat kirsche)

Note: A lot of these notes here were done before the new movie was available and MHA is obviously an ongoing manga. We have kept up with both as chapters have come up and the new movie, but some info from them might not be listed here.

Shoto Todoroki

Amazon.com: Kyoko Vinyl My Hero Academia - Todoroki Shoto Anime ...

Name: Shoto Todoroki (occasionally romanized as “Shouto”)

Hero Name: Shoto (real original, I know)

Age: 15

Height: 1.76 m (5' 9¼")

Family: Endeavor, Rei Todoroki, three older siblings.

Background: Shoto is the fourth child of Enji Todoroki, better known for his Hero name: Endeavor. Endeavor is a high-ranking Pro Hero whose goal for a long time was to have a perfect child with a highly versatile and powerful Quirk, and when Shoto was born and his Half-Cold Half-Hot Quirk manifested itself at age five, Endeavor realized he finally got the child he wanted. He shut Shoto away from the rest of his family, and the world in general, and focused greatly on training him, but Endeavor’s training was too harsh for a small child like Shoto, and his mother was suffering because of this, but Endeavor wasn’t taking any advice from his wife, so he beat her in front of Shoto. Naturally, Rei’s mental health worsened, and this led to her dumping boiling water on the left side of Shoto’s face because it reminded her of Endeavor’s violent behavior. Rei was sent to a mental institution, and Shoto resumed his training, but he developed a great hatred for his father. Shoto had always wanted to be a Hero thanks to the influence of great celebrities like All Might, but after seeing all the suffering his mom had been put through due to Endeavor, Shoto’s goal became to surpass his father as a Hero without ever using the fiery side of his Quirk. After joining the U.A. Hero Academy through a recommendation, Shoto came to realize that he was not a slave to his bloodline, and that he should be using the full extent of his powers without feeling guilt.

Abilities

Half-Cold Half-Hot: Shoto’s Quirk. It allows him to create flames and ice from each half of his body. With his left side, he generates fire, and with his right, ice.

Ice Manipulation: The main focus of Shoto’s powers. Normally, he uses it to attack by creating ice waves that travel across the floor while generating spiked structures in their wake. He has also used it to freeze the opponent’s feet to immobilize them. He can use it to create structures that allow him to slide and increase his mobility. He can use it to freeze opponents with great precision. Freezing opponents like this for an extended amount of time can kill them through necrosis, and this severely weakens their durability, with a notable case being Noumu’s flesh falling apart on its own seconds after being frozen. The exact temperature of Shoto’s ice is not known, but given the aforementioned properties, it’s possible that it’s at Absolute Zero or close to it, as that temperature causes molecular structures to collapse on their own. However, Shoto is not immune to ice, and he needs to use his left side to heat his body up after extended use of his ice powers, or his movements will be severely hindered by frostbite.

Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall: A special move where Shoto generates an absolutely massive ice spike to encase or damage the foe. Normally reaches the size of a small building, but when he’s pissed, he can make the spike half as large as a colosseum.

Fire Manipulation: The other half of Shoto’s power. It lacks the finesse of Shoto’s ice because of his previous refusal to use this power, but he’s still capable of performing deadly attacks with it. On an offensive position, Shoto simply shoots flames out of his left half. On a defensive position, he uses it to heat up his own body to avoid frostbite, or to melt the ice he has already created as a way to control the battlefield. At the current point of the story, Shoto’s flames are strong enough to rival his father’s, whose Prominence Burn attack is capable of burning things at a level that allows him to bypass regeneration and durability. However, using the full power of his flames severely tires him out, and can even knock him out, as if he was suffering from a heat syncope.

Wall of Flames: Shoto creates a massive burst of flames that surrounds a large area around him. This serves as both defense and offense.

Flashfire Fist: Shoto accesses the full power of his flames in an attempt to imitate his father. He is currently inexperienced with the technique and hasn’t fully grasped the ins and outs behind it, as it can easily knock him out. To compensate for the immense heat, he also bumps up the cooling factor of his Quirk.

Flashfreeze Heatwave: By using his ice powers to freeze the air and then releasing a burst of flames, Shoto causes a thermal shock to occur, causing the air to expand and violently combust.

Feats

Strength & Attack Potency (Ice and Fire feats included here)

Yet another big ice wall. (I’m noticing a pattern here 🤔)

Speed & Reactions

Durability & Stamina

Skill, Intelligence & Others

Passed the Battle Trial test.

Worked together with Yaoyorozu to capture Aizawa during one of the exams.

Contributed to the rescue of Katsuki Bakugo from the League of Villains.

Passed the remedial license course to make up for his failure at the Provisional License Test.

Scaling

Izuku has jumped over one of Bakugo’s nitroglycerin explosions and Todoroki has outsped Izuku in numerous occasions in the Sports Festival Arc, and by the Hero Killer Arc. Shoto was portrayed to be at least on par with Izuku’s Full Cowl power-up.

Additionally, Bakugo has an impressive feat where he causes a large crater.

Weaknesses

Using the full extent of his fire powers knocks him unconscious.

Abusing his ice powers can cause him to suffer from frostbite.
