Character Analysis: Dumbledore

Note: Though the original novels are obviously the primary source, this blog will also include information from the movies, video games, published screenplays, Pottermore, official website, interviews, and various other official secondary sources. Most if not all of these sources do not contradict the original material in any overly meaningful way, and those that do have been excluded.

Born in Mould-on-the-Wold, England in the late 1800’s, Albus Dumbledore was a prodigy from a young age. Attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, one of the greatest magical institutions in the Wizarding World, he could soon perform magic that many adult wizards and witches had never seen before, and on top of his skill, he possessed remarkable charisma and a genius intellect. Those who knew him believed that he was destined for greatness.

However, his home life was considerably less pleasant. When he was little, his younger sister, Ariana, was attacked and left mentally scarred by a group of Muggle boys, and his father Percival was sentenced to prison for retaliating against them. His mother, Kendra, sought to keep their family secluded from others after this, and his brother Aberforth became bitter, preferring to settle disagreements with force rather than words. Eventually, later in Albus’ time at school, a magical outburst from Ariana ended up killing Kendra, leaving Albus the head of a broken family.

However, Albus would not let any of this hinder him too much, as his young mind was steeped with ambition. After his time at Hogwarts, he came into contact with a prodigy of similar talents to his own, Gellert Grindelwald. The two quickly became best friends, and even more than that, falling in love and making plans for the future together. Gellert believed that wizards had a right to dominate Muggles “for the greater good”, and Albus, blinded by his own feelings and bitter about the familial responsibilities that he had never asked for, quickly became taken in by this ideology, believing - as so many others had before him - that he was destined for greatness.

Albus’ and Gellert’s romance wouldn’t last, however, and Albus soon found himself confronted by Aberforth, who angrily intended to stop Albus from leaving, as Ariana needed him. Gellert cast a spell to torture Aberforth, laughing at his pain, and Albus stepped in, realizing the kind of horrible person that Grindelwald was. Soon enough, a three-way duel erupted between them, which only concluded when a stray spell accidentally struck Ariana, killing her. Grindelwald departed, Aberforth angrily blamed Albus, and Albus was crushed under the weight of his own guilt, his ideologies and ambition thoroughly shattered.

In the following years, Dumbledore became an educator at Hogwarts, a far cry from the grand revolutionary that he had once envisioned himself as. He had learned his lesson: that power was not for him. Meanwhile, Grindelwald began to amass an army of followers who shared his ideals, intent on fulfilling his dream of Muggle subjugation. He even acquired a powerful magical artifact called the Elder Wand, which he and Albus had been fascinated by years prior. Eventually, though Dumbledore had become a staunch pacifist in the years following Ariana’s death, the threat of Grindelwald became too great, and he was forced to step in and combat his old lover directly. The two fought and, in a legendary duel considered to be the greatest in history, Dumbledore prevailed, ending Grindelwald’s ambitions forever, and taking the Elder Wand for himself - not to use it for conquest, but to tame it, and prevent its power from falling into the wrong hands.

Years later, however, a new Dark Lord would rise. In a small London orphanage, Dumbledore came to meet with a young wizard named Tom Riddle, and offered him admission to Hogwarts. Riddle agreed, and soon proved himself to be a prodigy nearly of Dumbledore’s own caliber. It turned out, however, that Riddle saw wizardkind as superior to Muggles, just as Grindelwald had before him, and after graduating Hogwarts, he set out to gather followers and discover the secrets of immortality. Eventually, Riddle took on a new name - Lord Voldemort - and began a campaign to conquer the planet in the name of wizard superiority.

Recognizing the threat that Voldemort posed, Dumbledore formed an organization to combat him, the Order of the Phoenix. In a war to end all wars, wizardkind fought back against Voldemort’s armies, but was unable to defeat him for good. As he had with Grindelwald, however, Dumbledore hesitated to fight Voldemort directly, and Voldemort was not keen to challenge Dumbledore either, as out of every wizard in the world, Dumbledore’s power alone frightened him.

Soon enough, however, Voldemort would be defeated not by Dumbledore, but by an infant child, as had been prophesied beforehand. When he turned his wand on the infant Harry Potter, who unbeknownst to him had been granted magical protections from his mother, the Killing Curse rebounded upon Voldemort, destroying his body and leaving him nothing but a disembodied soul wandering the world. After this, Dumbledore would take steps to protect Harry from Voldemort’s spirit and his followers, as well as create a plan to defeat Voldemort, should he ever return. Over a decade later, his fears were realized, and Voldemort returned greater and more terrible than ever before, starting a new Wizarding War and resuming his attempts to conquer the world.

All was not lost, however, as Dumbledore had a plan. He had deduced the method through which Voldemort had become nearly immortal - by placing pieces of his own soul into various magical objects. Together with Harry, Dumbledore would seek to find all of Voldemort’s Horcruxes and destroy them, leaving him mortal once again. This included Harry himself, who had been imbued with a piece of Voldemort’s soul upon the latter’s defeat years earlier; luckily however, upon his return, Voldemort had taken a bit of Harry’s blood for himself, to nullify the protections from Harry’s mother. In doing so, he had tethered Harry to life for as long as he himself was alive, and so any attempt to kill Harry would merely destroy the Horcrux within him, leaving Harry unharmed. Dumbledore had all of this figured out years in advance, and planned around it, orchestrating Voldemort’s final defeat far ahead of time.

(It all sounds very convoluted, but it mostly makes sense in context)

However, Dumbledore would not be able to see his plan through to the end. Cursed to die by one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, a magical ring, he planned his own murder - with his murderer, Severus Snape - a full year in advance, intending for Snape to gain ownership of the Elder Wand, and for him to become Voldemort’s most trusted follower, having killed the one whom Voldemort was most afraid of. This was a key part of his plan for Voldemort’s defeat, and though parts of it went wrong, it all… mostly worked out. Snape died because of the stuff that went wrong though, rip bozo.

Anyway, in the end, Dumbledore was never afraid to die even for a moment. He believed that to the well-organized mind, death was merely “the next great adventure”. Though he had made many mistakes early in his life, he was able to recognize when he wasn’t the right man for the job, and entrusted Voldemort’s defeat to the next generation, before departing from the world on his own terms - though, he did have one last spiritual heart-to-heart with Harry when everything was almost said and done. Even in death, Dumbledore’s legacy was befitting of one of the most powerful and influential wizards the world had ever known.

Experience

Having over 100 years of experience and magical knowledge, a genius intellect, and prodigious natural talent, Dumbledore is the most knowledgeable and skilled wizard in his world.

He had at least seven years of formal instruction as a student of Hogwarts, and in the time since has spent decades as a professor of Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts, and later the school’s headmaster. He has experience fighting and leading in three separate magical wars, one against Grindelwald and two against Voldemort, and he is considered a wizard of unparalleled ability, to the point where no one on Earth - and potentially in all of history - would be a match for him. Even Voldemort, whose knowledge of magic is acknowledged by Dumbledore to be potentially more extensive than any wizard alive, was no match for Dumbledore in skill; according to Dumbledore’s colleague McGonagall, though Voldemort may possess magical powers that Dumbledore does not, this is solely due to the fact that Dumbledore is “too noble” to use them, not due to any lack of capability.

His intelligence is great enough to create convoluted plans years ahead of time, acting as the mastermind behind Voldemort’s final defeat, despite the fact that the majority of the events leading up to it took place after Dumbledore’s death. The blood connection which allowed Harry to survive Voldemort’s curse at the end of the series is something that Dumbledore planned out three years ahead of time. He is also a world-renowned scholar, famous for his contributions to potion-making and alchemy, among other things. At one point, he was seemingly even smart enough to figure out that Harry and Hermione had gone back in time hours in advance, stalling Cornelius Fudge in order to give them time to free Buckbeak, despite having no discernable means of knowing that they had gone back in time to begin with. He just… knew. Somehow. Because he’s Dumbledore, I guess.

Arsenal

Elder Wand

Wands in Harry Potter are objects through which a wizard channels their magical power. Wands are somewhat sentient, choosing their owner, and as such only bestow their full power onto someone whom they recognize as their master.

Dumbledore’s wand is functionally similar to any other wand, but it is also remarkable. Made of elder wood and with a Thestral’s tail hair as its core, it is the Elder Wand, an ancient magical artifact and one of the three Deathly Hallows. Also known as the Deathstick and the Wand of Destiny, it is much more powerful than any ordinary wand in the hand of its chosen master, to the point where it is considered unbeatable - though even in-universe this is clearly an exaggeration, as Dumbledore himself defeated it with a normal wand. The Elder Wand’s allegiance is ever-changing, and it will unfailingly dedicate itself to a master who has won it from its previous owner. This can be achieved through killing the owner, defeating them in battle, or simply disarming them against their will, which is how Draco Malfoy unknowingly won the wand from Dumbledore at the end of the latter’s life.

Deluminator

Dumbledore possesses a magical cigarette lighter of his own design, which has several magical functions. Its main use is absorbing light from the vicinity, and later releasing the light outward (either returning to its original location, or manifesting as balls of light floating in the air, in the event that the original light source is no longer present). However, it also possesses several other loosely-explained applications, such as leading Ron back to Harry and Hermione when he wanted to find them, or dissipating the mirror dimension that Dumbledore created in his fight with Credence.

Pocketwatch

Dumbledore possesses a magical pocket watch which has planet symbols moving around the edges instead of numbers. The exact manner in which this watch functions is unknown, but from it, Dumbledore is seemingly able to tell the time, as well as track the location of other people.

Fawkes

Fawkes is Dumbledore’s pet phoenix, whom he can summon to his side at any time he chooses. This is a result of Dumbledore’s bloodline; a phoenix will come before any Dumbledore in need to assist them. Fawkes possesses limited pyrokinesis, healing tears which can heal otherwise-incurable wounds, teleportation, and flight. His beak and talons are sharp weapons, able to gouge out the eyes of Salazar Slytherin’s Basilisk, nullifying its sight-based petrification ability. Being a phoenix, Fawkes also has the ability to be reborn from the ashes when he dies, and has shielded Dumbledore from fatal attacks in combat, before being reborn as a baby moments later.

Abilities

Wizard Physiology

Wizards are established to be more resilient than ordinary Muggles. They can withstand ailments more easily due to subtly different physiology, have longer life spans, and are resistant to most non-magical illnesses - though magically-inflicted afflictions are more difficult to cure. Moreover, wizards are naturally resistant to things like illusions and memory manipulation, which can fool Muggles but have no effect on those with magical abilities. For instance, Hogwarts would appear as a decrepit ruin to any Muggle who stumbled across it, but wizards can see it just fine. Wizards have even been completely unaffected by a memory-erasing storm which mind-wiped the entirety of New York City.

Magic (Overview)

Magic in Harry Potter is a supernatural force controlled by a wizard, witch, or magical creature, which alters the world around them in some manner. Largely speaking, Harry Potter is in the middle between a hard and soft magic system, meaning that there are some established rules for what can or can’t be done, but this isn’t always the case, and the story does not always provide a completely detailed explanation of what these rules are.

Generally speaking, spells are cast using a specific wand movement and/or incantation, which achieves a specific desired effect; however, skilled wizards can cast magic without any need for an incantation, or even a wand (see the Wandless Magic section below). That said, individual spells still have specific effects, though many spells can be modified to alter the effects in varying ways.

In terms of specific limitations, it is impossible to (completely) resurrect the dead, and it is impossible to create food from nothing. Magically-inflicted maladies and injuries are also much more difficult to repair than normal ones, even when using magic to treat them. Beyond that, the biggest limitations are simply the individual wizard’s knowledge and spellcasting ability; if they do not know how to achieve a specific effect with magic, they will not be able to do so.

Wandless Magic

Contrary to popular belief, skilled wizards such as Dumbledore do not actually require a wand to use magic, with Dumbledore in particular semi-frequently forgoing the use of one. A wand helps the wizard to channel and direct their magical abilities, but is not required, and skilled enough wizards can dispense with them entirely. Even some student-level wizards have shown to be capable of carrying out entire duels without wands, with no apparent decrease in power or spell variety.

Spells & Other Magic (Explicitly Demonstrated)

The following is a list of spells and magic types that Dumbledore has explicitly demonstrated throughout the course of the series and in secondary media.

Spells & Other Magic (Extrapolated)

The following is a list of other spells demonstrated in the series, which Dumbledore himself has not explicitly shown, but should be capable of doing. As the most skilled and knowledgeable wizard in the world, it would be unreasonable to suggest that Dumbledore could not reasonably perform the vast majority (if not all) of the known spells, especially given his comparability to Voldemort, whose knowledge of magic is stated to exceed anyone else.

This list will be excluding spells that Dumbledore clearly shouldn’t be aware of, such as the ones invented by Snape, and specific magical abilities that require more than knowledge or skill to attain.

Dark Magic

The following is a short list of extremely dark magic that Dumbledore could potentially be able to use, but would not use in-character. It has been stated that his morals are the only thing keeping him from having all the same powers as Voldemort, indicating that he would be capable of using such spells. Additionally, it has been indicated that he would at minimum be capable of using the Killing Curse, as Snape at one point believed that Dumbledore was going to kill him with it (though, obviously, he would never do so in-character).

Feats

Overall

  • Widely considered to be the greatest sorcerer in the world

  • Defeated Grindelwald in their legendary duel

  • Founded the Order of the Phoenix, and led them in two Wizarding Wars

  • Received Order of Merlin, First Class

  • Discovered the twelve uses of dragon’s blood

  • Worked on alchemy with Nicolas Flamel

  • Defeated Credence Barebone with minimal difficulty

  • Easily knocked out and apprehended Barty Crouch Jr.

  • Overwhelmed Voldemort in their fight and forced him to retreat

  • Has possessed all three Deathly Hallows

  • Orchestrated Voldemort’s final defeat over the course of several decades

Strength

SCALING

Speed

SCALING

Durability

  • Wizards fairly commonly survive spells from each other, suggesting their durability to be somewhat relative to their output. That being said, this is arguably inconsistent narratively and would not apply to the highest-end feats, as top tier characters like Dumbledore and Voldemort have never directly taken hits from one another.

  • Wizards are naturally more resilient than Muggles (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)

  • Tanks his own tower-sized explosion (Order of the Phoenix Wii game)

SCALING

Weaknesses

  • Physically an unimposing fighter; largely reliant on magical abilities in combat

  • Various spells have specific limitations or drawbacks depending on the skill of the caster, though Dumbledore’s inordinate capability makes this less of an issue

  1. Wow, this was really comprehensive. Good job. Between the speed feats you mentioned here and JK Rowling stating that summoning objects with Accio spell pulls things towards the magic user at "close to the speed of light", it seems like there is a pretty consistent presidence for sub-light/relativistic Harry Potter.
    RIP Edward Elric. 💀
Also, does this blog mean you'll be doing a battle featuring Dumbledore in the near future? Because if he's fighting Gandalf, that would suck considering both me and my friend CrowMVP/ThatCorvidOnTwitter are big supporters of Gandalf vs Raiden from Mortal Kombat.
