Character Analysis: Obito

Background

  • Full Name: Obito Uchiha

  • Age: 31 years

  • Height: 5’11” | 1.82 m

  • Weight: 155 lbs | 70.3 kg

  • AKA: Tobi, Madara Uchiha

  • Leader of the Akatsuki & Kirigakure

  • Trained by Minato & Madara

  • Is the coolest guy

Born in the Hidden Leaf Village, Konohagakure, Obito Uchiha dreamed of becoming Hokage from a young age. As a Genin (shinobi in training) he was trained by Minato Namikaze, the future Fourth Hokage, alongside his rival Kakashi and childhood crush Rin. Soon enough, however, despite being… well, literal children, the three were drafted into the Third Great Shinobi War and fought together as a unit under Minato’s leadership. Because child soldiers are all the rage these days. Tragedy would soon strike however, as it so often does in war, as Minato was separated from them and Rin was kidnapped. Obito and Kakashi pursued her, but although Obito’s Sharingan awakened for the first time in the ensuing battle, he ended up getting half of his body crushed in a cave-in. Though they had rescued Rin, Obito lay dying, and as a parting gift, granted Kakashi one of his eyes, in exchange for Kakashi’s word that he would keep Rin safe. Thus Obito perished, leaving Kakashi to carry on his ideals and dreams in his place.

…Or so they thought.

In truth, Obito survived. Miraculously, he was able to cling to life long enough for rescue to come in the form of his legendary ancestor, Madara Uchiha. By implanting Obito with White Zetsu, a being whose body contained cells from Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, Obito’s body was slowly restored to and beyond its former capabilities. All the while, Madara sought to influence Obito with his words and convince him of his own ideologies, as he was in search of a successor to carry on his will. You see, Madara believed that the world was fundamentally flawed, and that the shinobi system’s cycle of violence and hatred would never end unless they had a savior willing to push humanity to peace through force. To do this, he intended to implement a worldwide illusion called the Infinite Tsukuyomi, placing each individual into a dream world in which they would have everything they desire. Obito, however, cared nothing for Madara’s words at first, focusing only on recovering and reuniting with his friends. Eventually, upon learning that Rin’s life was in danger, he departed from Madara’s hideout to save her.

Unfortunately, however, he was too late. Upon reaching Rin’s location, he was greeted only with the sight of her impaled by Kakashi’s Raikiri, and surrounded by enemy shinobi. In his shock and rage, Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan activated for the first time, and soon enough, the ground became soaked with the blood of those who had taken the person he loved. It was then that Obito finally understood Madara’s ideals; understood that the world causes nothing but suffering. For true peace to exist, in which the innocent would never die meaningless deaths, a new world was necessary. Thus, Obito accepted his role as Madara’s successor, hid his face behind a mask, and set out on his quest to bring about the Infinite Tsukuyomi. To do so, he founded the Akatsuki, an organization of powerful missing-nin with a single goal: to capture each of the nine Tailed Beasts spread throughout the world, as their powers fused into one would be necessary to carry out the plan.

Several years after his initial “death”, Obito finally returned to Konoha, but was not there to reunite with those he had once considered comrades. Unleashing the strongest of the Tailed Beasts, the Nine-Tails, Obito carried out an attack on the Leaf, which would culminate in Minato being killed, and the Nine-Tails being sealed within Minato’s son, the infant Naruto Uzumaki. Though Obito himself was driven away during the attack, these events would eventually lead to the massacre of the Uchiha Clan, in turn causing Itachi Uchiha to join Obito’s cause, among the ranks of the Akatsuki.

Years passed, and over time, most of the Tailed Beasts were captured by the organization, with the exception of the two strongest, the Eight-Tails and the Nine-Tails, which continued to evade capture even after being pursued by various Akatsuki members. During this period, the Akatsuki were led by a man named Pain, while Obito worked from the shadows under the guise of Tobi, masquerading as an idiot while privately pulling Pain’s strings from behind the scenes. Eventually, however, as the Akatsuki’s most powerful members fell one by one, and Pain himself was ultimately defeated, Obito had to step out of the shadows and take control of the situation himself. Under the name Madara Uchiha, he declared war against the shinobi world and began his final campaign to take every Tailed Beast for himself.

In the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Obito took advantage of the forces provided to him by evil scalie Kabuto Yakushi, who had perfected a jutsu which would reanimate deceased shinobi from across history to fight for him. Alongside Kabuto and a resurrected Madara, Obito led the forces of the dead against the shinobi world, commanding the Tailed Beasts themselves in a battle against Naruto, who had begun to master the Nine-Tails’ power. It was then that Obito was finally unmasked, his treachery and fall from grace laid bare before his former friends. Fighting together with Madara, Obito fused each of the Tailed Beasts under his control into an incomplete Ten-Tails, and battled against the Allied Shinobi Forces, culminating in a final duel with Kakashi, which ended with Obito’s defeat.

It was then, however, that Obito betrayed even Madara, who intended to become the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. Escaping from Kakashi, he absorbed the Ten-Tails into himself, becoming its Jinchūriki instead, and gaining powers rivaling the legendary Sage of Six Paths. Even against the strongest opponents the shinobi world had to offer, Ten-Tails Obito proved overwhelming, only faltering at the very end, upon realizing that Naruto was just like him: a boy with a dream, who wanted to become Hokage. Despite it all, though Obito had become indoctrinated by Madara’s rhetoric, the kind child who had once looked to the future with optimism was still alive deep down. Unable to lie to himself anymore, Obito was defeated, both physically and ideologically.

Though Obito attempted to put an end to the war upon his defeat, he was quickly betrayed by Madara, who took the power of the Ten-Tails for himself. Madara was not so easily swayed as Obito, and so cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, trapping almost all of humanity within their own personal dream world. This, however, proved to be Madara’s undoing, as he himself did not understand the true purpose of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and ended up subsumed by the alien Kaguya, the progenitor of chakra. Within Kaguya’s dimensions, a final struggle ensued, in which Obito fought alongside not only Naruto and Sasuke, but his old friend Kakashi as well. Ultimately, even after all the atrocities he had committed, Obito chose to sacrifice his life to save his comrades, and ensure that Naruto would live on to defeat Kaguya and change the shinobi world for the better. Though it had brought him nothing but misery for so long, for the first time since he was a child, Obito finally believed that the world was worth fighting for.

Experience & Skill

Obito was trained to be a shinobi from early childhood, graduating from Konoha’s ninja academy when he was only 9 years old, and becoming a Chunin at age 11 thanks to his training under Minato. Though Obito was depicted as only average in his early childhood, he achieved these ranks notably earlier than the majority of shinobi. As a Chunin, Obito participated in the Third Great Shinobi War and gained a fair amount of experience in the field. Although he never became a Jonin before his “death”, he was capable of contending to an extent against Kakashi (a Jonin) as well as enemy Jonin on the battlefield.

Under the tutelage of Madara, Obito’s abilities vastly improved, to the point where he could not only slaughter an entire group of Mist shinobi singlehandedly, but also achieve feats that Minato believed could only be done by Madara himself. As just a teenager, Obito was capable of contending against Minato, who was a genius of superlative skill and strength even compared to most other Kage. Later on, Minato suggested to Naruto that having any hope of defeating Obito would require him to master the Nine-Tails’ power, and implied that Obito’s capabilities are greater than Pain’s. The latter is strongly supported by the fact that Pain is subservient to Obito. After Madara’s death, Obito also proved smart and manipulative enough to carry out the Eye of the Moon Plan in his stead, leading the Akatsuki in their mission of capturing the Tailed Beasts, and personally kicking off the Fourth Great Shinobi War.

He also helped Itachi slaughter the Uchiha Clan, murdering members of the Uchiha Police Force. His genjutsu is strong enough to take control of the Nine-Tailed Fox Kurama, despite the fact that it would require him to manipulate a gargantuan chakra network. Likewise, he was able to place the Fourth Mizukage Yagura under genjutsu, despite the fact that he is a Perfect Jinchūriki, and as such should normally be able to break free of such things. This feat in particular was impressive enough that it alone caused Kisame Hoshigaki to view Obito as his superior, referring to him as “Lord Mizukage”. He was also able to affect Kakashi (a Sharingan user) with genjutsu.

Even with extensive prep time, the Akatsuki member Konan was unable to defeat Obito, though in fairness she did maim him before losing. Alongside Deidara, he was also capable of defeating the Three-Tails, despite the Tailed Beasts’ impressive power. After acquiring a Rinnegan, he was able to control six Jinchūriki simultaneously, fight Kakashi, Guy, and KCM Naruto all at once, battle an entire army while controlling the Ten-Tails, and fight evenly with War Arc Kakashi, only losing because he wanted to. After becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, he was able to overwhelm Naruto and Sasuke, as well as the first three Edo Hokage. After having the Ten-Tails extracted, he was able to use Kamui to bridge Kaguya’s dimensions, which was established to be incredibly difficult.

Arsenal

Masks

While masquerading as Tobi and later as Madara, Obito hid his face with various masks, as was necessary to disguise his identity. During the Nine-Tails’ attack, he wore a mask with one eye hole and markings resembling those of the fox. As an adult prior to the Fourth Great Shinobi War, he wore an orange mask with a spiral pattern. This mask also has only one eye hole, and as such hides his second eye while he is wearing it. Finally, during the war, he wore a white mask with patterns resembling the Sharingan and Rinnegan, symbolizing the fact that he possessed both. This mask has three eye holes in the shape of the Sharingan’s tomoe, with the third being positioned in the center of his forehead, in the place where the Rinne-Sharingan opens. The white mask is durable enough to take a headbutt from KCM Naruto, though it was later cracked by Kakashi’s Raikiri and shattered by Naruto’s Rasengan.

Gunbai

A non-folding fan that Obito used during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, which originally belonged to Madara. It is a large, wide fan which is durable enough to take a hit from Naruto's Super Mini-Tailed Beast Ball without taking severe damage, can be attached to a long chain and kama sickle, and can be used both offensively and defensively against multiple opponents at once. It is also strong enough to cut through the roots of the God Tree. With the gunbai, Obito can use abilities such as the Uchiha Return and the Gunbai Fanned Wind jutsu.

Kusari

A chain Obito used during the attack on Konoha, which he uses in conjunction with his Kamui ability. Each end of the chain is attached to one of Obito’s wrists, forming a loop which trails behind him as he moves. By using Kamui to turn himself intangible, Obito can charge at an enemy and pass through them, causing them to become ensnared by the chain behind him. While the opponent is caught off guard and immobilized, Obito can then turn around and suck them into the Kamui dimension, ending the fight immediately provided they do not have a way to escape.

Kunai

One of the most basic weapons used by shinobi, kunai are short-ranged blades primarily used for stabbing, slicing, and parrying, and can be thrown to attack a target from a distance. Kunai can be imbued with chakra for greater durability and piercing power, and Obito can eject a large number of them from the Kamui dimension for surprise attacks.

Shuriken

Shuriken are the most basic and common weapons used by shinobi. Primarily throwing projectiles, shuriken are typically used to target more exposed parts of the body, such as the eyes, face, etc. They can also be used for dealing lethal blows at close range, typically by cutting open a target. A shinobi can also use their shuriken to distract an opponent or pin them down, and can infuse them with chakra for greater offensive power and control.

Fuma Shuriken: Shuriken variant which is larger than the basic shuriken, Fuma Shuriken are sharper and more lethal, and can be folded for easier storage. By spinning the blade in one hand, they can be used to slice and stab opponents. Obito can use these Shuriken in conjunction with Kamui for surprise attacks.

Explosive Tags

Explosive tags are sheets of paper inscribed with a special seal, and infused with chakra which will cause them to explode after a set amount of time. Many shinobi carry these tags around for common use, primarily placing them on weapons or surfaces in order to attack or lay traps for an opponent. Obito specifically has used explosive tags to supplement his Earth Style techniques, as well as in conjunction with Kamui.

Sharingan & Zetsu Stash

Over the years, Obito has amassed a massive collection of Sharingan eyes, which may have been part of his motive for instigating the Uchiha Clan Massacre. Though he does not carry them around with him, Kamui does allow him to teleport large distances, so in theory he should be able to travel to his stash and access these eyes whenever he chooses, so long as he can still use Kamui. He also has extra Zetsu body parts, which can be used to replace lost limbs, which is likely how he replaced his arm after his fights with Minato and Konan (he loses arms a lot).

Chakra

Overview

Chakra is life energy generated by a shinobi’s body, which is used to perform jutsu. It is composed of two parts: physical energy, and mental/spiritual energy. Combining the two creates chakra, and via hand seals, that chakra can be manipulated and released as a jutsu. These seals are typically performed two-handed by the user, but can notably also be performed with just one hand or using someone else’s. The chakra reserves of any individual varies, based on factors like lineage, body limitations, etc., but even those with large chakra reserves must know how to properly control them, otherwise they will not amount to much. Focus is an essential part of gathering chakra, and expending too much chakra can lead to death.

Chakra is transferred through the body via the “Keirakukei”, or the Chakra Network in the localization. This network is composed of points and pathways throughout the body that facilitate the flow of chakra to different parts. The pathways surround the organs, which produce chakra, so if one were to attack the Chakra Network, they would in turn damage the organs themselves. As noted previously, the Chakra Network’s pathways are interspersed with 361 nodes called “Tenketsu” (or Chakra Points), which are about as large as the tip of a needle. Though they are only visible to those with superhuman sensory abilities (even beyond what the Sharingan is capable of), if one possesses the senses and precision necessary to strike another’s Chakra Points accurately, they can stop or increase chakra flow.

Simple control over one’s chakra can grant the user several basic abilities. By gathering chakra at the bottom of the feet, shinobi can climb vertical surfaces without needing leverage, and can even stand upside down. This requires a small but precise amount of chakra, with the bottom of the foot being the most difficult place to gather chakra. This technique can also be used to walk on water, but this is done via continuously expelling chakra from the feet into the water, rather than gathering a set amount of chakra in the feet. By gathering chakra in their feet, shinobi are also capable of anchoring themselves to the ground and preventing themselves from being forcibly moved, as shown when Tsunade countered the Deva Path's gravity manipulation by sticking herself to the ground. The technique doesn’t just apply to surfaces, and can allow the user to catch and throw objects via chakra.

It has been demonstrated that it is possible to regulate one’s own body temperature via chakra control, even to the extent of countering ice that was spreading throughout the body. Strong enough chakra users can produce an aura that will induce intense fear to those who feel it. This can cause suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, or paralysis on the part of the victim, and potent enough chakra auras can even affect the user’s surroundings or nearby people. That said, strong enough characters like Orochimaru have demonstrated that it is possible to resist such an aura. Due to the fact that chakra is life energy, it also provides shinobi with some accelerated healing, though this is generally only extensive enough for injuries that the body would be able to heal from normally. Larger injuries such as lost limbs, eyes, etc. won’t come back.

The Uchiha had exceptional chakra and were extremely gifted in combat. Obito in particular is further enhanced by the cells of White Zetsu and Hashirama Senju, and as such has very large chakra reserves, allowing him to perform strenuous techniques with few drawbacks, and continue fighting longer than most shinobi.

Six Paths Chakra

Six Paths Chakra is a more powerful form of chakra, composed of the combined chakra from Indra and Asura Otsutsuki (in other words chakra from the Uchiha and Senju clans). The exact properties of this type of chakra are never fully elaborated upon, but it is significantly stronger than ordinary chakra. The combination of Senju and Uchiha chakra is notably necessary to awaken the Rinnegan, though Obito somehow never awakened his own Rinnegan despite having both types of chakra (there’s an explanation for why not, but it’s very hand-wavy). He learned a variety of Six Paths techniques upon becoming the Jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails.

Six Paths Senjutsu

Senjutsu refers to the ability to gather natural energy from one’s surroundings and use it to enhance one’s techniques. Six Paths senjutsu is a special variant acquired by Obito when he became the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki. Via Six Paths senjutsu, Obito’s physicality and abilities are greatly increased, to the point where only other senjutsu techniques and physical attacks were able to harm him, with ninjutsu and genjutsu becoming completely ineffective. It also greatly improves Obito’s ability to sense chakra and his surroundings, as Naruto (who also had Six Paths senjutsu), was able to sense Madara’s Limbo Shadows and fight them in hand-to-hand combat, despite the fact that they existed on another plane of existence. Six Paths senjutsu also greatly improves the user’s regeneration abilities.

Truth-Seeking Balls: Gudōdama (AKA Truth-Seeking Balls or Truthseeker Orbs) are weapons created via Six Paths senjutsu. They are orbs of chakra, composed of every elemental nature transformation, which can ignore durability and annihilate anything that they come into contact with, even preventing shinobi reanimated through Edo Tensei from regenerating, as they “nullify all jutsu”. It was later shown that the orbs’ destruction effect also extends to the soul itself, as Minato’s spirit was still missing its arms after the Reanimation Jutsu was released. The Third Hokage, Hiruzen, even compares their effects to that of Particle Style jutsu, which destroys matter at a molecular level (1, 2). In the case of Kaguya’s Expansive Truth-Seeking Ball (which is clarified in the databook to be functionally identical to normal Truth-Seeking Balls, merely bigger - 1, 2), these orbs are suggested to be capable of destroying and recreating space, providing them with an additional means of bypassing durability.

Combined with their superb agility, their various capabilities make them excellent tools, serving purposes both offensively and defensively. They were capable of easily dispelling Sasuke’s Amaterasu, which can burn through fireproof substances and was said to be as hot as the sun. They have a maximum range of about 70 meters, beyond which point Obito loses control over them, but within that radius he can control them telekinetically, attacking anything within his line of sight. He gained access to Truth-Seeking Balls after becoming the Jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails, and can use up to eight of them at a time.

Despite being called Truth-Seeking “Balls”, Obito is able to freely control their shape, manipulating them into a variety of other forms, primarily weaponry. Some examples include a bubble shield, giant arms, a staff, rods resembling the Rinnegan’s Black Receivers, and Obito’s Sword of Nunoboko. It is possible to resist the orb’s effects if one also has the power of the Six Paths, as Obito has survived touching them, as did Madara and Naruto. It is worth noting, though, that Obito can choose to allow them to harm him if he so desires, at one point using one to destroy half of his body.

It should also be noted that even after having the Ten-Tails ripped out of him, the residual changes to his physiology and abilities still allow him to create and manipulate Truth-Seeking Balls. This is because Tailed Beast abilities often remain with their Jinchuuriki even after they are extracted. For example, Gaara is still able to manipulate sand after losing Shukaku.

Ninjutsu

Refers to the manipulation of chakra in order to perform superhuman techniques. In order to be performed, ninjutsu requires the user to alter the shape and movement of their chakra in a specific manner, which is known as shape transformation. This can be improved even further by imbuing the techniques with one or more of the elements, which is known as nature transformation.

Katon (Fire Release)

Fire Style is the elemental style that Uchiha Clan members typically have an affinity for, Obito included. Fire Style techniques primarily involve gathering chakra and expelling it through the mouth as a wave of fire. These flames can take various forms and reach varying levels of power. Fire Style is strong against Wind Style but weak to Water Style.

Great Fireball Technique: The Great Fireball Technique is the staple of the Uchiha Clan, to the point where Uchiha are not considered full-fledged clan members until they have mastered it. The user gathers chakra in the mouth and then expels it as flame, which can be increased in power and size through gathering a greater amount of chakra. This technique can take the form of either a giant fireball, or a continuous stream of flames.

Blast Wave Wild Dance: A technique that combines the abilities of Fire Release with those of the Sharingan. Obito releases his flames in a stream which takes a spiraling form, trapping opponents in a vortex of fire.

Phoenix Sage Fire Technique: Spitting a volley of small fireballs into the air, Obito can direct the movement of each one with his chakra, making this attack difficult to avoid. By hiding shuriken within the flames, Obito can further increase the attack’s deadliness.

Uchiha Flame Formation: Technique which creates a large barrier of flames, burning whoever touches it. The barrier can burn with enough heat to wound Tailed Beasts. It requires only minimal chakra usage, so Obito can maintain it with little loss in stamina.

Fūton (Wind Release)

Wind Style is primarily used in two ways: large gusts of wind for blowing away targets, or inflicting piercing or slicing damage with wind. Wind Style is strong against Lightning Style but weak against Fire Style; when combined with a fire technique, it makes the fire stronger. Obito is established in the databooks to be capable of using Wind Style, primarily doing so via use of the gunbai.

Gunbai Fanned Wind: By waving the gunbai, Obito creates a huge wind gust, blowing back opponents with great force.

Uchiha Return: By blocking a jutsu with the gunbai, it is possible to nullify the attack, and then redirect it back at the target, producing a large blast. Madara does this against Naruto, reflecting his Rasengan, and Obito should reasonably be capable of doing the same.

Doton (Earth Release)

Earth Style ninjutsu focuses on manipulating the earth and terrain around the user for offensive and defensive purposes. Obito has demonstrated several Earth Style techniques while under the guise of Tobi.

Hiding Like A Mole Technique: By channeling chakra into the earth, the user turns it into fine sand, allowing them to create a space just large enough for the body to dig through it, similar to a mole (hence the name). While underground, the user can sense their own location and that which is happening on the surface via sensing magnetic forces, allowing them to plan their next move accordingly. This technique is typically used for subterfuge mid-combat, allowing the user to hide, set traps, or set up a sneak attack.

Whac-A-Mole Technique: By digging through the ground, Obito is able to pop up at multiple points across the battlefield, surprise-attacking targets in rapid succession and wacking them with a stick. Tobi is quite the jokester, after all.

Suiton (Water Release)

Water Style focuses on controlling the water in one’s surroundings or producing water, in order to attack and/or defend. It is strong against Fire Style but weak against Earth Style. Obito has never demonstrated any specific Water Style techniques in the series, but is established in the databooks to be capable of doing so. He can make you wet. Very exciting.

Raiton (Lightning Release)

Lightning Style focuses on the use of fast and powerful electric attacks for offensive purposes. It is strong against Earth Style but weak against Wind Style. Once again, though we know that Obito is capable of using Lightning Style techniques, he’s never actually demonstrated any specific ones.

Mokuton (Wood Release)

Wood Style is a kekkei genkai elemental jutsu which combines water and earth natures, allowing the user to control wood and create trees of various numbers, shapes and sizes, be it from their own body or the earth beneath their feet. These characteristics make it great for capturing foes or overwhelming them through sheer size and power, and it has the unique ability of suppressing and absorbing a target’s chakra should they be caught.

Wood Style was originally believed to be exclusive to Hashirama, but since Obito is enhanced with Hashirama’s cells, he can use it as well.

Wood Dragon Technique: Technique which creates a giant wooden dragon to attack. This dragon can bind targets or absorb chakra by biting them. It is strong enough to restrain the Nine-Tails, and could fight with Madara’s Susanoo when used by Hashirama.

Cutting Technique: A technique in which Obito forms large, jagged wooden spikes from his body, which can be used as short-ranged weapons or projectiles. Obito can also increase the branches’ size remotely, brutally skewering his enemies. He used this in his fight against the Mist shinobi after Rin’s death.

Great Spear Tree: By causing several thick roots to erupt from the ground, Obito can use this technique to crush his opponents into paste.

Underground Roots Technique: By manipulating the surrounding terrain, Obito can conjure several roots from underground, tangling around an area and crushing anyone caught by the roots.

Control over the God Tree: Obito as the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki possesses the ability to manipulate the God Tree, which is intimately connected to him to a similar extent as an extra limb, allowing him to move it around from a distance and grow it to great heights in mere moments. In doing so, the tree ensnares nearby shinobi with its roots and drains their chakra to the point where they die. He is also able to sprout flowers from the tree, which can each fire Tailed Beast Bombs. Ten-Tails Madara was able to absorb the tree for a boost in power, but it is unclear whether Obito could do the same.

Inton (Yin Release)

Yin Release is a type of jutsu separate from the elemental releases, which involves using spiritual energy to create new things from nothing. This is the style used to perform techniques such as genjutsu, or certain specific hiden abilities, such as the Nara clan’s shadow manipulation jutsu. Obito gained access to this style (alongside Yang Release) after acquiring Six Paths senjutsu.

Yōton (Yang Release)

Yang Release is another type of jutsu separate from the elemental releases, which involves using physical energy to control vitality, granting life to that which does not have it. Notably, the half of Kurama sealed within Naruto consisted of Yang chakra, and this style is used to perform some specific hiden abilities, such as the Akimichi clan’s size-shifting. Obito gained access to this style (alongside Yin Release) after acquiring Six Paths senjutsu.

Onmyōton (Yin–Yang Release)

Yin-Yang Release is the style created through combining Yin and Yang Release, using both the spiritual energy and physical energy that Obito gains via Six Paths senjutsu. Since these types of energy are the two components of chakra, this means that every other jutsu has some degree of connection to Yin-Yang Release. This is the style that the Sage of Six Paths used to create the Tailed Beasts, via his Creation of All Things jutsu, giving them form and then giving them life. It is also the style used by Naruto to heal Might Guy from the effects of the 8th Gate, restore Kakashi’s lost eye, and resuscitate Obito after the extraction of the Ten-Tails. Most notably for Obito in particular, it is the jutsu which is used for his Truth-Seeking Balls, and that which grants them the ability to not only nullify all ninjutsu, but also inflict damage that cannot be healed.

Miscellaneous Ninjutsu

Sensing Technique: As Obito is a sensor type shinobi, he is capable of more precisely sensing chakra than most shinobi, who can only sense chakra in large quantities. With this sensing technique, Obito was able to discern the fact that Sasuke was gathering chakra in his left eye to predict his attack, as well as detect the presence of others, even in different dimensions. Madara (to whom Obito should be comparable) was able to sense that Hashirama had been revived from miles away, fight with Sasuke and the Tailed Beasts while completely blind, and even sense the pattern of Sasuke’s Sharingan. Obito’s sensory abilities with Six Paths senjutsu should also be comparable to Naruto, who also had Six Paths Senjutsu, and was capable of sensing the presence of Madara’s Limbo Shadows despite them existing on another plane.

Chakra Absorption Technique: Ability which Obito can use to absorb the chakra of people he makes contact with. This can also be used to absorb ninjutsu attacks. Obito used this technique to absorb portions of the One-Tails and Eight-Tails from Madara. He could even absorb Kurama's poison-esque chakra without suffering any ill effects. Madara has also used it to absorb Sasuke’s Amaterasu, Onoki’s Particle Style, and Hashirama’s sage chakra.

Transformation Technique: A basic ninjutsu in which the user transforms into another person with a puff of smoke. It can also be used to transform into plants, animals and inanimate objects, though this is less common. This technique is most often used for infiltration and reconnaissance, but it can also be used in combat to fool one’s enemies.

Body Replacement Technique: A technique in which the user quickly replaces their body with something else in order to avoid an attack, such as a block of wood or another person. Since the attack will appear to strike the user before the technique ends, it commonly will leave their attacker confused for a moment, allowing the user to counterattack while their position is still unknown. Naruto has shown that it is also possible to use this technique on others to save them, though this is less common.

Clone Technique: Basic technique in which the user creates one or more clones to “fight” alongside them. These clones are not actually tangible and cannot physically interact with opponents, only serving to misdirect the user’s opponent.

Shadow Clone Technique: A more advanced clone technique developed by the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. As the name implies, it allows the user to make a perfect duplicate of themselves, which has actual mass, unlike the normal clone technique, meaning they can actually fight. When creating these clones, the user divides their chakra equally among them. Since this can lead to a rapid depletion in chakra reserves if too many are created (Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu), many shinobi are unable to use the more powerful variants of the technique, causing it to be labeled a kinjutsu (forbidden jutsu). Obito should (potentially) be able to create at least a small number of clones based on his high chakra reserves, though he likely cannot create hundreds like Naruto can. It should also be noted that while Shadow Clone Jutsu is a standard Jonin-level technique, Obito has never explicitly used it, so whether he could or would depends on how lenient you are.

Shadow Clones can be used in a variety of ways. They can act as a decoy, overwhelm an opponent through sheer numbers from multiple directions, help the user with their techniques, or simply buy them time. While Shadow Clones will usually disperse after being hit hard enough, Naruto’s clones were able to fight lengthy battles during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, and Madara somehow managed to make one that remained active through an autopsy and subsequent burial.

Clones can also disappear after completing their task, or if the jutsu is simply released by the user. Once this occurs, the memories and information acquired by the Shadow Clone will be transferred back to the user, along with the clone’s remaining chakra, making it an ideal tool for reconnaissance. In battle, this can be used to test out how an encounter with the opponent would go, and experiment with different tactics without endangering the user.

The technique can also allow the user to multiply weapons such as shuriken.

Summoning Technique: A space-time ninjutsu which allows the user to instantly teleport a person, animal, object, etc. to their location. This usually involves making a blood contract with an animal domain (such as frogs, snakes, dogs, etc.) and then exerting chakra to summon a creature from it. The size and power of the summon depends on the amount of chakra put into the summoning jutsu. Upon summoning the animal, assuming they are willing to work with the user, they can act as an assistant in combat, tracking, travel, or whatever else they can do that the user needs them for.

In Obito’s case, the Rinnegan bypasses the need for a blood contract, allowing him to summon not only the giant animals controlled by the Animal Path, but also the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path via… the Outer Path. Summoning the statue in this fashion, however, will cause it to latch on to the summoner and drain their life force, so Obito uses a normal blood sacrifice summoning ritual instead. He can also use a Summoning Technique to summon the Ten-Tails.

Temporary Paralysis Technique: A basic technique usable even by Genin, which physically restrains the target as though they are tied in invisible steel ropes, allowing the user to follow up with other attacks. The intensity varies greatly in accordance with the user’s level, suggesting that the degree of its effectiveness is strength-based.

Body Flicker Technique: Technique which allows shinobi to move short or long distances at speeds faster than the eye can track. The amount of chakra used varies depending on factors such as distance.

Counter Genjutsu: Jonin (and sometimes lower) level shinobi are capable of countering genjutsu, allowing them to, for instance, break out of a jutsu that puts people to sleep.

Genjutsu

Genjutsu are illusionary jutsu which cause the target to experience false sensations. Primarily, this is done via disrupting the target’s chakra flow to their brain, affecting all five of their senses to create fake sensations. In some cases, however, an existing chakra flow is established to be unnecessary. Kaguya was able to place people under genjutsu prior to the advent of chakra (though this has been subject to some retconning), and Shisui establishes in the novels that the Mangekyō Sharingan sidesteps the need for both eye contact and a chakra flow when casting genjutsu, injecting the user’s chakra into the target and manipulating them that way.

Some genjutsu are powerful enough that the target will continue to feel their effects even after they are dispelled. They can also be used to control the thoughts and actions of the target. Obito’s genjutsu in particular is consistently extremely powerful, allowing him to affect or control those who would normally be resistant to genjutsu (Kurama, Yagura, Kakashi).

Limited Tsukuyomi: (Note: This is from Road to Ninja, a movie. The movie was heavily supervised by Kishimoto and even had a manga tie-in, on top of not meaningfully contradicting the manga. As such, it falls within DB’s compositing rules). A prototype version of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, used by Obito as a test in preparation for the real one. By using the chakra from seven of the Tailed Beasts, Obito is able to create a “genjutsu world” within an orb. He can even send others into the fake world, and cause it to conform to their inner desires, like a watered-down version of the actual Infinite Tsukuyomi. In order to leave, they must destroy the crystal orb used to perform the jutsu.

Using the Limited Tsukuyomi requires setup. Obito had to observe Naruto beforehand, learning his inner desires and using that to form the genjutsu world. Beings in this world are seemingly physical, as the version of Sakura from the fake world was able to travel to the real world. Techniques meant to dispel genjutsu are not sufficient for canceling it. After the technique has been cast, Obito cannot directly alter the fake world, but can possess the fake individuals within it to battle the trapped targets.

Infinite Tsukuyomi: Though Obito never used the Infinite Tsukuyomi in the series, doing so was part of his plan, and he has the capability to do so via the God Tree, though due to Obito’s lack of a Rinne-Sharingan, this has a 15-minute casting time after the tree has been created.

When cast, the Infinite Tsukuyomi reflects light off of the Moon, placing everyone on the planet into a hypnotic dream state in which they have everything they desire. This renders those affected immobile, after which they will become ensnared and cocooned by the roots of the God Tree, a process which will eventually transform them into White Zetsu. In the series, the Infinite Tsukuyomi is shown to have no effect on those who possess the Rinnegan, or deceased shinobi who have been reanimated via Edo Tensei.

Taijutsu

Taijutsu refers to techniques based in hand-to-hand combat, without the use of weapons, ninjutsu, or genjutsu. It does not rely on chakra or hand seals to use, though chakra is used to increase the user’s physical power and speed. In addition to the fact that they are not lacking in power, taijutsu attacks can be performed much quicker than other jutsu, and will not wear down the user’s stamina as much as ninjutsu or genjutsu. Obito is skilled enough with taijutsu that he was able to match Kakashi during the War Arc, a prodigy genius who was trained from childhood and fought in multiple wars, with Obito only losing in the end because he allowed Kakashi to win.

Bukijutsu

Refers to the use of weaponry in shinobi combat. Obito has primarily demonstrated his skill in this field via his use of the Gunbai, but he has also implemented Shuriken and Explosive Tags in conjunction with his techniques, on top of developing a strategy against Minato centered around the use of his Kusari. As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, he notably uses the Sword of Nunoboku for combat, which also requires skill in Bukijutsu.

Fuinjutsu

Refers to the use of sealing techniques. Obito has the ability to use the Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal, as well as the Chibaku Tensei with the Rinnegan, which is categorized as a fuinjutsu. Most ninja are familiar with general sealing techniques to at least some extent. In some cases, these techniques are able to seal beings stronger than the user (for instance, in Boruto, Gaara was able to seal Urashiki for an extended period of time despite being weaker than him), but in many cases they can be broken out of by a sufficiently powerful opponent.

Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal: This jutsu is used by Rinnegan users such as Obito to seal the Ten-Tails in their body and turn them into its Jinchūriki. Outside of the necessary hand signs, its only requirement is that the Ten-Tails be awakened and near to the user.

Dojutsu

Dojutsu refers to techniques that involve the use of eyes which possess special abilities. They are typically classified as kekkei genkai, with Obito having access to a number of them.

Sharingan

The Sharingan is a dojutsu wielded by members of the Uchiha Clan, descendents of Indra Otsutsuki. When an Uchiha experiences extreme emotion, the brain releases a special kind of chakra that affects the optic nerve, awakening their Sharingan. Obito activated his own Sharingan for the first time when he saved Kakashi during the Third Great Shinobi War. It was originally believed that the Sharingan could only be awakened by negative emotions, but it is later shown that any intense emotion can suffice, as shown by Obito himself, as well as Sasuke’s daughter Sarada. Obito’s Sharingan eyes provide him with a variety of abilities that can all be classified under two categories, insight and hypnotism.

In terms of insight, the Sharingan grants the user heightened perception, allowing them to see things invisible or unperceivable to the naked eye. This includes things like reading lip movements or perceiving things on a cellular level. It also greatly enhances the user’s accuracy and precision. By reading muscle movements, they can predict an opponent’s ensuing actions in advance and react accordingly. It even lets the user perceive chakra, allowing the user to perceive it as color and track its flow through the body. The term “Sharingan” literally means “Copy Wheel Eye”, and as such can allow the user to see the reality behind any jutsu, as well as duplicate the techniques of an opponent after seeing them only once. Even at a base level, the Sharingan can evolve, gaining up to three tomoe, each of which increases the user’s perception even further. Naturally, Obito has all three of them.

It should be noted, however, that there are limitations to the Sharingan. The user must be physically capable of a technique in order to copy it, and as such cannot copy abilities like kekkei genkai, which require a specific genealogy in order to use. Additionally, they obviously cannot copy that which they cannot see. Their ability to read movements may be impressive, but it can still be worn down along with the user’s stamina, and cannot compensate if the user is still too slow to react to their opponent's attack.

In terms of hypnotism:

Genjutsu: Sharingan: The Sharingan’s genjutsu is an illusionary technique that is activated through eye contact with the target. This can cause a variety of effects, such as paralysis, knocking someone unconscious, or forcing them to give up information. It can show a target the user’s memories or erase the target’s own memories outright, remove genjutsu placed on others and control a person’s actions. It can also be used to read minds and memories (Shippuden episode 484).

Genjutsu / Mind Resistance: The Sharingan as well as its evolutions are able to repel genjutsu (1, 2). Strong enough Sharingan users are similarly immune to fear-inducing auras, even from the likes of Kurama, whose aura is pure hatred. The base Sharingan, when used by Sasuke, was able to overcome Orochimaru’s mental universe, which normally destroys the minds of people within it. Sasuke was likewise able to resist a weakened Itachi’s Tsukuyomi with just the base Sharingan. A Mangekyō user like Obito should have even greater resistance. Additionally, though it is unclear if he did this with the Sharingan specifically, Obito was also able to resist the mental control of Black Zetsu temporarily, as well as quickly repel Ino’s attempt to control his mind, despite being caught off-guard by it.

Izanagi: One of the Uchiha Clan’s infamous kinjutsu. With Izanagi, the user can bridge the gap between reality and illusion, overwriting any moment in time with a new reality where what did occur never occurred, even injury or death. In short, it allows the user to rewrite an occurrence as nothing more than an illusion. This can be used continuously over a certain time-frame in order to rewrite all events that occur throughout (the duration of which is variable, in Danzo’s case, one minute per eye; in Obito’s case, five minutes per eye), or instantaneously to rewrite one specific occurrence. Though Izanagi can negate all damage that takes place while it is active, both Danzo and Obito notably did not heal any of the damage incurred before the jutsu was activated, potentially suggesting that they cannot do so. In the anime, however, it is shown to not only be possible to restore damage from before activation, but also to use Izanagi on others, restoring a large group of deceased individuals with a single use of the ability.

It was used by the Sage of Six Paths to control creation, by using Yin and Yang Release to create the “shape” of an illusion and then give it life. Because of this, most Uchiha were not able to control it, as they only had access to half of the Sage’s chakra. However, those such as Obito, who possess both thanks to Hashirama Cells, are able to cast more powerful illusions that maintain their effects over a longer period of time.

Due to how powerful Izanagi is, once it has expired, the user loses their eyesight in the eye they cast it with, preventing them from ever using their Sharingan again. This can only be circumvented via implanting a new eye, or via awakening the Rinnegan as Madara did.

Transcription Seal: Izanagi: By sealing the jutsu in the user’s Sharingan, the user can set parameters so that Izanagi will only activate after certain conditions are met. Madara was able to set his right eye to activate Izanagi in the event of his death, allowing him to return to life without anyone being any the wiser. As is the case with the standard Izanagi, it does still blind the eye that uses it.

Izanami: The other legendary kinjutsu of the Uchiha and counterpart to Izanagi, which was developed to punish those who abused the use of Izanagi. When Izanami is used, the target becomes trapped in an illusory loop so that the same things seem to happen to them repeatedly without stopping. To activate the technique, the user must perform an action and then repeat it again later, connecting those two moments in a time loop in which everything that happens between them connects as well. This creates an infinite loop in which the target's mind is trapped, potentially forever.

That said, Izanami was developed to save those who had grown arrogant in the power of Izanagi, so it is naturally possible to break out of the loop. When the target accepts the fact that they cannot run away from what has happened and instead chooses to face their destiny, Izanami will deactivate. Like Izanagi, the use of Izanami takes away the light of one’s Sharingan, blinding them in that eye and preventing them from using it ever again. It should be noted that Obito hasn't used Izanami, though given its prominence in the Uchiha Clan's history, coupled with his knowledge of Izanagi, its counterpart, he should very likely at least be aware of it.

Mangekyō Sharingan

The Mangekyō Sharingan is the next evolution of the Sharingan, awakened through the trauma of witnessing the death of someone very important to the user, such as a friend or sibling. Or at least that used to be the requirement, now it can just be any old emotion, thanks Boruto. In the past, it was common for Uchiha to kill their best friends in order to awaken it. Obito unlocked his Mangekyō after witnessing Rin’s death. The Mangekyō’s abilities are much greater than that of the standard Sharingan, and additionally provide the user with two abilities unique to them, one for each eye. In most cases, if an Uchiha overuses their Mangekyō, they will eventually go blind, but Obito has never needed to worry about this due to the fact that he is enhanced by Hashirama’s Cells.

Short-Ranged Kamui: Obito’s unique Mangekyō ability, Kamui, allows him to transfer himself and objects to and from a pocket dimension via a wormhole created by his eye. Two primary versions of Kamui exist, but since Kakashi has Obito’s second eye for most of the series, Obito typically only has access to one of them: the short-ranged variant granted by his right eye. With it, he can transfer his body to the Kamui dimension, appearing to onlookers as though he is phasing through attacks. This is achieved through an effect in which, when parts of his body come into contact with attacks, people, or objects, those specific overlapping portions are automatically transferred into the Kamui dimension, while the rest of his body (the parts that are not overlapping) remains present in the real world. This does not require conscious thought to activate, as shown when it saved Obito from Itachi’s Amaterasu. This ability gives off the illusion that Obito is intangible and impossible to touch, a misconception which he has taken extensive advantage of in order to misdirect opponents.

The ability also has various other applications. It allows Obito to teleport via entering the dimension and exiting elsewhere, transport others into the dimension and leave them there (or fight them within), and pull weapons out of the dimension in order to attack. He can apply the “intangibility” effect to objects that he touches as well. He can “phase” through the ground to set up for a surprise attack.

In terms of drawbacks, there are several. When used consecutively, Kamui has a time limit of five minutes, and while it’s active, Obito cannot touch or physically attack other people, though it doesn’t preclude him from using his other abilities. If a person, weapon, or attack enters his dimension relative to where he is in the real world, they can strike his body parts within the dimension, bypassing the ability. When transferring his own body into the dimension rather than someone else, it takes longer. In order to do so, he must also deactivate the intangibility.

Upon becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Obito notably loses the ability to turn his body intangible. While it is not explicitly confirmed, it is very likely that this is due to the fact that he is immune to ninjutsu, which would logically prevent Kamui’s effects from altering his body. This does not mean Kamui is totally useless, however, as Madara demonstrated that it is still possible for a Ten-Tails Jinchūriki to use Short-Ranged Kamui to travel to and from the Kamui dimension.

After having the Ten-Tails extracted from him, despite retaining some of the Ten-Tails’ powers and increased strength to some extent, Obito regained the ability to pass through things with Kamui.

Dual Mangekyō Sharingan

After having his Rinnegan taken back by Madara, Obito was re-implanted with the original eye that he had given to Kakashi, after which he became capable of using techniques with both eyes, something he retained up until his death. It should be noted that the second Mangekyō Sharingan is mutually exclusive with the Rinnegan (he can only have up to two eyes at once, after all), so keep in mind that abilities granted by this eye cannot be used in conjunction with Rinnegan abilities and vice-versa.

Long-Ranged Kamui: Primarily demonstrated by Kakashi, this version of Kamui allows the user to manifest a small spatial vortex at the focal point of their vision, warping space and transporting anything within the vortex to the Kamui dimension. This can allow the user to send away projectiles, or warp away body parts from a target, bypassing their durability.

Kamui-Imbued Techniques: With both eyes, Kakashi was able to imbue his attacks with the properties of Kamui, primarily his Raikiri, causing that which was struck by the attack to be warped to the Kamui dimension. While Obito cannot use Raikiri specifically, it’s possible that he could replicate a similar effect with his own attacks.

Susanoo: This is entirely hypothetical and thus should be taken with a grain of salt. However, those who have unlocked the unique abilities of both of their Mangekyō eyes are capable of manifesting their chakra as a giant, humanoid avatar known as the Susanoo. Obito had both of his eyes back when he died, and when he gave them to Kakashi afterward, Kakashi was able to use them to manifest a Perfect Susanoo

Yasaka Magatama: Jutsu used by the Susanoo in which it forms spinning, shuriken-esque blades to throw at its opponent. These blades can be connected by a thread or thrown individually.

Kamui Shuriken: When Kakashi used both of Obito’s eyes, his Susanoo was able to create several large shuriken imbued with the properties of Kamui. Upon contact with a target, these shuriken simultaneously inflict cutting damage, and warp the affected area to the Kamui dimension.

Rinnegan

The Rinnegan is considered to be the greatest of the three great dojutsu of the shinobi world, above the Sharingan and Byakugan. It can be awakened by an individual who possesses both the chakra of the Senju and Uchiha clans - or more specifically the chakra of Indra and Asura Otsutsuki. Obito possesses a single Rinnegan that originally belonged to Madara, who obtained it when he implanted Hashirama’s cells into his body.

The Rinnegan improves the user’s mental resistances to the point of being unaffected by the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and has shown to allow the user to perceive events occurring in stopped time.

It is important to note that while Obito has not demonstrated all of the Rinnegan’s abilities himself, he should be capable of all of them, and simply chooses not to for context-specific reasons that are established by the narrative (his opponents know how to counter them, he needs to focus his chakra on other things, etc.).

Black Receiver: Black Receivers are long, durable black rods that can be formed from a Rinnegan user’s body, most commonly from the hands as a stabbing weapon, projectile or staff. They can also produce chains to bind a target. If the target is able to successfully impale the target with one, they can transmit their chakra through the receiver, disrupting the victim’s chakra flow and inhibiting their movements, with multiple receivers being able to immobilize a person entirely. However, this can be overcome by ripping the rod out, or if the victim’s chakra is strong enough to resist the number of rods they've been stabbed with. The receivers are strong enough to block Sasuke’s Amaterasu, but they are not so durable that they cannot be broken.

Genjutsu Blocks: The Rinnegan can be used to install numerous mental blocks and genjutsu traps into the user’s head, providing them protection against mind reading and other mental invasions.

Note: The Rinnegan typically grants the user unique abilities, such as Sasuke's Amenotejikara or Madara’s Limbo. Technically speaking, Obito possesses Madara’s Rinnegan, but has never demonstrated the ability to use Limbo. It is highly likely that unique abilities can only be utilized by the person who possessed the Rinnegan when it was first awakened. Alternatively, it is possible that Obito possesses his own unique Rinnegan ability and simply never used it, similar to how Sasuke has his own unique Mangekyō ability (Kagutsuchi) despite possessing Itachi’s eyes. In any case, the fact that we don’t know means that it is irrelevant to Obito’s capabilities.

Deva Path

Allows the user to control gravity, more specifically attractive and repulsive forces. This allows them to repel ninjutsu, taijutsu, and bukijutsu attacks. It cannot, however, be used repeatedly in quick succession; there's a recharge time of about 5 seconds in between uses before the ability can be used again. The more power is used for an attack, the longer these intervals will be. This path can also be used for levitation.

Bansho Ten’in (Universal Pull): By manipulating attractive forces, the user can pull a target towards themself. This can be used to target a single person or multiple at once. It is typically combined with a close quarters attack, such as piercing attacks or the Preta Path, to strike blows against a target that they could otherwise defend from or dodge. The ability only has a range of about ten meters, requiring the user to be at relatively close range to make use of it.

Shinra Tensei (Almighty Push): The user creates a repulsion field around themself, forcefully pushing away anything and everything around them. Pain’s Deva Path used this technique to blast away attacks, and destroy most of the village. He was also able to blast back several boss frogs, damaging the area further and breaking Gamabunta's bones.

Chibaku Tensei (Planetary Devastation): The user launches a black orb into the sky, which then serves as a gravity core, ripping out the land beneath it, which then congeals around the core, creating a giant sphere of earth in the sky. This is typically used for capturing and restraining foes, as it is officially classified as a fuinjutsu. Nagato used it in an attempt to contain Six-Tailed Naruto, Naruto and Sasuke used it to seal Kaguya, and Sasuke later used it to restrain all nine of the Tailed Beasts. It is also the technique that the Sage of Six Paths and his brother used to create the moon. This is not to say that it cannot be used to attack however, as Madara has used it to create numerous meteors in the sky to crash down on his enemies. It is possible to prevent Chibaku Tensei from activating by destroying the gravity core, and when doing so, an opponent does not need to aim, due to its gravitational pull.

Human Path

Lets the user read a victim’s mind, rendering them immobile as they place their hand on the target’s head. It can also pull the target’s soul from their body through either their head or their chest, killing them once it is extracted. Notably, Naruto was able to resist the soul removal effects of the Human Path by pulling his soul back into his body, but in other cases the victim’s soul is removed instantly without any opportunity to resist, as shown with Shizune. This suggests that Naruto’s resistance was an ability of his, rather than a weakness of the path. The stolen souls can also be stored in the King of Hell.

Preta Path

Allows the user to absorb chakra from a target. It can be used to absorb ninjutsu attacks like the Rasenshuriken, or suck out energy directly from a person. It can even absorb chakra from foes more powerful than the user, as evidenced by Pain’s Preta Path absorbing chakra from Sage Mode Naruto. In the databook, the ability is described as absorbing energy as though it is sending it into “a bottomless swamp”, supporting the idea that there is no explicit cap to the amount of energy that can be absorbed, but also that the path’s user cannot draw on the energy after absorbing it. The Preta Path is also able to absorb Senjutsu chakra, but if the user cannot properly control the natural energy, absorbing too much can cause them to turn into a frog, and eventually to stone.

Blocking Technique Absorption Seal: The Preta Path user creates a sphere around themself, which automatically absorbs any chakra that comes into contact with it, regardless of shape or size. Pain used it to absorb Sage Mode Jiraiya’s Big Ball Rasengan.

Naraka Path

Used for interrogation. After restraining a target, the user summons the King of Hell and asks their victim(s) a question. When an answer is given, the King of Hell pulls out their tongues and begins to absorb their life force (in the databook the “tongues” are described as the victim’s soul, but they are visibly different from other depictions of the soul in the series, and it is unclear exactly how it works). If the victim tells the truth, they will be spared and simply left exhausted. If they lie, the King of Hell will rip out their tongue/soul and the target will die. They will likewise die if they refuse to answer.

As stated, the Naraka Path’s use does require that the target be captured first. Konohamaru was able to escape Pain’s Naraka Path with Shadow Clones, and reasonably speaking, characters who are stronger than the user, can teleport, or have other options for escaping the user’s grasp could render it ineffective.

Asura Path

Allows the user to enhance their body with weapons and mechanical limbs. This includes (but is not necessarily limited to): missiles in the arm, a laser cannon in the head, growing in size, gaining three heads, six arms and a large saw blade tail, an extendable arm with coils that can ensnare opponents, and a cannon in the arm.

Asura Attack: User fires a massive blast of chakra energy from a part of their body, such as the head or arm. This attack can destroy buildings.

Flaming Arrow Warhead: Fires the missiles loaded in the arm. Removing the arm further allows more missiles to be loaded and fired. Each missile has homing capabilities, and is launched in different directions with enough power to level buildings.

Flaming Arrow of Amazing Ability: User builds up chakra in the hand and then launches a rocket-powered fist to strike a target with enough force to destroy stone. Via a magnet, the user can call the fist back to their arm once the attack is completed.

Animal Path

Allows the user to summon giant animals to assist in combat. These animals are helpful for overwhelming opponents via size, numbers and destructive power. They are strong enough to wreak havoc on buildings during Pain’s assault on Konoha, and can be used to transport the user.

Giant Centipede: Attacks by using its body as a battering ram, strong enough to destroy buildings.

Giant Multi-Headed Dog: Can grow more heads every time it is hit, and split into more individual versions of itself. It also has wings for flight, and can regenerate limbs that have been cut off, such as a foot. Via its ability to split apart and regen, it was able to withstand a hit from KCM Naruto’s Rasenshuriken.

Giant Rhino: Attacks via charging forwards and destroying everything in its path, capable of destroying buildings.

Giant Crustacean: Can perform water release techniques, namely the Wild Bubble Wave jutsu, in which it fires a stream of water bubbles which reduce friction in the area, limiting an opponent’s movements.

Giant Snake-Tailed Chameleon: Can blend in with its surroundings, hide its user in its mouth, crawl on walls, and attack with its tail and tongue.

Giant Drill-Beaked Bird: Can fly at high speeds and attack with powerful dives, as well as its beak. In the anime, it can perform a jutsu in which it lays eggs that will explode like bombs. It is also capable of producing dust clouds with lightning by flying low to the ground.

Giant Ox: Has a powerful charge attack due to its great size and strength.

Giant Panda: Can harden its body like stone, allowing it to act as a shield.

Outer Path

Grants the user control over life and death.

Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique (Rinne Rebirth): Allows the user to revive the dead at the cost of their own life, though it is implied that the user’s survival is dependent on their chakra levels. Upon its use, the technique releases deceased souls from the King of Hell back to their own bodies. This also works on those whom the user did not kill personally, since Obito used it to revive Madara.

The Outer Path also allows the user to transmit their chakra into the black receivers and control bodies implanted with the rods from a distance (this is most effective when used on corpses, as living people can resist them, as Naruto did), and use abilities related to the Gedou Mazou (Demonic Statue of the Outer Path).

Summoning: Demonic Statue of the Outer Path: Used as part of the Outer Path’s abilities; the user summons and controls the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Rather than requiring a blood offering as other summons do, the statue instead drains the user's life force. So while this technique is available to Obito, he does not typically use it, preferring a more standard summoning technique.

This statue is the shell of the Ten-Tails after it had its chakra removed and split into the Tailed Beasts. When Madara awakened his Rinnegan, he gained the ability to summon the statue from where it had been sealed, and Obito is capable of doing so as well. The statue has an incredibly powerful life force, which can be used to sustain a person's lifespan well beyond what is natural (though should they ever move from the statue, they would immediately die) and wields incredible physical strength thanks to its immense size. It can shoot dragons that absorb the souls of anyone they touch and kill them, as well as create giant shockwaves, strong enough to blow back users of the Multi-Size technique, namely Choza and Choji Akimichi. Rinnegan users are also able to manifest massive chains from the statue.

Demonic Statue Chains: Obito possesses the ability to manifest chains made of chakra, from himself as well as the statue, capable of binding that which they ensnare. These function similarly to a sealing technique, and Obito can adjust their size to capture and suppress the power of various targets, even those as large as the Tailed Beasts. Though these chains are not indestructible, the user is capable of repairing them easily should they be broken.

By absorbing all of the Nine Tailed Beasts’ chakra, whether it be the full thing or just a sliver of their chakra, the Demonic Statue will then transform back into its original form of the Ten-Tails.

Miscellaneous

Hashirama Cells

These are cells from the body of Hashirama Senju, which were implanted into Obito’s body by Madara. These cells are a major MacGuffin in Naruto, and are used to enhance a number of characters due to the fact that Hashirama possessed remarkable chakra, regenerative abilities, and the capability to use Wood Style ninjutsu, an ability exclusive to him and those implanted with his cells. Hashirama cells also grant the user regeneration, as well as increased physicality, chakra, and stamina. Obito technically was not implanted with these cells directly, but rather had his body merged with White Zetsu, a being who already possessed Hashirama Cells. Even still, he gained all of the cells’ benefits, along with a reduction in the side effects of Mangekyō usage, allowing him to spam Kamui to his heart’s content without the risk of going blind.

Something additional worth noting is that Hashirama Cells can transmute a person whom they are implanted into, turning them into a tree if they cannot handle the cells. Obito has never suffered any such ill effects, resisting the transmutation even when near death, low on chakra, or both.

Regeneration: Like anyone enhanced by Hashirama Cells, Obito possesses a strong healing factor. The White Zetsu that merged with Obito completely regenerated the left side of his body which had previously been crushed, and helped him survive a Raikiri blowing a hole through his chest. This regeneration is further enhanced by Six Paths senjutsu, allowing him to survive after atomizing half of his body with his own Truth-Seeking Orb. Likewise, Ten-Tails Madara survived getting a chunk of his body blasted off and burned by Night Guy, as well as being cut in half, only to continue fighting without exhibiting any issues. He was able to regrow a new lower half soon after (though this was after absorbing the God Tree, which Obito never did). Madara recovered from Night Guy within a matter of seconds, demonstrating the speed of the regeneration.

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki State

Ten-Tails

The Ten-Tails is the combined form of Kaguya Otsutsuki and the God Tree, and as such is believed to be the progenitor of all chakra. A thousand years ago, it went on a rampage, doing battle with Kaguya’s sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, in order to retake the chakra they stole from her. Eventually, it was defeated, and Hagoromo sealed it within his body, becoming its first Jinchūriki, which would lead to him one day becoming known as the Sage of Six Paths. Later, however, he split the beast into nine fragments of itself, the Tailed Beasts, in order to ensure that it wouldn’t cause any more harm. He sent the beasts out into the world, and all that remained of the Ten-Tails was its husk, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, which was sealed within the Moon

From Madara, Obito learned that the Ten-Tails could be revived, should all the Tailed Beasts be captured and absorbed into the Demonic Statue. It was for this purpose that he founded the Akatsuki and sought to capture the Jinchūriki of the present day, putting their Tailed Beasts to use for the Eye of the Moon Plan. After this was accomplished, Obito had the ability to summon the Ten-Tails, and can then use the Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal to seal it within himself, thus entering his Jinchūriki form. After it is summoned, however, the Ten-Tails will only remain under control temporarily, and will eventually go on a rampage once again. As such, sealing it is necessary for keeping it in check. After sealing the beast within himself, though Obito greatly struggled to control it for a time, he was eventually able to mentally overcome the strain of doing so, and gain control over its immense power.

In addition to Six Paths senjutsu and Truth-Seeking Balls, the Ten-Tails has several other powers of its own.

Bijūdama (Tailed Beast Bomb): The trademark attack of the Tailed Beasts; the Ten-Tails condenses chakra into its mouth and then fires it with immense destructive force. These projectiles can reach across hundreds of miles and produce explosions large enough to eclipse continents. Despite typically taking the form of a ball, the Ten-Tails has also shown to be capable of firing it in the form of a beam, powerful enough to completely destroy the Tailed Beast Bombs fired by the Eight-Tails and Nine-Tails. It has also launched attacks that have destroyed mountains and left massive destruction in their wake.

Ten-Tails Fission: The Ten-Tails can break off parts of its body, which take the form of humanoid figures, producing a small army to overwhelm foes via sheer numbers. The sizes of these creatures can vary, but for the most part they tend to be about as large as a human. Many, however, can reach heights comparable to those of Team 7’s summons.

Tenpenchii (Cataclysm): Literally translating to “Natural Disaster Befalling Heaven and Earth”, an unsuppressed Ten-Tails is capable of disrupting the natural energy surrounding it and creating a massive, continent-spanning natural disaster. This includes simultaneous storms, lightning, earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods.

It is also worth noting that the Ten-Tails is created through the combined chakra of all the Tailed Beasts individually, and as such should logically be able to use all of their unique abilities. With only a much smaller portion of each beast’s chakra, which was stated to make him “in a manner of speaking, the Jinchūriki for the Ten-Tails”, Naruto was able to use all of their unique kekkei genkai abilities (1, 2, 3). Though the Sage of Six Paths gave each Tailed Beast new individuality via the Creation of All Things jutsu, there is no reason why any new abilities that could have come from this should have been lost when the Tailed Beasts were re-fused into the Ten-Tails. Moreover, the Truth-Seeking Balls are stated to incorporate every nature transformation, and Ten-Tails Madara was able to use Storm Release, a kekkei genkai that he does not have access to normally. Both of which strongly support the notion that the Ten-Tails and its Jinchūriki should be capable of using the abilities, nature styles, and kekkei genkai from the individual Tailed Beasts composing it.

As an aside, Obito’s version of the Ten-Tails is an incomplete version, which only possesses trace amounts of chakra from Gyūki and Kurama. As such, it is less likely that Ten-Tails Obito can use abilities from those two, since the quantity of chakra from each was very low.

Shukaku: The One-Tails, Shukaku is an enormous tanuki which possesses extensive control over sand. This includes telekinetic manipulation of sand, and the use of Jiton (Magnet Release) kekkei genkai to control iron sand, as well as powerful sealing techniques. Scaling to Gaara, who got his abilities from Shukaku, it should also be able to force sand into a person’s blood stream and control them from within.

Matatabi: The Two-Tails, Matatabi is a feline which possesses fire release techniques strong enough to create blue flames.

Isobu: The Three-Tails, Isobu is a large turtle with a crab-like shell, capable of using powerful water release techniques. It has been shown to be capable of creating coral, generating tidal waves, and producing a hallucinogenic mist to exploit the insecurities of its victims (Shippuden episode 100). It has also shown itself to be capable of producing thousands of smaller clones within itself (Shippuden episode 107), and even using space-time ninjutsu, hiding itself in a separate dimension should the situation call for it (Shippuden episode 108).

Son Gokū (Not that one): The Four-Tails, Son Gokū is a massive monkey with the build of a gorilla, capable of producing extremely powerful fire and earth style techniques, as well as combining them via its Yōton (Lava Release) kekkei genkai. In doing so, it can imbue its attacks with lava and make them incredibly hot, melting through most enemies. It can also cloak its Jinchūriki in a lava chakra mode, and even launch molten rock from the ground as though erupting a volcano.

Kokuō: The Five-Tails, Kokuō is a giant… uh, horse? Something like that. It possesses the ability to combine fire and water release via its Futton (Boil Release) kekkei genkai. Though Kokuō’s use of this ability has never been fully explored, other users of boil release such as Mei are capable of using it to produce corrosive vapor, controlling its pH and allowing it to dissolve weak enough substances after only being exposed briefly. When used by Naruto, Kokuō’s own boil release was capable of producing steam from the body, melting surrounding ice and greatly increasing Naruto’s physical abilities. According to the databook, this physical boost allowed Naruto to strike with physical attacks comparable to the strength provided by the Eight Gates (Naruto Region Combo).

Saiken: The Six-Tails, Saiken is a giant slug who specializes in water release. It can emit corrosive substances in the form of a liquid or a gas, expel a sticky adhesive for trapping targets, and produce soap bubbles that can transport the user, explode upon contact, or produce a variety of miscellaneous effects (smoke, acid, blinding powder, etc.).

Chōmei: The Seven-Tails, Chōmei is a giant rhinoceros beetle which primarily utilizes insect-based attacks, such as biting enemies, ramming them with its horn, or trapping them in a cocoon which can slow down chakra absorption techniques (Shippuden episode 412). It can also fly, and emit a powder from its wings to blind opponents.

Jinchūriki Form

After sealing the Ten-Tails within himself, Obito becomes its Jinchūriki and gains an immense power boost, placing him on a level rivaling the Sage of Six Paths (albeit weaker). With it, he gains Six Paths chakra and the ability to use Six Paths senjutsu, increasing the extent of his sensory abilities and regeneration. It also grants him Truth-Seeking Balls. (Refer to all mentioned sections for details on their abilities)

As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Obito is notably able to touch Truth-Seeking Balls without suffering ill effects if he doesn’t want to. This suggests resistances to each of its individual abilities, which are outlined in the Balls’ section above. Jinchūriki in general are capable of repelling genjutsu via their rapport with their Tailed Beast. Ten-Tails Obito was also capable of withstanding the sun-level heat from Sasuke’s Amaterasu, and breaking out of Hashirama’s Gate of the Great God, which is a sealing jutsu.

Though the form is powerful, it is not without drawbacks. As noted under the Ten-Tails’ section, its power is difficult to control at first, though through his sheer will, Obito was able to withstand its power tearing his consciousness apart, eventually overpowering it and gaining control of it. That said, should it be extracted from Obito, he will be killed, as is the case with any other Jinchūriki and their Tailed Beast. He only survived it in the series due to being resuscitated by Naruto’s Six Paths healing ability.

Sword of Nunoboko: Created via Truth-Seeking Orbs, this blade is Ten-Tails Obito’s primary close-ranged weapon. It is said to have been used by Hagoromo to create the world (not literally). The strength of the sword is established to be reliant on Obito’s willpower and resolve. Striking with the sword can create a massive eruption of energy, and with it, Obito can fire energy slashes.

Scaling

With both the Sharingan and Rinnegan, Obito in the War Arc was shown to be comparable to characters such as KCM2 Naruto and Edo Madara. This places him in a tier well beyond Kage level, allowing him to scale to the majority of the feats in the series, though he still falls short compared to characters like Hashirama, Madara’s Perfect Susanoo, Kurama, the Ten-Tails, and of course Six Paths level characters.

Feats that Obito scales to in base (as of the War Arc):

As the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Obito was stronger than Hashirama and the Ten-Tails, and was stated to have power rivaling the Sage of Six Paths. Though he is still weaker than him to an extent, since One-Eyed Ten-Tails Madara (who was stronger than Jūbito) was mentioned to be only “getting close” to the Sage’s power. Regardless, he should still be in the same general ballpark of Hagoromo’s feats, as well as the feats of those comparable to him (and obviously those weaker). This would also include Toneri and relevant feats from The Last, since Toneri’s powers were indicated to be equivalent to Hamura’s, who is comparable to Hagoromo. Obito was also able to react to attacks from Kaguya, and as such should still likely scale to speed feats up to that point.

Feats that Obito scales to as the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki:

Weaknesses

  • Chakra reserves are still limited despite being large, though he can compensate for this via senjutsu and tapping into the Ten-Tails’ reserves, which are “almost infinite

  • Some of his more noteworthy abilities, such as Kamui and Izanagi, can only be used for a limited amount of time

  • Some techniques have the potential to blind his eyes, which could greatly reduce his capabilities if he is unable to replace them

  • Kamui has some drawbacks that can be exploited, such as the fact that he must solidify to attack or travel to the Kamui dimension (though in fairness, this would be more difficult for opponents who are not aware of how it works, and need to figure it out mid-combat)

  • Loses access to his Kamui intangibility upon absorbing the Ten-Tails

  • Taijutsu and senjutsu are still capable of harming him when he is the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki; Truth-Seeking Balls likewise cannot negate senjutsu

  • Big rocks

  2. Could the Force (something comparable to Senjutsu) resist the TSO's? And couldn't Vader just chuck them out of the battle field since they only have a range of 70M? Could Darth Vader resist genjustsu's with his helmet? And with how the verdict is presented shouldn't Vader have won? Obito has more instakill options but they are pretty close. His Kamui is short ranged, he has to touch Vader's head to remove his soul, and the truth seeker orbs have a limited range, while Vader and other Dark Side users can force choked from huge distances that can be planets apart.
