Character Analysis: Olimar

I made this as part of my Patreon! Please follow to vote on more blogs to do in the future. Zero vs Meta Knight is currently the next blog planned.

Background

An alien from the planet Hotocrate. In the original Pikmin game he crash lands on the Pikmin Planet, AKA PNF-404, and needs to recover his ship’s dispersed parts. Unable to breathe the planet's oxygen based atmosphere, he needs to do this in 30 days. He ends up recruiting help from local “Pikmin” species to gather parts of his ship and ultimately he escapes.

In the second game Olimar returns to PNF-404 to gather treasure to keep his company Hotocrate Freights from going into bankruptcy.

In Pikmin 3 Olimar is rescued from a creature called the Plasma Wraith by the Koppai pilots Alph, Charlie and Britteny. He then later goes on a journey to recover a stranded Hotocrate ship and gather treasure for Hotocrate freights again.

Pikmin 4 is a “what if” Scenario where Olimar did not escape the Pikmin planet during his original crash landing in the first game. He’s eventually rescued by the Rescue Corps.

Arsenal

Space Suit

Olimar’s space suit. In the original game it has a life support function that can last for 30 days, though in later games it is now implied to be able to keep him alive for several months. It also insulates Olimar from water environments. The suit can be upgraded by using Sparkium or various treasures found in each respective game.

Rocket punch

An upgrade that allows Olimar to perform a powerful punching combo. A similar upgrade called Triple Threat exists in Pikmin 4.

Treasure Gauge

A radar that can search for valuable treasures or ship parts.

Nap Sack

A quick sleeping function.

Anti-Electrifier

An upgrade that insulates Olimar from electrocution. It shows up again in Pikmin 4.

Scorch Guard

An upgrade that protects Olima from high heat. It shows up again in Pikmin 4.

Metal Suit Z

Greatly increases physical defense. A similar upgrade called Tuff Stuff++ and Air Armor exists in Pikmin 4.

Headlamp+

Increases the light created by the suit in dark areas.

Rush Boots

Boots that increase running speed and prevent the user from being pushed by strong winds. They show up again in Pikmin 4. Other upgrades in Pikmin 4 like the Brace boots, and Gunk Busters also help prevent restricted movement on difficult terrain.

Thermal Device

Only in Pikmin 4. Prevents freezing.

Whistle

A whistle built into Olimar’s suit. It can be used to give commands to Pikmin. The whistle can also be used to negate various elemental afflictions Pikmin may become aligned with, such as being set on fire, electrocuted, and poisoned.

Mega Tweeter

An upgrade that can extend the range of Olimar’s whistling ability. Pikmin 4 also has a similar upgrade call the Power Whistle

Plucka Phone

An upgrade that allows Olimar to pluck Pikmin from the ground with the soundwaves of his whistle. Pikmin 4 has a similar upgrade called the Plucking Whistle.

Jetpack

A jetpack that can be used to fly and hover for short periods of time.

Scrummy bone/Emergency kit

Restores packs that can restore HP to Olimar or his allies.

Weapons

Attack items

Bomb rocks: Rocks that explode. They can be thrown as weapons by both Pikmin and Olimar.

Ice Blast: A bomb that flash freezes enemies or bodies of water.

Lightning Shock: Creates a rain of lighting blasts that paralyze opponents.

Trackonator:  A bomb that can track and chase after opponents

Mine: A explosive mine

Ink: Blinds opponents in a cloud of ink.

Boulders:Summons a torrent of boulders to fall on an opponent

Warp: A item that warps an opponent to a random location.

Ultra spicy spray

A spray that increases the speed and attack power of Pikmin for a limited amount of time.

Bitter spray

A spray that immobilizes and transformers an enemy into brittle stone for a short period of time.

Pikmin

Pikmin Physiology

A species of plant based lifeforms. They follow Olimar’s instructions in each game, carry ship parts/treasure, are capable of decision making and can perform various forms of construction. They come in various different colors with specific abilities.

Flower Pikmin

Flower Pikmin are Pikmin that have reached maturity. They’re faster and more agile than average. These flowers can also be used to glide.

Onions

Onions are essentially “nests” or bases that Pikmin can stay within. By killing enemies and bringing them to an Onion to absorb, that onion can create more Pikmin of a given type. They can also fly, allowing them to go into low orbit at night.

Onion types

Onions come in various colors corresponding to the different types of Pikmin. In the earlier games each Pikmin type stayed within their own colored onions, but in later games multiple Onions were able to merge together into a “master onion”.

Pikmin limits

The Onion is partially sentient and determines how many Pikmin are allowed to be on the field. Typically “in game” this is 100 at max. In Pikmin 4 this was initially limited to 20 before gathering a substance known as Farlic. The Onions also put a limit of 3 Pikmin types being used at once in Pikmin 4. It should be noted that the Onions “limits” have been broken on multiple occasions and are likely self imposed.

Leafling transformation

A transformation an Onion can impose on any sentient being. If a sentient creature is in a near death state, the Onion can fuse that being with Pikmin DNA, allowing them to survive on the Pikmin planet without a life support system. This results in memory loss however.

Red Pikmin

Red Pikmin. They have higher attack power than most varieties of Pikmin and are immune to heat or fire damage.

Blue Pikmin

Blue Pikmin. They are immune to water hazards and can swim freely in liquid.

Yellow Pikmin

Yellow Pikmin. They’re immune to electricity and can even form circuits using their bodies as conduits. They’re also lighter than other Pikmin, can be thrown farther and can dig faster.

Purple Pikmin

Purple Pikmin. They are 10x heavier and stronger than normal Pikmin. They also produce a paralyzing ground pound when thrown. They can also anchor intangible beings like the Waterwraith into being tangible on contact.

White Pikmin

White Pikmin. They’re immune to poison and can spit corrosive acid. They can also see buried items or treasure.

Winged Pikmin

Pink Pikmin with wings. Winged Pikmin can fly, allowing them to better carry objects, clear paths, or even transport allies. They have low attack power compared to other Pikmin types.

Ice Pikmin

Ice Pikmin. They can freeze foes solid on contact, are immune to low temperatures and can freeze large bodies of water.

Rock Pikmin

Rock like Pikmin. They can be thrown like damaging projectiles and break crystal-like structures. They’re also resistant to being crushed.

Glow Pikmin

A specialized undead Pikmin that’s only active at night. They're immune to all elemental hazards, can fly and can form together to stun foes with a blast of energy. Olimar can use them when underground by using “glow seeds” to summon them.

Moss

A dog-like creature Olimar met while stranded on the Pikmin planet in Pikmin 4. It can carry him and his Pikmin, as well as act as a second commanding captain. Its abilities are similar, if not superior to the rescue corps dog Oochi.

Dog abilities

Super buff: Gives a dog the strength of 100 Pikmin

Swallow: Allows a dog to swallow large objects much bigger than themselves

Big Chomp: Increases bite strength

Ships

Dolphin

The ship Olimar used and repaired in the original game. It’s capable of MFTL flight and can instantly repair damage to Olimar’s suit. In the original game it contains numerous ship parts with special functions or abilities.

Some notable ship parts:

Hotocrate ship

The ship used by Olimar in Pikmin 2. It has two seats, an AI that can survey the environment and can store various forms of data. Its head can also detach to enter caves.

Dolphin 2

A second ship built to succeed the original Dolphin. It also has an AI helper, can detach its head, and can even create portals to transport items.
