Character Analysis: Panty and Stocking

 Background

Two angels who were booted from heaven and forced to protect the city of Danten in the United States as punishment.  They primarily hunt ghosts, demonic beings formed from negative human emotion, and can only return to heaven after collecting a specified number of “heaven coins” dropped by said Ghosts. As part of their mission they’ve even gone under cover at the local high school, where they’ve met a paranormal expert named Brief, who helps them on their quest. They’re also looked after by a priest named Garterbelt.

• Ep 1 0:43 The show takes place in Danten city. It’s explained that ghosts attack this city, but are protected by Panty/Stocking.

• Ep 1 2:45 Panty and Stocking are told about a ghost they need to hunt.

• Ep 1 4:46 Spirits/ghosts are created from the negative energy of human emotions.

• Ep 1 3:10 Panty and Stocking can’t return to heaven until they earn enough heaven coins from killing ghosts to buy their way back in.

• Ep 2 2:30 Panty and Stocking go undercover at a school and meet Brief.

Unfortunately they both kind of suck at their jobs. Not only do they both constantly bicker, but Panty is generally more interested in dating/sex, while Stocking is more interested in eating human sweets.

• Ep 3 2:50 Stocking and Panty argue.

• Ep 7 1:12 Panty and Stocking argue with each other. 

Their ultimate villains end up being the demon sisters Scanty and Kneesocks, and their master Corset. These three villains typically conspire to increase the ghost population so they can take over the human world, though for most part the sisters always stop their ambitions. Towards the end of the series Stocking is allowed back into heaven, leaving Panty behind to fend for herself however.

• Ep 6 14:35 The girls fight Scanty and Kneesocks.

• Ep 6 19:58 The girls destro a stone the demon sisters were using to make Ghosts.

• Ep 12 11:50 Stocking is allowed back into heaven, while Panty is rejected.

Ultimately Stocking returns to save Danten, and the sisters team up to prevent Corset from summoning a huge demon to ravage heaven and earth. After his defeat the girls decide to stay on earth rather than return to heaven.

• Ep 13 22:15 The girls decide to stay on earth. 

For some reason the series ends with Stocking killing Panty, claiming she was also a demon and running off without explanation. It’s kind of a huge troll.

Abilities

Angel biology

Panty and Stocking are both angels and can take on the powers associated with that race whenever they choose. Angels have increased durability, strength and agility compared to normal people. They can also fly with the aid of wings on their back and infuse melee attacks with heavenly energy that’s potent against demonic foes. They’re also seemingly long lived (With Panty/Stocking being over 500) and are resistant to most common earthly diseases. They can even revert transmutation to some extent, having been able to reverse being mechanized in the past.

• Ep 13 11:26 Stocking and Panty fly while fighting the demon sisters.

• Ep 7 9:54 Panty and Stocking are able to undo a mechanical “transformation” with their angel transformation.

Note: They aren't totally immune to all bodily affiliations however. In particular diseases, spells or afflictions of a more spiritual or demonic nature still affect them.

Arsenal

Angelic weapons

Angelic weapons formed from the undwhere of Panty and Stocking. They’re much stronger and more durable than man made weapons, but explicitly can not harm normal humans(and will simply bounce off them if an angel attempts). They are primarily used against demonic foes, though they can also work on spirits, and Angels. These weapons are powered by the heavenly energy inherent to the angel using them, and will become inactive if said energy is disabled.

• Ep 1 5:09 Panty threatens a normal person with her angelic gun. It’s shown that shooting him does no damage. 

• Ep 2 18:55 Panty mentions she needs an actual gun to hurt a normal human.

• Ep 4 20:51 It’s again shown that angels' weapons don’t work on humans.

• Ep 8 2:50 The girl's weapons also don’t have an effect on undead zombies.

• Ep 13 23:40 Stocking states heaven weapons don’t work on people. 

• Ep 4 12:22 Panty and Stocking have extra undergarments that can be used to make weapons.

• Ep 12 18:05 Panty’s angel weapons fail due to her lossing her divinity.

Blacklace

Panty’s main weapon. A pistol formed from Panties….er panties. It shoots angelic bullets at foes and is durable enough to be used as a melee weapon in close combat. Panty can form a second Blacklace gun from a second pair of panties to duel wield them in combat. She can also combine two of them to create a large automatic machine gun or a sniper rifle.

Stocking’s main weapons. They’re Katana blades formed from Stocking’s …..Stockings. They can be used as melee weapons, create sword beams, be spun around like buzz saws and thrown like boomerangs. Stocking can also combine the two of them together to form a large double sided naginata like weapon.

• Ep 1 10:43 Stocking creates numerous sword beams from her blades.

• Ep 2 8:40 Stocking duel wields two swords.

• Ep 2 10:10 Stocking spins her swords like a helicopter blade.

Panty and Stocking can also form several other misc weapons should they use the garments of a normal human, demon or angel. These include angelic shotguns, gatling guns and broadswords.

Ultimate weapon

A giant laser cannon formed from various panties and stockings. The girls initially buy the supplies needed to summon this weapon with a black credit card stolen from Garterbelt. It can also be used to summon a giant angel from heaven that can squash opponents with her feet.

• Ep 13 18:50 Panty and Stocking order tons of weapons from heaven that form a giant laser that opens a portal to heaven. A giant woman falls from it and kills Corset with a stomp.

Normal human weapons

The girls can use normal human weapons if needed. Including handguns, batons, bats and various other military weaponry.

• Ep 1 17:54 Panty can use normal guns or weapons. Including pistols, shotguns, grenade launchers and automatic machine guns.

A large convertible car Panty and Stocking can use to get around. It’s fast enough to drive up 90 degree walls and can be called to them with a whistle.

A motorcycle that Panty will often use as a form of transportation. It has no special abilities over a normal human motorcycle.

Chuck

A small dog like creature Panty and Stocking keep as a pet. It can transform into a large demon-like dog that can attack opponents. It can also regenerate from bodily damage and fire a giant laser from its mouth.
