Character Analysis: Boba Fett (Feat Grand)

After the Battle of Naboo in the year 32 BBY, Jedi Master and Council Member Sifo-Dyas foresaw that a great conflict would come to pass, and that the Galactic Republic would need to raise an army of immense numbers and power to overcome this threat. However, when he brought this forth to his peers, they rejected his plan and removed him from the council. Still, unable to ignore what he had seen of the future, he went forth with his plans in secret. Sifo-Dyas contacted the Kaminoans, an alien race of super scientists who had unlocked the secrets to artificially cloning a living being. He contracted them to build an army of clones that would make up the Grand Army of the Republic, but shortly after this he was killed in battle.

His plans were not dead however, and unfortunately for Sifo-Dyas, they had fallen into the wrong hands. Count Dooku A.K.A Darth Tyrannus had learned of his plans and followed through with them, viewing it as an opportunity to destroy the Jedi from the inside. Wishing for the clones to be based off as perfect a specimen as he could get, Dooku contacted the Mandalorian foundling and famous bounty hunter Jango Fett to serve as the genetic donor for this project. Jango agreed to his terms, but on one condition outside of payment: one unaltered clone, no genetic modifiers, no growth acceleration, that would become Jango’s own son. Codenamed “Alpha”, this was Boba Fett.

In his early years, Boba travelled the galaxy with his father, helping him out with his bounty hunts and learning on the job so that he would be able to make it on his own when he got older too. But unfortunately for Boba, he ended up having to make it on his own a lot sooner. When the Jedi caught wind of the secret Clone Army on Kamino in 22 BBY, they sent master Obi-Wan Kenobi to investigate. There he met and engaged with Jango and Boba, before following them to Geonosis. While Kenobi, along with his Padawan Anakin Skywalker and Senator Padme Amidala, were captured by Count Dooku and his Separatist forces, the Jedi arrived to rescue them in what would be known as the Battle of Geonosis. Jango himself joined the fight and battled several Jedi, but ultimately fell to Mace Windu after being brutally decapitated by him in the heat of battle - all while young Boba Fett watched. When the battle finally concluded, the young boy retrieved his father’s helmet, and cried over his death.

In the following years, Boba Fett became one of the most revered bounty hunters in the galaxy, leading the likes of Bossk, Aurra and Asajj Ventress on several missions as a team, before switching over to more solo work as he grew older. He would eventually don his father’s own Mandalorian armour and all the neat gadgets that came with the gear (even giving it a nifty green paint job), and through all his accomplishments became one of Jabba the Hutt’s top bounty hunters, which is certainly saying something when you’re talking about the most notorious of the most notorious crime syndicate family in the entire galaxy. Fett even found himself taking jobs from the likes of the Sith Lord Darth Vader himself, tracking down rebels such as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, but don’t be fooled by his sponsors. This old clone doesn’t take any sides other than his own, and he doesn’t not hunt for good, for evil, for innocents, or even for criminals. The only thing that Boba Fett hunts for are bounties.

Experience

Currently in the Disney canon timeline, Fett’s most recent appearance has placed him at about 41 years old, with a bounty hunting career lasting several decades. From an early age, Boba was trained by Jango to be a bounty hunter. Initially starting off with practice back on their home of Kamino, but once Boba was old enough, he began to accompany his father on bounty hunter missions. In some scenarios, even if his son were to be seriously harmed, Jango would not interfere as a means of teaching him the important lessons of being a bounty hunter.

After Jango was killed, Boba continued his bounty hunting business, teaming up with the likes of Bossk, Aurra Sing and Asajj Ventress for a number of jobs, and often being placed in a leader-role for his cunning and skill despite the significant age difference from his peers. As he grew older, he would do this less and carve a reputation all his own by taking more solo jobs. The few odd ones here and there, and most notably tracking down rebels or other targets for the likes of Jabba the Hutt or the Empire, even taking some from Darth Vader himself. With all his success, Boba Fett has been hailed as the best bounty hunter in the galaxy, and it’s not hard to see why.

Equipment

Mandalorian Armor

The Mandalorian Armour that Fett uses was originally Jango’s, though Boba took ownership of it after his father passed, even having to take his own dad’s decapitated head out of the helmet. While he didn’t wear it in his early years, once he grew of age (and size), you could hardly find Boba Fett without it on.

Originally said to be made of Duraplast and Durasteel, it was retconned in The Mandalorian that his armor is made of beskar, an incredibly strong metal that is capable of either withstanding lightsabers. His helmet is equipped with the H.U.D helmet display which provides him with targeting, infrared vision and even the ability to locate a target’s organs. The armor and the cloth Fett wears beneath also provide him with heat and cold, even being able to take a blast from Fett’s own flamethrower. It also has an acid resistance though it should be noted that it is explicitly not immune, and can eventually be worn down by them. Finally, his suit is vacuum-sealed, allowing him to survive in space.

ZX Miniature Flame Projector

A flamethrower mounted on Fett’s wrist that can spew powerful flames up to five meters away. It has enough fuel to last for several minutes.

Fibercord Whip Thrower

A wrist-mounted weapon that fired a long wire that could wrap around a foe and leave them ensnared, limiting their mobility and allowing them to be dragged around. They also come with a grappling hook attachment for what else but grappling, as well as smacking into targets as a blunt weapon. By hitting a button on the user’s gauntlet, the whip could be released, and you’d almost think it has a mind of its own with some of the crazy movement it pulls off. As you might expect from a simple wire though, it can be broken pretty easily.

Mini-Concussion Rocket Launcher

A small rocket-launcher kept in Fett’s gauntlets. Despite their small size, they pack an insane punch that was able to reduce this giant robot to scrap metal.

Dur-24 Wrist Laser

Yep, Fett doesn’t just keep the laser action to his guns. He also has a laser mounted on his wrist which can knock foes back with ease.

Wristband Blades

Jagged blades mounted in the wrists of Fett’s armour which can be ejected at a given moment. It can be used to slice at an enemy for attacking or dig into a surface to slow and stop one's fall

Kneecap Missiles

Now we’re just getting a bit absurd, right? But yes, Fett does indeed have tiny missiles inside his kneecap guards which are able to knockout Stormtroopers.

Spike-Tipped Boots

Fett’s boots have tiny spikes at their tips to add some extra piercing damage when kicking an opponent.

Control Pad

A control pad on Fett’s wrist that allows him to control his equipment, such his homing missile, all the other stuff on his wrists, his jetpack and the Slave I.

Z-6 Jetpack

A jetpack created and used by the Mandalorians which allows for swift and nimble flight that lets Fett fly through tight areas, capable of even keeping up with starships flying at cruising altitude or speedsters. It can also be made to self-destruct, which makes for a deadly combo if he straps someone else to it. It does have a major flaw however in that external damage, even if relatively can minor, can cause the jetpack to go haywire and ignite without the user’s control, which can lead to injury or, in Boba Fett’s own case, his near-demise when he fell into the Sarlacc Pit. And despite being attached to the Mandalorian armour, it can be ripped off of Fett’s back with enough force.

Anti-Vehicle Homing Missile

The Z-6 Jetpack also comes equipped with a missile that can home in on targets and blow them up. It typically requires that Fett aims with his H.U.D helmet display first in order to make sure it keeps track of its target, but once it does, it can certainly leave quite the mark. And despite the name, it’s also pretty good at killing people too. The missile can be activated either with a button on Fett’s wrist or a voice command.

EE-3 Carbine Rifle

A blaster carbine model and Fett’s primary weapon capable of three-round burst fire and excelling in long-range, but still packing a huge wallop up-close. The only flaw with this gun is that due to its larger size, it makes mobility more difficult, but this can be compensated for with Fett’s jetpack so it’s not a big deal.

Blaster Pistol

Fett also carries some smaller blaster pistols, but they’re nothing to scoff at considering they have enough power behind them to vaporize this guy. While it’s a little unclear what exact model he is using in his adult years, it can be assumed that he still carries his father’s WESTAR-34 dual pistols as he was seen using them throughout his appearances in The Clone Wars.

Cycler Rifle

Sniper rifles used by the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine that were designed to shoot solid projectiles from a long-range that were strong enough to take out a podracer, but had a slow firing rate. Fett carried one with him while searching for his armour in The Mandalorian.

Gaderffii Stick

Another weapon used by the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine, the Gaderffii Stick is a melee weapon with a spike at each end for stabbing and piercing. Fett also used this while in search of his armour, and was clearly very well adept at using it, considering how badly he crushed a squad of Stormtroopers by himself with it, even piercing and smashing several of their own armour pieces.

Motion Sensor Bomb

As the name suggests, a bomb that was activated by detecting the motion of something trippy its laser alert. While miniscule in size, this bomb let off an explosion that killed a Clone Trooper in full armour. Since Boba attempted to kill Mace Windu with this, it can be assumed it had the power to kill a fully-grown Jedi Master, though its use naturally lends it to being better for stealthy assassinations.

Flash Grenade

The classic flashbang grenades are a staple of bounty hunter-types all across fiction, and Boba Fett is no exception. Not only can their explosions of light leave a room battered, but they also temporarily blind those who were unfortunate enough to come across them.

Stun Agent Darts

Small darts that Fett fires from his wrists which can temporarily incapicitate any being that’s been struck by them. They obviously can’t work on anything with skin that can’t be pierced however, so any type of armour immediately stops them.

Sonic Bomb

The flash grenade but for a different sense, the Sonic Boom lets off a high-pitched sound that can completely immobilize anyone nearby, be they Jedi or Proxy. Fett isn’t affected by them however.

Gas Bomb

A bomb that releases a gas that can knock out creatures that inhale it. It’s typically used for larger groups of enemies.

Handcuffs

Fett also carries around some handcuffs to do... exactly what you would expect of handcuffs.

Concentrated Deeb Spray

Concentrated Deeb Spray is a chemical that Fett carries around in a canister. A bit of a spritz from this stuff was able to knock Connor Freeman right out.

Binoculars

Some sci-fi binoculars that allow Fett to see a great distance away. Like normal binoculars, their sight can be zoomed in and out.

Recording Device

A mini recording device for... recording people. Man these are starting to get pretty self-explanatory aren’t they? But thanks to the devices’ small size, it can be easily tacked onto someone without them realizing it.

Tracking Beacon

Fett carries a tracking beacon which can be used to find people throughout the galaxy. And I do mean the galaxy, those things have an insane level of reception.

Bioenergy Disruptor

While its exact nature isn’t really explored, the bioenergy disruptor appears to shock its targets and leave them extremely weakened. It is fired from Fett’s gauntlets like his usual Fibercord Whip.

Thermal Detonator

The strongest bombs in Fett’s arsenal outside of the Slave I, these things may not look like much, but they are incredibly powerful, with a single bomb being capable of destroying a small building. They can be set to explode in a given amount of time, and can only be deactivated by the person who initially activated them.

Lightsaber

The oh-so iconic weapon of the Jedi and Sith, Boba Fett is one of the few known non-Force users in the Star Wars galaxy to have wielded a lightsaber, a plasma blade that typically extends around three feet in length. The lightsaber does not expend any heat until it comes into contact with something, and when it does, its intense heat can cut through practically anything, even the Duranium armour of General Grievous which is tough enough to survive a planet surface bombing. There are certain materials that it cannot cut through however, such as the beskar that Mandalorians use.

Fett has a collection of lightsabers that he took from Jedi that he’s killed, and while we haven’t seen him use it very much, he was shown to have enough skills to fight Darth Vader. It can be assumed that he doesn’t have much in the way of formal training with it however, as he does not use any of the standard Lightsaber combat forms, preferring to stick with his bread-and-butter bounty hunter gear.

Abilities

Expert Marksman

Boba Fett has a crazy level of accuracy with his guns. As per his father’s advice, Fett consistently trains his shooting skills to keep them from dulling, as when it comes to bounty hunting it’s best to make sure the kills are as clean as possible. He's able to hit targets from an incredible distance and take down opponents in a single shot by hitting them between the eyes. Fett also constantly keeps on his toes when entering potentially dangerous areas and is ready for a quickdraw at any moment, juuust in case anyone is dumb enough to try taking him out.

Hand-to-Hand Combat

Even as a teenager, Fett has shown some aptitude in hand-to-hand combat, capable of fighting Krismo Sodi with only his bare fists (TCW Bounty). Given Jango used some hand-to-hand against Obi-Wan, he likely trained his son in it to some extent. Regardless, he still much prefers to stick with his bounty hunting gear.

Olfactory Sensor

It’s just called having a good nose, Boba. Either way, Fett says that he has an “olfactory sensor” that’s capable of picking up “one in a billion particles”, which is how he claims he knew the location of the Kaptain as well as his involvement. While the “one in a billion particles” is likely an exaggeration, it still allows him to detect a person via their scent.

Vehicles

Slave I

Originally owned by Jango before being passed on to his son, the Slave I is a modified Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft originating from the planet Kuat. While it doesn’t appear to have much in the way of weapons beyond its blaster cannons, this is merely to make the ship seem less threatening than it actually is, with much of its firing equipment kept hidden away. It has an on-board computer to help Boba with piloting and can be controlled by the pad on Boba’s wrist or even voice-commands over radio communications so that he doesn’t even necessarily need to be in the ship to use it. He can also plug droids and other data equipment into its computer to get some information from them. The “wings” at the side of the ship are actually its stabilizers which help it maintain balance in the air. Should they be destroyed, Fett is pretty well-guaranteed for a crash landing.

Cannon Blasters

The Slave I’s primary weapon are its cannon blasters, located at the center and bottom of the ship when it’s in flight mode. The cannons are incredibly powerful and have a very fast firing rate, capable of breaking giant asteroids during Jango’s dogfight with Obi-Wan in space

Seismic Charges

Bombs that can be dropped out of the Slave I’s back to release an extremely powerful shockwave blast when activated. These shockwaves are strong enough to completely decimate several large asteroids and obliterate TIE Fighters. By their nature of being deployed from the ship’s back, they are generally used as a means of getting rid of enemy ships that are hot on the Slave I’s tail, either by destroying them or forcing them to divert their path.

Homing Torpedoes

Lined in the bottom of the Slave I, the homing torpedoes are another self-explanatory weapon that follow after whatever target they’ve been set to. They are fast and nimble enough to keep up with Obi-Wan’s starfighter, keeping up with it even as they weave through an asteroid field. Its resulting explosion is enough to destroy a ship, though they can be avoided by forcing something to hit it first, like Obi-Wan ejecting his unnecessary canisters.

Ion Cannon

A cannon that releases an electric blast that can shut down an enemy’s avionics and comms. While it won’t do anything to actually damage the ship, it will leave them essentially stranded and unable to call for aid, making it super useful for captures (The Rescue).

Shields

The Slave I can produce a field around itself to protect itself from damage. Boba uses this to make crash landings much easier to survive, but also for the complete opposite use of turning the Slave I into a ram that can crash into ships without sustaining major damage.

Hyperdrive

Finally, the Slave I is equipped with a Hyperdrive that allows it to travel through Hyperspace, an extradimensional space that allows ships to cross great distances in the galaxy in much less time than would realistically be required. It is required that the coordinates of its destination be placed into the Slave I before it can make the jump however, so they cannot simply zip anywhere in the galaxy within an instant, and must be aware of where they are landing. In battle, it is often used as a method of escape.

Feats

Power

(For power and durability, I’m not going to consider feats performed by Jango Fett or Cobb Vanth as “scaling” since they’re relying on the literal exact same equipment that Boba is using.)

Speed

  • The Slave I chases after R2 in Mace Windu’s starfighter (R2 Come Home)

Scaling

Durability

Scaling

  • Aurra crashes the Slave I, but she survives the explosion (Lethal Trackdown - 21:00)

  • Mando’s Beskar spear (the same material Fett’s armour is made out of) survived his ship’s destruction (The Tragedy - 24:15)

Skill

Weaknesses

Despite being the number one bounty hunter in the galaxy, Boba Fett isn’t exactly as perfect as one might initially think. The biggest of his obvious flaws being that damn jetpack of his - one good knock on that thing and he’ll be sent flying to who knows where, it is really not that hard to set it off. This is how he fell in the Sarlacc Pit in the first place, with Han Solo just accidentally hitting it. Seriously, this thing has been in use for over three decades, you’d think they’d get that checked out by this point.

Despite how tough his Mandalorian beskar armour is, the same unfortunately cannot be said for all of his weapons, which are susceptible to being broken if targeted. And even with that tough armour to his hide, it by no means makes Fett invincible. As Jango’s own death at the hands of Mace Windu shows, it does not cover every part of his body. Necessity for the sake of easier mobility and not crushing someone under its weight, but all the same leaving weak points exposed for an easy chop-off.

Fett also obviously doesn’t have an infinite supply of weapons. Blasters are one thing, but those rockets on his back don’t have an unlimited number of uses to them, and the same goes for many of his bombs and other weapons, which means he needs to make sure he’s maximizing their usefulness and not just throwing them out like they’re nothing.
