Character Analysis: Yuno Gasai

Background

Yuno Gasai was adopted at a young age by her parents and lived a happy life until the strain of money began to emotionally and psychologically affect her parents, specifically her mother. Yuno's father worked extra hours to make ends meet and her mother began to abuse her, wanting her to become the perfect citizen, which eventually led to her starving Yuno in a cage. While Yuno's father was aware of her abuse, he did nothing to change the situation.

Eventually, Yuno snapped and managed to imprison her parents inside a cage as punishment for her abuse. While this was a non-lethal retaliation for weeks/months of abuse, Yuno neglected to check in on her parents and accidentally starved them to death. Yuno fell into despair and was willing to attach herself to anything that could emotionally support her, leading to her developing an healthy obsession for Yukiteru Amano, who unintentionally gave her hope for the future after jokingly promising to marry her one day.

Yuno spent most of her time stalking Yuki, hoping to grow closer to him, which ironically happened a few weeks later when the two of them were drafted into a survival game run by the God of Space and Time, Deus ex Machina (I know...), which was created to determine a successor to his thrown before his eventual death, as a world without a God of Space and Time would cease to exist.

Despite the steep competition, Yuno and Yuki managed to outlast the competition. Through an unfortunate series of events however, Yuki died, leaving Yuno to inherit the throne by herself. Unable to live without Yuki, Yuno traveled back in time, creating a 2nd universe, killed her 2nd World counterpart, and took her place in the 2nd World's Survival Games, all just to be with the man she loved.

Weapons and Equipment

Yukiteru Diary
A magical space-time instrument Yuno uses during the 2nd World's Survival Game. A Future Diary is a prophetic device that informs the user about future events. If a diary user is on a path that will lead to their demise, the words "DEAD END" will appear on their diary. However, since the future is not set in stone, it is possible for a diary user to avoid their unfortunate fate.

Yuno's diary takes the form of a cell phone and allows her to see Yukiteru's future in bursts of 10 minutes. However, given that the diary only lets her see Yuki's future, it's pretty much useless in a one on one fight. A diary user's life force is tied to a person's Future Diary, so if Yuno's phone were to be damaged in any way, she will die...though it is possible that this weakness no longer applies to Yuno by the end of the series, as destroying her 1st World's diary did not result in her death and she is no longer bound by the rules of the Survival Game.

Axe
A normal axe Yuno uses to defend herself from Tsubaki Kasugano's mind controlled followers.

Knives
A common type of weapon that Yuno carries throughout the series. Yuno has used kitchen knives, snap off utility knives, military combat style knives, and blade-like knives.

Sledgehammer
A small one handed sledgehammer Yuno uses to try and kill Reisuke Houjou. Yuno also uses this hammer to accidentally knock out Yuki's mother.

Smith and Wesson Model 36 Revolvers
Two revolver handguns Yuno uses after stealing them from police officers. Yuno does not use the revolvers simultaneously, but instead uses them one at a time, using the second as a backup if the first revolver were to run out of bullets. Each revolver carries up to six rounds and has a muzzle velocity of 850 mph.

Crossbow
A fifty pound crossbow Yuno uses. In real life, most fifty pound crossbows can shoot accurately up to 40 feet and can fire arrows up to 136 miles per hour.

Beretta 92 Pistol
A semi-automatic pistol Yuno uses in her car chase with Eleventh. This handgun has an effective firing range of up to 160 feet, can carry up to 32 bullets, and has a muzzle velocity of 852 miles per hour.

Heckler and Koch MP5 Machine Gun
A machine gun Yuno uses in the anime to take out security guards. This type of gun can carry to up 30 rounds and has a muzzle velocity of 950 miles per hour.

Latin Machete
A machete Yuno uses in the anime to kill a group of orphans.

Katana
An ordinary katana Yuno uses to kill a group of security guards.

Flashbang Grenade
A grenade that, upon detonation, releases a flash of light to blind enemies. Technically, this grenade doesn't belong to Yuno nor was it meant for her to use. She picks it up after Yuki drops it, so this might not be used in a DEATH BATTLE scenario.

Taser
An ordinary taser used to knock out others with an electrical shock.

Abilities

Intelligence
Yuno is a clever and perceptive, most likely a result from her mother's abuse of wanting her to become the perfect citizen. She can pick up on small details easily missed by others and can think up fairly creative plans while in dangerous situations.

God Powers
After winning the First World's Survival Game, Yuno inherited the powers of Deus ex Machina. While she has never weaponized this, Yuno does have control over the Law of Cause and Effect. And while she has never display these abilities, even in situations where they would've been pretty useful, she should technically be capable of voiding the existence of others and flying, given that Deus and Minene were capable of doing this.

Speaking of which, while Yuno has shown that she create illusions with Deus' powers, this power only seems to work in conjunction with Muru Muru's spheres, as every illusion she's made in the series were limited to the inside of the sphere, and the spheres technically don't belong to her. They belong to Muru Muru, who is technically outside help. Also, while some may argue that Goddess Yuno should be capable of doing anything Muru Muru can do, there's nothing in canon that backs this up, and both characters have a separate/non-related set of abilities.

Either way though, despite being a god, Goddess Yuno does not make her omnipotent, omnipresent, or immortal, as Deus and Yuno can be tricked and unaware of certain situations and Yuno needed her diary to keep track of Yuki's movements, Goddess Yuno travelling from point A to B takes time, and Deus can die. Also, while a God's death can result in the destruction of the universe, this is only limited to the universe they govern, as 1st World's Goddess Yuno's death did not result in the destruction of the 3rd World, so this might not be useful in a DEATH BATTLE either depending on the setting.

  • Defeated Twelfth by exploiting his weakness
  • Killed the Fifth and Eleventh Diary user
  • Outsmarted Akise Aru
  • Became the God of the Third World and ruled with Yuki

Weaknesses

Besides NEVER SHUTTING UP ABOUT YUKI, Yuno is crazy and emotionally dependent on Yuki and sometimes that can affect her behavior in battle. Also, while Goddess Yuno may or may not be powerful, she seems to be somewhat of a glass cannon, as her physicality in Goddess form was relatively just the same as it was in her human form. Also, given that she's never used any of abilities displayed or mentioned by Deus or Minene, it's unlikely that she'll whip them out in a one on one.

Possible Opponents

Shion Sonozaki (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni)
Arguably Yuno's most thematic opponent, Yuno and Shion are known as the Queen of Yanderes in the anime community and go on a killing spree for their senpai. They both take the place of someone who looks just like them and both killed a kid named Hojo that was skilled in making traps.

Rena Ryuugu (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni)
Another popular rival for Yuno from the Higurashi series is Rena Ryuugu. Yuno is the Queen of Yanderes and...I guess Rena is the face of Yangire? Either way, this is probably Yuno's most fair opponent.

Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
Iconic gals who have an unhealthy obsession with a guy and would kill for him.
