Character Analysis: King Mickey(Feat Kirche)

 King Mickey Character Sheet

Glossary

Because Kingdom Hearts is a complicated mess with a lot of unique terms to it, I considered it a necessity to explain some things to better understand some of the feats and stories.

  • Lanes/Oceans Between: To put it simply, it’s the Outer Space of Kingdom Hearts. Basically, it’s a large ocean of stars that contains all of the worlds in the series. In most cases, the worlds are far away enough that spaceships such as Keyblade Gliders or Gummi Ships are needed to travel between them. In KH3, there are different “Levels”, which are portrayed as various star systems. This is important to understand some of the feats.

  • Hearts: Soul-ish like segments of people and worlds. A person whose Heart gets corrupted by darkness becomes a Heartless, and if they’re strong enough, their body becomes an empty shell with a will of its own, also known as a Nobody. Keyblades are able to separate a Heart from its body.

  • MP: Magic Points. The average mana meter in the series. It allows magic users to cast spells. In Mickey’s case, he’s not as limited as Sora when casting magic, but we do know that he can’t spam magic. It regenerates over time once it’s depleted, but it takes a while

  • Dimensional Link: A mechanic in Birth By Sleep that allows Terra, Aqua, and Ventus to use the powers of characters they meet in their journeys. Mickey can perform a D-Link with them, so the techniques that they can use with it are ones that Mickey himself should be able to use, even if we don’t see him using them on screen.

  • X-blade: (Pronounced ki-blade, yes this is dumb, I know) The Keyblade equivalent of Kingdom Hearts, which is able to unlock its true power. Vanitas wields it in BBS, and Xehanort does in KH3. Given that it’s the weapon counterpart of the KH, it’s typically considered to be equal to it in power.

Background

  • Full Name: Michael Theodore Mouse

  • Gender: Male

  • Age: Ageless

  • Species: Mouse

  • Height: 68 cm (2’3”)

  • Weight: 10 kg (23 pounds)

  • Backstory: Mickey Mouse, a cheerful underdog, whose career started off as a simple assistant to steamboat captain Peg Leg Pete, is known to be one of the seven Guardians of Light in the Kingdom Hearts universe. Before becoming the King of Disney Castle, Mickey was the apprentice to a powerful sorcerer known as Yen Sid, who taught him in the ways of magic and the use of a legendary weapon that few can wield, the Keyblade. Working under Yen Sid’s guidance and cooperating with other Keyblade wielders, Mickey’s duty is to prevent darkness from spreading to the many worlds of Disney. Eventually, his experience and skill allowed him to become a Keyblade Master and obtain his own kingdom, the Disney Castle.

In order to save the Worlds, Mickey has traveled multiple times to the Realm of Darkness, where he found the Keyblade of Darkness and sealed one of the Kingdom Hearts. With the help of the other Guardians of Light, Mickey’s next mission was to stop the Organization XIII from obtaining the power of Kingdom Hearts.

Powers, Equipment, & Techniques

Keyblades: A legendary weapon that few can wield, let alone master. It’s a highly powerful magic sword that can unlock anything, including the hearts of people and the worlds. They act as a catalyst to channel magic attacks, and they can shoot beams of light. They can generate portals. They can separate one’s Heart from their body. At his strongest, he was able to generate a gigantic beam that extended the Keyblade’s range. Keyblades are connected to the user, so if they get knocked off their hands, they can teleport back to the user’s hands.

Mickey’s current Keyblade is known as Star Cluster.

Nobodies have nonexistence and the Keyblades can harm them.

Magic Mastery: Having been taught by the sorcerer Yen Sid, Mickey has masterful control of several magic spells.

  • Burst of Faith: A light-element spell that allows Mickey to shoot light magic while spinning in circles.

  • Sign of Faith: A light-element spell that allows Mickey to release a spiral of light.

  • Faithcharge: A light-element spell that allows Mickey to charge toward the enemy while surrounded by a barrier of light and several balls of light.

  • Holy: A highly-potent light-element spell that allows Mickey to call forth a massive column of holy light.

  • Mine Shield: A spell that allows Mickey to set three explosive mines in front of him. If an enemy steps on them, they will be paralyzed.

  • Pearl: A light-element spell that allows Mickey to shoot a homing orb of light. Doesn't matter if he can see the opponent.

  • Faith Volley: Mickey shoots a barrage of explosive light spheres.

  • Mini: A spell that allows Mickey to shrink enemies to minuscule sizes, to a point where just stepping on them is enough to kill them.

  • Curaga: One of the most potent healing spells in the series. It fully heals Mickey and his allies from all previous injuries, but it uses a large amount of MP, which regenerates automatically after some time.

  • Healing Light: The most powerful healing spell in the series. It’s capable of restoring the health of those who have been knocked out, but it spends a lot of energy.

  • Stopza: An extremely powerful magic spell that allows the user to stop time in a wide area for a long time. It lasted through the entirety of Riku’s battle with Young Xehanort.

  • Ultima: Supposedly, the most powerful spell in Mickey’s arsenal. It’s not very clear what the spell involves, but it seems to be another light-based spell where Mickey charges forward surrounded by light.

Sliding Dash: Self-explanatory. Mickey dashes forward while striking with the Keyblade.

Binding Strike: Mickey performs a strike with the Keyblade that paralyzes the enemy.

Power Bestowal: Mickey has bestowed part of his power to others on various occasions. In KH2, his power allowed Sora to unlock a new Drive form. In KH3, he granted Sora the power to connect hundreds of distant worlds and light them up as constellations.

Power of Waking: An ability exclusive to Keyblade Masters. It allows the user to awaken a sleeping heart. In other words, it lets them unseal people whose soul has been sealed away. Very situational, so not even worth mentioning.

Astral Projection: Mickey can separate his spirit from his body. He has used this to remotely interact with Riku while the latter was stuck inside of Castle Oblivion. In this form, he’s completely intangible.

Black Cloak: The average getup of those who dwell in darkness. The cloak protects the wearer from the influence of darkness, and it makes their own inner darkness harder to detect.

Scaling

  • Aqua, Terra, and Ventus: The three protagonists of Birth By Sleep. They often cooperate with Mickey, and they occasionally fight alongside him against the same foes, such as Vanitas.

  • Kingdom Hearts (entity): The titular entity of the series. It is a compound of the hearts of all people and the worlds. Many people have attempted to replicate its power or access it. Ansem tried to open it with a man-made Keyblade, but failed. Xemnas has been able to absorb his own replica of it, although it was damaged. In BBS, Xehanort forges the X-blade, which acts as the Keyblade counterpart of KH, but that X-blade is short-lived, as it was destroyed when Ventus defeated Vanitas inside his heart. In KH3, Xehanort successfully reforges the X-blade and gets full control of Kingdom Hearts, intending to use it to recreate the universe.

Why does this scale to Mickey? In BBS, Mickey matches the awakened x-blade while it’s being wielded by Vanitas. In KH3: ReMind, Mickey and the other Guardians of Light fight against 12 Xehanort replicas while inside Xehanort’s Kingdom Hearts, so it’s fair to say that they were tapping into its power. At a later point, a heavily injured Mickey fends off all 12 copies by himself.

  • The KH in KH1, which is smaller and less powerful than the real one was able to restore many worlds that had sunk into the darkness, which are represented as stars.

  • The KH in KH3 is the real, fully-powered one, and Xehanort intended to use it to reset the universe.

  • Donald & Goofy: King Mickey’s vassals, and Sora’s main travel companions. Given that they’re the King’s subordinates, it goes without saying that they’re inferior to Mickey in power.

    • In the final battle of KH3 against Xehanort with the x-blade and the true Kingdom Hearts, Sora, Donald, and Goofy match the KH’s attacks with their combined efforts. Even if we assume that only ⅓ of the energy would apply to each one, this would scale to Mickey, given that none of the three characters received any special boosts or weapons to match Xehanort.

  • Sora: The main character of the series. He’s consistently portrayed as comparable to the King, although it’s possible that Mickey is stronger than him, given that in KH2, Mickey would sometimes swoop in when Sora got defeated by a boss and rescued him, being able to deal just as much damage as Sora.

  • Roxas: Sora’s Nobody. He’s essentially equal to Sora, and they fight pretty much the same kinds of foes.

  • True Organization XIII (and their Data Versions):  The main antagonists of the series, a group of Nobodies whose bodies were filled by 13 copies of Xehanort’s heart from throughout space-time. During KH3, Mickey and Sora team up to defeat Marluxia, Larxene, and Luxord.

    • The Data versions of the Organization are a set of Superbosses in KH3: ReMind. They consist of Data replicas of all members of the Organization, they’re incredibly powerful even for a Max Level post-game Sora with optimized weapons and equipment. Power-wise, they are all equal to one another in power and must be defeated by skill alone. Given that they’re data, it’s obvious that they’re identical in power to the real-world versions of the characters.

Weaknesses

  • MP is a limited resource even in cutscenes, so high-level spells can deplete it with ease, such as Stopza.

  • Healing Light takes a long time to charge.

  • Some of his abilities aren’t very practical for combat.

  • He needs his Keyblade to use spells.

Others

Say, fellas, did somebody mention the Door to Darkness?

  1. The worlds in Kingdom Hearts definitely aren't smaller than planets to the point of city or country sized worlds... that's a massive lowball. When a world is destroyed it's treated like as if an entire star has gone out as seen from Traverse Town which is a world between worlds (not saying the worlds are as small as stars) and the worlds like Stitch's world have a character who oversees the universe but never interacted with anything outside of the world (as shown with how they didn't know what Terra was). You can't judge the size of the world by how much you can travel in game. Games usually aren't able to accurately scale to the lore they are trying to follow.

Characters like Zeus from Hercules can easily move around hundreds of stars but something like this doesn't affect anything outside their world.

They even have characters transcending time which is infinitely greater than star level or below.
