Character Analysis:Gray Filibuster



Background


Long story short. Gray lived in a village until everyone he knew was murdered by a demon named deloriah. He was taken in by an ice mage named Ur when she came to investigate and was taught how to fight with ice magic. Eventually, Gray tried to seek revenge on deloriah, but got in over his head, forcing Ur to sacrifice her life to save him. After Ur’s death, he sought to find a way to reverse the spell Ur casted to stop deloriah(iced shell) and to gain further tutelage. This lead to him joining a guild in Fiore called Fairy tail. Most of his conflicts in the series revolve around him trying to protect the guild or confronting his past mistakes that got Ur killed.

Abilities

Magic

Magic is a supernatural phenomenon that can be utilized by around 10% of the fairy tale worlds population to power various attacks, supportive and defensive abilities. It is utilized by using a substance known as ethernano, which resides inside living things and the world around them. A mages body has a limited supply of ethernano that it can absorb and utilize at one time. This ethernano limit can be increased via unlocking a “second origin”, a secondary magic container in a magicians body. When a character runs out of ethernano to power their magical abilities, it will naturally restore in their bodies over time.

Ice magic
A category of magic based around temperature control, ice creation and freezing objects. It’s the basis for most Gray’s abilities, and can be used on its own to freeze bodies of water, objects, or people solid.

Ice shell
An advanced Ice based skill that sacrifices the user's life and transforms them into a form of living ice that encases the victim. This ice is almost entirely unmeltable and will generally stay intact while eroding away the life of the victim for years or decades before dissipating. It can be reversed with a spell known as the moon drip.
Lost ice shell
An enhanced version of ice shell gray developed after learning about “lost” magic. It works similarly to the normal ice shell attack but has far increased power and longevity. The downside is that in addition to killing the caster(sorta), it also erases all memories of them from reality.

Ice maker magic

A sub-branch of ice magic that Grey specializes in. “Maker magic” is essentially a form of magic where a person uses their chosen element to create objects or weapons. For Gray it’s essentially the equivalent of becoming an alchemist from full metal, but specializing in ice creations specifically. Grey himself typically creates “static” ice creations, which means that they are a non-moving inanimate construct.

Ice lance
Creates a barrage of ice lancers that fly forward and impale opponents.


Ice freeze lance
An enhanced version of ice lance, where the lances can curve trajectory after being shot.

Ice wall
A wall of ice that can block projectile or physical attacks.

Ice shield
An ice construct that creates a giant ice based shield. Can be used to block massive physical or projectile based attacks.


Hammer
Creates a small building sized hammer that crashes down on an opponent.

Ice hammer
A hammer variant where Gray will grab onto one side of the hammer and smash it down onto an opponent.

Ice impact

A larger ice hammer(that’s almost drill shaped) that drops onto an opponent from above.

Floor
Creates a layer of ice on the ground that can be used to trip up opponents.

Arrow
Creates a giant ice arrow that shoots a barrage of ice shards at an opponent.

Super freeze arrow
A boost in the air with an ice construct followed by a powerful ice arrow.

Battle axe
Creates a powerful ice axe like swipe to slice into opponents.

Ice sword
An ice sword construct that can be used for close-range melee attacks.

Excalibur
A large ice knight sword used for close-range melee attacks.

Demon slayers magic

A special kind of magic the can exorcise or kill Demons, and demonic power. Tapping into its power tends to create black markings on Grey’s skin. Demon slayer magic gives Grey some immunity to magical curses, but prolonged use can affect his mental stability. Grey can use it in combination with his ice magic to enhance the power of his ice constructs, ice resistance and ingest all forms of ice(besides his own) to power himself up similar to how Natsu can ingest fire. Grey was gifted this form of magic from his father after beating him in a fight.

  • His cold resistance via demon slayer has had limits in the past.
